“There’s no longer evidence for a need of God, even less of Christ. The so-called traditional churches look like they are dying.”

It matters who said this. If it came from Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens – the Four Horsemen of the New Apocalypse – few would accept it as an objective assessment. But the author of this quote was Pope Benedict XVI.[1]
The Pope’s candor fits well with other research sponsored by churches. When you count the people in the pews on Sunday rather than having a pollster ask whether or not they attend church, fewer than 18% attend church regularly.[2] From 1980 to 2005 in the Southern Baptist Church, baptisms of people between eighteen and thirty four – in other words, their next generation of leaders – fell 40 percent, from 100,000 in 1980 to 60,000 in 2005.[3]
But the U.S. population grew by 27% during those 25 years, so the Baptists would have had to baptize 127,000 in 2005 just to stay even; they really fell by 52%.[4] In 2006, the Southern Baptists – who claim almost six times more members than any other white evangelical church – made a concerted effort to baptize one million people. Not only did they fall over two-thirds short, they actually baptized even fewer than they had the year before.[5]
You might think that some faith group must have grown during the last thirty years, and you’d be right: atheists and nonbelievers more than doubled in the eleven years between 1990 and 2001, from 14 million to 29 million: from 8% of the country to 14%. There are more than twice as many atheists and nonbelievers as there are evangelical Christians.[6] And since it’s hard to believe that all atheists/nonbelievers would be willing to confess that to pollsters, the number is probably much higher. From 2000 to 2005, church attendance fell in all fifty states.[7]

Nor is this trend a new phenomenon: American churches have not kept up with population growth in over a century.[8]
Then, to add insult to injury, when a sampling of non-Christians were asked to rate eleven groups in terms of respect, they rated evangelicals tenth. Only prostitutes ranked lower.[9]
Are believers more moral? No. When pollster George Barna – himself an evangelical – looked at seventy moral behaviors, he didn’t find any difference between the actions of those who were born-again Christians and those who weren’t. His studies and other indicators show that divorce among born-agains is as common as, or more common than, among other groups. One study showed that wives in traditional, male-dominated marriages were three times more likely to be beaten than wives in egalitarian marriages.[10]
Evangelicals constitute not 25 percent of the U.S. population – as they have claimed – but at most 7 percent, and their numbers are falling, not rising. All these numbers come from the churches themselves. (Wicker, p. 67) While evangelical women make up at least 3.5% of the population (half of 7%), they make up about 20% of the women who get abortions.[11]
“The Spirit,” as the Gospel of John says, “blows where it will.” Where is it blowing now? Adding together the data from pollsters, evangelical researchers and Pope Benedict XVI, it’s not a stretch to say the Spirit – the spirit of life and the truth that can make you more free – has settled in the land of atheists, nonbelievers, and church alumni.

As much as I participate in ATOT religion threads, I rarely, if ever start one. I read this article and thought I'd post it to the forum. I was actually pretty surprised at some of the numbers it cited. On the religion forums I visit the evangelicals have often touted their ascending population. Particularly interesting was the way non-Christians ranked Evangelicals. :awe:

Evangelicals are not growing in numbers, only in how loud they are. I think they crank up the volume every year to try to make up for their increasingly marginalized positions, which just makes them more marginalized.

Anyone who's been involved with church planting would know the truth. Most increases in churches are transfers, not new converts. The actual numbers are pretty bad.

The reality is that what most atheists believe is true. People use religion as a crutch. It becomes something they feel expected to do every Sunday. After a while some start to wonder why they bother, their life is not impacted in any way by going. Thus church attendance falls.

"But the Lord honestly spoke to me. And he took me to Moses standing at the burnish bush. And the Lord said, "I have one question for you." And I said, "What is that Lord?" "The bush is burning but it was not consumed, why do you think that was?" I said, "I don't know." He said, "Because that bush was burning with the right fire." Link

One of the most important confrontations that Jesus had during his ministry was on the topic of Sabbath where he said some famous words: "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."(Mark 2:27) So the same could be said of religion. God didn't make men to sit in pews, say preset prayers, and wear fancy robes with pointy hats. Religion was made by men to offer a comfort other than what God offers. The biggest example of this psychological affect was when Moses brought men from Egypt. Despite the miracles and constant presence of God, the men still turned to ritual and tradition when Moses was gone for a short time. Needless to say, both God and Moses were frustrated.

This too shall pass. As bad as it ever gets, we survive. So history has shown and prophecy foretells. Even if I should stand alone, I have no reason not to.

I do.

I would put the traditional whores above the evangelical ones.

I bet that quote from the pope was taken out of context. It was probably proceded with "People today are saying..."

I think its a good thing that religion is falling to the wayside. Realistically what has religion offered to humanity other than pain and suffering in various forms throughout the ages?

John 15:18-21
"If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

Matthew 24:8-14
All these are the beginning of birth pains.

"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Luke 21:12-16
"But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for My name's sake. "It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony. "So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute. "But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death,

The decline in numbers should be expected by Bible studying Christians, as should be the increasing persecution and antagonizing.

I see dropping numbers/attendance as a drop in false professions and false believers.

Personally not religious, but it offers a sense of coherence about the world and a purpose of living. It allows people the hope that despite how much frustration and suffering that goes on in their normal lives, as long as they follow the right path, they'll get eternal bliss. I could only imagine how peaceful and worryfree that could make a person.

All Religions eventually decline.

So these false profits have been around for awhile then? Maybe the one you follow is a false one?

Did someone say Benny Hinn?

Just the fact that he has such large audiences is fairly unsettling, as is the fact that so many of these people are very open to the power of suggestion - or else, less-likely, they just enjoy acting like morons on stage.
