I think judges have an obligation to impartial opinion on the case, and have to allow a case to proceed if it has any merits, regardless of how minuscule that merit would be. I read the whole docket and it appears that the former cop tried to extort money from Doig, and after being denied, his lawyers put the whole thing in motion. This is even after the sister of the actual artist, Doige - deceased, testified in an affidavit that it's more likely her brother, and has evidence that it was her brother that was in the places and circumstances matching the probable outcome as he painted it.here's some legal document on the case:

It's funny how the painting itself holds almost no value. Just who made it. If Doig painted it, it's worth several million. If not, then it's worthless.
