It wasn't a matter of Stern wanting everyone to "play nice." It was a matter of respecting the privacy of Lange and his family since they made a very specific statement saying they would deal with the situation in a private manner, then release statements as they deemed necessary.
Howard's pissed at whoever leaked this story because he cares about Artie and his family and it was a surreptitious act to give the story to the media and thus hurt Artie's mother and sister.
Anyone who's heard the show knows they ALL make fun of each other's problems, and Artie's drug addiction and depression has not been spared from Howard's banter.

Wow, that's gotta be hard to stab yourself 9 times. Shooting yourself or OD'ing on drugs is kind of like a one and done thing.. it just takes getting the courage for a split second.
I've listened to Stern in the past, but it gets tedious for me after awhile. I like Artie, and I hope he gets his shit together....
I like it when Howard comments on the news and has interesting guests or has something interesting going on in his life that he talks about. Nobody interviews guests like Howard, he is the master of making even dull guests interesting. The girls getting naked in the studio I don't find all that interesting.
I'm betting he relapsed on the herion and that's why he tried to kill himself. That last week before he suddenly was absent he seemed pretty out of it, like he was when he was using.
