I notice whenever I am in rowland heights (many chinese shopping centers), people are not very outgoing, don't start casual conversations with strangers, don't smile to people they don't know, etc. Is culture/social setting like this in china/taiwan also?

To a degree I would think...imagine coming from a city in China or Taiwan...you are talking millions and millions. Although when I've gone with my friends to those place s('m not asian) I've noticed the same thing towards STRANGERS, but the complete opposite when they deal with their friends or people they know.

Gotta agree with magomago on this being an asian.

Japanese also just like to be isolated, by the way. =0þ

Ok here's what you do:

Next time you're in one of these places, wave your arms all around while screaming "G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-UNNIIIIITTTT!!" and they will flock to you and everyone will wanna talk to you.

Of course not. If you're caucasian and you're in Taiwan...the chicks are always willing to chat. Simple as that. Just too bad I'm Asian.

Dude Taiwanese girls hella dig ABC guys. My friends went on that "Loveboat" thjing where you supposedly "take classes" in the morning like cultural and language classes but you get to go clubbing and have sex and drink and party your @$$ off at night / rest of the day, and damn they hella talk.

I don't know. I think a lot of fobs I see here in the US are more quiet. I see that in my math class too. However, it's a lot different with Asians born here. I'm Asian myself. Couple times of discussion for math and I was with a few Asian girls in our little group while the fob girls formed their group.. except while we talk to others, they don't really talk to others...

Language barrier?

They think you're exotic. I dunno. My friend in Wisconsin got hella attention cuz he was Asian and all the white ppl there talked to him all the time and the girls digged him. There were about a dozen Asians at his school supposedly.

Now that's the opposite where I come from. 60% Asian high school, 45% Asian college... ehhh..

i wouldnt say "shy," just different - shy is just comparison to our culture rather than on objective observation on their customs

you're the white devil. the mall is a temple to the white devil's ways. asians only go to the mall and buy things (that they will return later) just so the white devil doesn't catch on to the conspiracy that asians have against the white devil.

oh, maybe I should have read the actual post. It's because asians in asian malls are all afraid that one of their parents' friends will see them meeting strangers and the story will get back to their parents about the guy with the tattoo, or the chick that wasn't wearing a bra.

Yes, in general Northern Chinese and Taiwanese tend to be more shy around new people. They are extremely close to the families and friends that they know though.

Southern Chinese (Hong Kong <Cantonese>) tend to be more outgoing.

But being American born, I am more in between.

good luck getting them to smile at you, let alone start conversations out of the blue. Definitely culture thing. I tend to smile at strangers more since I'm an ABC but others likely walk looking straight ahead or at the ground and keep to themself.

Texans tend to be the friendliest people around. Talk to an American born asian here, and you will probably end up in a pleasant conversation.
