ASP.NET / C# - Read DB and apply coordinates to picture

Hello,

This is an idea I had for my work. I'd like to create a site that has conference room names coordinated on a map that's dynamic. I would read a MySQL database that would plot the conference room on a png somehow . Is there any API that can help do this?

It's kind of a broad question. A MySQL database can't plot points on images, but it can store the coordinates of points. If you had something like maps of the floors of a building as images, and you assigned some coordinate system that you could use to specify the locations of meeting rooms, then you could store the definitions of those rooms in the database, with links to schedules, current occupants, whatever. You could read that crap out of the db and present it to a user graphically in a number of ways. In .NET there are some pretty easy ways to manipulate images, but I'm not sure what platform you're using.

Yes that's along the lines of what I was thinking. What do you mean by platform? I would be using Visual Studio 2010 and the latest .NET.

Your description is kind of vague - but I agree with mark, it sounds like it'd be better to start out with a floor plan and draw dynamically on top of that. To draw the layouts of the rooms would be a bit more complicated.

.NET has a built in graphics library that makes creating/editing images pretty easy.

Yeah, that's what I meant by platform. So check out the System.Windows.Media.Imaging namespace. You'll have to do some Googling around, but I think everything you need is in there.

If it's a desktop application then you can read in the base map image, draw whatever you want on it, and then stuff it into an image control.

If it's a web application you have some other options, and some things get a little more complex.

Interesting... I have this exact project coming up for one of my side work consulting. Are you competing with me?!? LOL.

Anyways, I'm doing mine with MSSQL 2008 backend using VS 2010. I'm making my own "api" from scratch using WCF. I use the pixels/configurablesizedivider for the coordinate system.
