ASP vs. PHP; then I need a host

Here is my dilemma. I know ASP and I am good at ASP. I checked out a PHP book from the library and don't like it's C/C++ type feel. However, ASP is not open source so it costs more money to host.

If I go with PHP, then I am going with Rossman's reccomendation of Addaction.net.

What are some good/cheap ASP hosts? It doesn't necessarily have to be .NET. I also would like SQL Server preferably.

Am I crazy for not wanting to learn PHP?

seems to me you are at more of an advantage knowing how to use BOTH .asp and .php

there is a web site that rossman recommends for investigating web hosting, find a post of his with the info, do a search on hot deals or OT for "web hosting" or something like that an look for the rossman posts

I'm in the same boat that you are. I host with a company called Everplanet. They don't offer much in the way of space, and they aren't incredibly cheap, but they've been extremely reliable and they give referral credits.

I don't ever care to learn PHP either because in all the jobs I've worked nobody could even spell it - we're all microsoft. However, as you've noticed I noticed too that PHP hosts and MySQL are a hell of a lot cheaper than SQL server mixed with IIS to run an ASP app. I'd love to know of any cheap hosts as well, but I think that given licensing issues you're going to find it quite difficult to find one. Perhaps you could host at home if you have a stable broadband connection (and more than the scant 128 kbps most of us have, though that's more than enough bandwidth to serve up streamlined pages if you're not going to have too many visitors).

Not too bad. I read that as $35/month for the cheapest plan with SQL server 2k, and perhaps $12/month if you pick the $10 plan and go with the $2 MS Access addon.

I think you are about right. I do the $12/month option you mention, and it works fine for what I use it for, which is very low impact. I just wish the cheap plan were more like 50MB - 10MB is pretty tiny.

If you go with PHP you will have SO many more options available to you. It's really not that hard.

It looks like if you want ASP.net they will charge $199 instead of $99. I didn't know there was that much of a difference.

Yeah, quite a bit... but I don't see the reason for the increase in charge... it's a novelty charge meesa thinks.

That's still only $15/mo.

Can you please expand on that? I think ASP is pretty darn powerful and easier to use (for me at least).

I personally use fluidhosting for my sites and I have been very happy with their support and service. They do offer affordable plans for windows and *nix based hosting so you might want to check them out.

The only practical reason to have a dedicated IP is for an SSL certificate.

So no I wouldn't get one.
