I noticed that Best Buy is gonna sell the WD 160 GB HD for only $39 after $90 in rebates starting this Sunday (3/20/05). That's only $0.25 per gig. Seems pretty good to me!

What about COURTESY?

No thread crapping. If the subject matter of a deal does not interest you, do not post negative comments about it, or about other members, in the thread.

Possibly the worst examples we have had of this have been in posts for free religious items, such as bibles, etc. If you want to discuss religion, or any other such non-computer topic, do it in our Off Topic forum. The discussions in that forum cover a wide range of topics, but needless flaming and rude, mean-spirited posts are not welcome there, either.

Stick to discussing the deal. Do not post needless rude or trivial comments about someone else's posts. Flaming can only hurt someone's feelings. Nuisance posts, such as "In before the lock," "IBTL" or other needless bumps just recycle bad threads and force good ones off the first page of the forum.

Think before you post. Rude posts can kill a good deal. For example, posts for deals on sexually related items such as condoms and lubricants are ok, but if others cannot refrain from posting lewd or childish remarks, that would be reason to lock or delete the thread.

write down a serial number and type it into WD's website and see. Often the serials on on stickers outside the box of retail hdds. So you can check before you buy.

How trustworthy is the rebate? Or is it one of those blackhole rebates we'll never see once sent?

WD Retail has been 1-year warranty for quite some time now, unless something has changed. OEM is still 3-year.

Now I am torn. I want to upgrade my raid array to 160's. 2 of these with $180 in rebates or 2 maxtor's at staples out the door for $140.

Oh well I have some time to think about it yet.

And does the warranty start from the date of manufacture?

I bought this exact same drive during Best Buy's Black Friday sale for $29.99 AR. It had a rebate from BB and one from WD. They both came in with no hassle. I'm picking up a second tomorrow.

Both of my WD 80GB and WD 160GB HDs were purchased at BB in prior years, with both a WD and a BB rebate, and both came through fine, so as long as the rebates being offered are from WD and BB, even though they are a fairly high-dollar amount, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
That's a darn good price for a 160GB AR. I wonder if this is primarily older stock, or if it's the newer WD models with FDB? Mine were the older ball-bearing models (but with a three-year warranty). You can pay an additional $20 or so to extend the warranty (through WD) to three years too, if that concerns you.

You could also get a Seagate for $50 AR which does have FDB and a five year warranty

I've done WD rebates before and they've been fine. I think they came pretty quick, IIRC.

If these are the same ones they had on sale during Black Friday for $29.99, they are pretty quiet but not as quiet as my much older seagate 7200 rpm drives. You can hear some noise when there is a lot of disk activity but it's noiseless when its idle.
