I'm also running a Saphhire HD3850 AGP and I never had any trouble with it. The card perform pretty nice, the drivers always done their job well. Plays good in games, it's performing hardware video encoding and decoding. I'd say it's an HIS failure rather than an ATI issue.

The overclocking tutorial is almost done, just got to add the pics

There is no point in using AGP when you are buying a new graphics card and you have an available PCI Express X16 slot (that runs X4 bandwidth).

Then you should definitely go with PCI Express, as an equivalent AGP card will cost you 50% more.

Well, the GeForce GT 240 w/GDDR5 is a good choice for starters, it will be slightly faster than HD 3850 AGP. There are often rebate offers on this card that makes it a pretty good deal @ under $60 (USD). GeForce GTS 250 and Radeon 5770 would be a substantial upgrades.

Hi Alan
You should not have to adjust any settings for the PCI-e card to work as the board automatically recognizes which slot is being used etc; heck you can even run an AGP and PCI-e card at the same time for at least four monitors all at once.
If you are familiar with the bios, in the chipset section there are a few things that you can specifically enter for PCI-e graphics card use but I have never done any testing to see if that increases performance compared to leaving the system in default settings.

Check Passmark benchmarks, choose a card with better results than HD3850 AGP and then check for its price.
