I would just overclock my gtx780 and not upgrade.
He is upgrading from a 760 not 780.

he order 1 new card to replace the 760

Even then a 480 is still ~50% faster than his other 780.

Mabe that is why the new rx580 releasing in a month will be faster and come in 8gb only.! Oh, and be $200.

So he just bought a $200 card with 4gb less memory, with lower core clocks, uses more power, and runs hotter for the same price.

Lol good old wccftech, how many rumors have they gotten wrong now?

The 4gb cards I listed were under $170, not $200. Why do you think they will use more power and run hotter when the 500 series is going to be higher factory OCs?

If anything spending twice that amount on an aging 1070 would be worse way to spend the money. Twice the price for at best 40% more performance?

Sorry you don't like all the facts I presented, but facts > feelings.

Dude, my girlfriend uses a r9 390 for gaming at 1440p. Can play witcher 3 just fine at high settings at 60fps or more. Please stop with this bullcrap. Not everyone needs ultra settings, especially when the difference between ultra and high is hardly noticeably.

Did she buy it today? With 4gb of memory?
NO that card is 2 years old! with 8gb of memory.
A proper card for 1440p almost 2 years ago, I agree.

I wonder why AMD re- made the 4gb 290x with the 8gb 390?
I bet its the same reason why we recommend a 6gb 1060 over a 3gb one!

I rest my case.

Remember that was a $300 card at the release date while the 4gb rx 480 was $200.

The 390 outperforms the 480 4gb version in many games still.

happy medium u crazy brah - rx480 scraping the low end really? Even in 9 months its going to be a strong card.

I agree though; at 1440p, gtx1070 is the way to go (haven't caught up on amd vega , assuming its out/even ready). at 1080p, or at select games that you know you will play, would be the reason i consider the rx480.

Me crazy? mabe.

In 9 months Nvidia Volta will be close to release and the gtx1060 and 480 performance will be low end brah.

and yes I agree , the 1070 is the way to go.

The 4gb 480 is a good card for 1080p using high settings (not ultra) with todays games.
The 4gb 480 card is not a good purchase for 1440p gaming now and especially within the next 6 months.
The new Xbox releasing in the fall will have better framerates and resolution than the OP's friend will be getting.
Yep, very ironic that the AMD crowd that is always pushing "future proofing" is trying to push a card for 1440p that you have to turn down settings to play *current* games, much less games in a couple of years. The 470 is clearly a great value, and the 480 and 1060 are very good cards as well, but they are all borderline for 1440p, and really are 1080p cards with a bit of extra performance for future proofing. Yes, the 1070 or 1080 are expensive relative to the lower tier cards, but that is the price you pay for higher resolutions.

Amazing you keep glossing over all the posts I have filled with FACTS. Current games running very well on a 480 @ 1440p running High vs Maxed.

but they are all borderline for 1440p

Please tell me again how its impossible to game @ 1440p on these?

And you mention Vega / Volta... those will just make the 1070 garbage tier as well then, so why waste the money on them when he could just buy the mid range Vega / Volta for a way better experience?

Don't put words into my mouth. I never said you could not play at 1440 with a 480. I said it was already a marginal card for 1440p. Thanks for proving my point for me though. There are already 2 games that can't hit sixty fps on high.

he upgraded the 760 to the 8gig 480 demon.
As soon as he gets it I am going to try and get them to compare it to his 780 and see if he will take the time to test it.

Guys lets cool down a bit here. First, congrats on the upgrade! Now, I think an 8GB 480 is a good upgrade for the GTX 760. That said, I think for high FPS @144Hz on 1440p, a bit more powerful card would be desirable, though a 480 should be doable, just need to tweak the settings a bit.

I am currently running a 1070, but may upgrade when Vega comes out, after comparing it to the 1080ti, I will make a decision.

I wanted a 1070, but I can't quite afford to be dropping that kind of coin on a video card. (Maybe if I got in on that $307 deal?)

I was using a 4GB RX 460, on a 40" 4K UHD TV, to play a little Skyrim vanilla @ 4K on my i5-6400 rig. It was fun, and mostly playable. I think that it was on low or med though. I didn't have the high-res texture mod pack DLC so the textures of things when you got up close was a little blocky. But it was in glorious 4K!

I don't play much in the way of games anymore though.

I recently picked up a Nitro 4GB RX 470, to replace the Nitro 4GB RX 460. Should be a step up, but I'm under no illusion that the RX 470 is a "4K card" for AAA games either. Just wanted something with a little more grunt, for Tekken 7 PC's release. Unsure if I'll want to play on 4K low, or 1080P High with that game. Maxed 60FPS is important for a "twitch fighter" IMO though.

Edit: I just checked my ebay, to find out when my RX 470 was scheduled to arrive, and it turns out, it went OOS. Ah well, I didn't need to spend that money...

760 to 480 8GB would definitely be a good feeling upgrade. I'm a 60fps Min or more gamer at native res and no lower than 2nd from the top options (e.g. High where Ultra is above it), so I buy with more power. If he's fine with drops below 60, as low as 30-40's, then a 480 8GB will be sufficient for a time. Personally I would find it unacceptable probably in 6 months time or even now on some games but that's because i've got high standards.

Congrats to your friend on the upgrade! I don't think you need more than 4GB at the moment if you are willing to turn down some settings. I play Witcher 3 @ 4K with a mix of ultra and high settings on a Fury Nitro 4GB, for example. However, with 8GB your friend will not have to worry about running out of VRAM in the foreseeable future, and it's likely the RX 480 will run out of horsepower before 8GB becomes insufficient

I forgot this latest game @ 1440p. Remember the 4gb card is even slower!

Oh the 1070 is not even getting 60 FPS+ anymore with this new game. Waste of money, you might have to.... LOWER THE SETTINGS A BIT! LOL

OP plz get a 1080 TI otherwise you'll be back here in 9 months for another upgrade... . . . .

Edit: I saw you are upgrading two systems, in that case grab two okay?
