there was a nascent nationalism in the south, divergent from any nationalism in the north (which was pretty much non-existent anyway) before, during, and after the civil war ("the south will rise again&quot, so in that sense, southerners were patriots. just like those crying "vive la france!"

Of course Southern soldiers were patriots. The VAST majority of them were not slave owners and thus had little motivation outside of patriotism, to their respective states predominantly, to fight and die. Slavery was not the overriding theme for Southern soldiers by any means, and anyone with a grasp of history knows that. I fail to see the controversy.

I wouldn't call Czar's post intelligent. Parrot-like, perhaps.

In fact a vast majority of them had jobs and occupations totally unrelated to slavery, such that the fall of slavery and the economic model in much of the South would have no impact whatsover on their future, and thus were merely fighting the war out of patriotism.

Yeah, subsistence farmers, you dolt. They weren't going to be recruited to work in the cotton fields if the slaves were freed -- they were free men already, remember? They didn't own slaves. The people who stood to lose the most were the plantation owners whose profits would have fallen considerably if they had to pay their field hands.

So you're actually saying that majority of the individuals who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War were subsitence farmers, and thus seperated from the slave economy of the South, fighting to protect state's rights? If that's your assertion, it's pretty much wishful thinking, Andrew.
