I went to an Asian Market yesterday to pick up some tea & rice (I'm a WASP, but have acquired a taste for decent rice).

The folks in the bulk rice area told me I really didn't want sticky rice, then the checkout woman told me "You got the wrong rice, let me get you the right rice."

My kids love this stuff, & I sort of like it, I usually buy 25 lbs of Jasmine & sticky rice every 3 months or so since I got a rice cooker. Why did they tell me I shouldn't buy sticky rice?

What color are you. Did that help?

edit: Sorry I didn't see you were an insect. Maybe that's why.

They were pretty upset to see an insect in the bulk rice section...

Question # 2, how to store this stuff? Got bugs in the last bags when there was 1/3 left. I'd spray insecticide but have this issue about spraying insecticide on my food...

Sticky rice is also known as sweet rice. it is used for special dishs and costs a bit more than regular rice.

White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.

I keep my rice in a glass bottle with a lid, but twenty five pounds is a big jar. I leave that size in the garage and share it with the rats that sneak in when I leave the door open to vent the dryer.

Yeah, you don't really want sticky rice as regular rice.
I tried those Japanese rice (short/round, tried different brands) for a year or so. They tasted pretty good but expensive. I think they are mostly for sushi rice not regular everyday big bowl of rice. They have some kind of coating on the rice to make them taste a little bit sweet.
Then I switched to long grain rice (longer/skinner, from Thailand). Parents said that is what most chinese families eats (in cantonese: Si Meu Mai). They tastes like regular steamed rice from big chinese restaurants. Have been buying those 25lb bags since. They are pretty cheap too.

I just stores the bag of rice somewhere dry. Close the opening using a potato-chips-bag clip. Never have any problem with bugs/ants.

jasmine rice shouldn't be sticky unless you added too much water. the texture and shape are different. sticky rice is usually for special dishes that require it.

th asian rice that you buy is great. its not that expensive and its smells good. you can cook so much of it and eat it with anything. you can store it in a big tupperware container, you know, almost like a trunk. you can find those at walmart or something. that way, you can seal it up and eat it without rats or insects getting in through the tupperware stuff. since there are so much rice, you can just scoop it out and clean it up. it doesn't go bad. enjoy

I empty out my bags of rice into a big Rubbermaid container similar to this. It's not airtight, but the seal is good enough to keep bugs out.

My parents had a rice dispenser. You dumped rice into it from the top. You pushed a button and it dispensed measured amount of rice from the bottom, so you never had to worry about eating the new rice before the old rice. I guess it worked similar to this one (complete with Engrish!).

Hmm...I never knew how rice cookers actually worked before this.
