Asked about engagement ring diamond size

My sister in law's (sister of my wife) boyfriend is planning to propose to her soon and a few weeks ago he asked me about the size of the diamond in my wife's engagement ring. Is there any (realistic) reason why he'd be asking me this other than to establish a lower bound for his own purchase? I told him since I don't really care either way, but it seems a little smarmy. I like the guy but I can definitely see him feeling the need to get something bigger than what I got. He's just that type of guy. I should have told him it was either .2 carats or 1.8.

They say 2 months salary is expected for engagement rings. For those of us that don't want to have to take out a loan to buy the ring...... Maybe closer to 1 month.

Personally, I say he should just spend what he can spend on the ring and not worry so much about the size of the diamond.

he probably just wanted a base line for what size hers was since it is probably one he sees often to get an idea of size. And since his wife will compare it every time she sees it.

I took my wife to the store and had her pick. It was a test. She picked a 500.00 ring. I bought it and used the rest of the money to help buy our first house.

Had she picked a 5000.00 ring, I wouldn't of asked her to marry me.

I would have told him to get bent. Seriously. Something like "It doesn't matter dude, because you'll never be half the man I am".

I proposed with a $19.57 CZ from Walmart and my wife accepted. The real ring was hidden underneath and it was quite a bit more but my wife passed the test.

Yeah, the thought crossed my mind, but I decided to tell him. It really doesn't matter to me what he buys my SIL and neither I, nor my wife, is the type of person who would feel diminished regardless of what he comes up with. I figure that if "one-upping" me is really that important to him then he should feel free to have at it. If it makes him and my SIL happier, good for them.

Damn straight. My fiance told me if I had bought her a more expensive ring, she would've been pissed at me (we're saving for a house). People get so caught up in size and price, it's ridiculous. 2 months salary? Get lost, that's absurd. We have better things to put our hard-earned money into.

I paid half of one months salary, and the ring is worth one months salary. That 2 months salary thing is BS and a waste IMO.

uuuhhh yeah, her questionnaire was not filled out correctly, she often referred to me by the wrong name, her accent was actually kinda creepy, and she had a lot of 'relatives' over for her birthday that seemed to be criminal minded. :|

Issue with that is what exactly?

Women put men through "tests" constantly. Have their friends start flirting with their guy to see what they do, telling their man one thing just to see their response, etc. Women put men through tests all the time, but us men are assholes for doing the same to our woman?

No, greedy gold digging whores suck. My wife and I have matching two-tone gold bands. No stones, no giant engagement ring.

It's not about money. It's about common sense. If I wanted to buy my wife a $10K ring I could go pay cash today but I'm hardly about to go out and spend that kind of money on a worthless piece of carbon whose only real value is the fact that deBeers has spent billions of dollars convincing saps like you that you need to spend a lot of money on a worthless piece of carbon to prove your love.

If you want an interesting, attractive, rare stone, there are lots of things rarer than diamonds.

Seeing as how this thread is completely jacked anyway, I'll chime in. The thing that surprises me about all these guys "testing" their would-be fiancees is that they felt the need to test at all. I mean seriously, you're about to propose to a woman and you don't already know what her attitudes about money are? Or perhaps you think that she's been leading you on and you can trick her into revealing her gold digging nature using a bit of CZ bait? Wow... I hope it worked out for all you guys but I've never heard of someone setting their would-be spouse up like that (outside of movies/TV).

I sent her packing to the motherland after 23 months. I couldn't handle that all 6 of her brothers were staying with us in my 2 bedroom apartment. I asked for the ring back but she declined.

"They" as in the diamond companies.

If people always lived by the schedule of "They" this country would be in the biggest debt.. oh damn....

she wants the precious!! needs the precious!!!

OP, if he's "that kind of guy" then it sounds like he wanted a LCD so he would get something at least the size of your ring. I would say he just wanted a ballpark to start with but then you would obviously know him better that we do
