The E7200 is only compatible with a 1.93a bios, so my suggestion to try an earlier bios is only meaningfull if you have another CPU to try in your mobo ?

And flashing a mobo with a lower version bios is no problem when done with DOS ASRFLASH program, not sure if it would be equally successful using AFUWIN from within windows ?

ALL mobo Bios flashing is much more successfull (and more reliable) when done in DOS ---> so do you have a Floppy Drive --> if so, then make yourself a DOS bootable floppy from which to do all future bios flashing?

I just flashed mine with the latest BIOS from Asrock's website, it's 1.90, is 1.93a the
hacked BIOS??

Not to be off topic, but what are you guys running as torture tests to insure that youre OC is stable on this board? I used OCCT for my 305FSB OC on my e6600 and it was stable. It crashed at 306. Are there any other tests out there that are easily downloaded and easily run?

The test, I use the latest Prime95 (which supports multiple cores now), and Orthos (which supports just 2 cores).

I have a question about memory.
I just bought some new DDR2 800 RAM. I'm running it at the max 667 in the board.

667, CAS 4, 4-4-12 timings.

Now, I thought DDR2 667 RAM was PC5300, or "5300 MB/sec".
My DDR 400 RAM was PC3200, or 3200MB/s.

I'm getting only 3900 MB/sec at the current settings. What am I missing? I get the same "5.0" Vista score for my new DDR2 667 as I did with the DDR400 ram.

Everest lists these timings:
CAS Latency (CL), 4T
RAS to CAS delay (tRCD), 4T
RAS Precharge (tRP), 4T
RAS Active Time (tRAS)
Row Refresh Cycle Time (tRFC), 35T
Command Rate (CR), 2T
RAS to RAS Delay (tRRD), 3T
Write Recovery Time (tWR) 5T
Write to Read Delay (tWTR), 3T

Bank Interleave, 4-way
Dual Channel mode

Haven't done any testing outside of a playing Silent hunter 3, highest temps got to
44-48 and no crashes or BSOD'S yet. The E4600 is a mild OC, only going from 2.4
to 3.0Ghz whereas the E2XXX folks are squeezing well over 3Ghz out from a $68
part. The Asrock would probably not be the best board for that type of OC as there
is no provision in BIOS to raise Vcore..

I've had a 4coredual-sata2 for about a month now and there is one thing I'm having trouble with. I can't get the on board sound to work. It isn't a huge deal since I have a USB headset but the problem with that is the sound quality slowly degrades when playing games. Every 30-45 minutes I have to end the game and restart it (but I don't actually need to reboot the machine). So I'd like to use the on board if possible. I've tried to install the driver from the disk and the most current one from the Realtek website and neither will install. I'm using XP, not vista. The sound works in a live-boot session of ubuntu, but not windows. The device manager page from system properties shows there are two devices that are not installed properly, one is "PCI device" which is there if I enable the audio in bios but not there if I disable it in bios, and the other is "Wan Miniport (L2TP)" which is always there but listed as not functioning properly, I have no idea if that has anything to do with the sound isssue but thought it worth mentioning. The CPU is a celeron 420 bsel modded to 266 default, overclocked to 314. I can get it to boot and even run 3dmark at 320 but it won't pass prime at that speed. At 314 it's stable and passes prime (3+ hours minimum). Anyone know what I should do?

The PCI device with the exclamation mark is the onboard sound, mine went away after I installed the driver from Realteck's site. Perhaps try uninstalling the audio then reboot and
let XP load the driver again. Oh, welcome to AT, lot's of smart folks here so maybe you
can get some help!..

If the Realtek's demo is working then the driver is correctly installed, look under "sounds"
in the control panel, are they turned on??.

That's what's nutz! The driver is installed correct. (no bangs in device manager), but in control panel under sounds it shows: "No audio device present".
There is also no speaker in the task bar. (obviously)
Is there a proper order to installing the drivers for the 1st time?

I uninstall the USB, then reboot, then try to let XP install the drivers automatically but XP can't find the driver unless I choose the path to search for it and when I install it manually it won't work. I'm also getting a "uninstall failure" error when I try to remove it, so I'm wondering if something is sticking around gunking up the works. I'm not sure what to do.

Mine was the same problem with the HD sound driver (can't uninstall the faulty driver). That was the 1st problem I had by letting windows autodetect and installing a driver on it's own- which by the way must have happened thru microsoft updates; because I still had a question mark and "unknown device" in device manager for the HD sound and never even ran those updates from the CD. Then after a reboot or two from MS updates, I noticed I now had a "Realtek High Definition Audio" driver installed but with a red exclamation mark I believe. Sound still did not work. So I tried to reinstall the driver manually and ran the s/w from the CD only to keep getting, "can't uninstall the driver" or "driver install failed (after s/w install). This forced me to RE-INSTALL WINDOWS again. At this point after windows installed, I went right to running all the drivers from the CD in order of list ( 4in1, Lan, USB2.0, & HD sound install). Now- I have no bangs (errors/exclamations or question marks) in device manager, but have no speaker in the taskbar and control panel shows "no audio device" installed under "sound". Another words, I STILL HAVE NO SOUND! But the wierdest of things is that when I bring up the REALTEK sound control panel now, I can run the REALTEK demo and I get sound. NUTZZZZZ!!! What is going on here? Anyone have a clue to solve this? Thank you...

Well, I'm stumped, only thing I can think of is DirectX, is it installed? I once had a vid
card that would not work without directX installed!. Try using the search thread function
and see if anyone else has had an audio problem similar to yours..

Hi all.

I've been experimenting on the bench with a second 4coredual board I have and am seeing some odd results in overclocking experiments, for example, has anyone seen Orthos run for 7 hours and then fail?

Hardware:
4coredual-sata2 modo bios ver 1.6
E2200 CPU
Crucial Ballistix Tracer 1G Memory stick (PC2-6400)
Enermax 350W PS
Video card: oldie ATI 7000/7200
OS: Winxp
HD: 80G IBMGXP model

I was surfing Newegg recently and saw the Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2x1GB memory for $65 with a $40 rebate and free shipping, so I bought some to tinker with. I never would have imagined 2 Gig of memory for $25 in years gone by.

I did NOT do a BSEL mod since forcing the E2200 to boot at 266 FSB is a default bootup CPU freq of 11*266 or 2926 MHz which is a bit hi.

All of this hardware is setup on my workbench, no case is used, bench is basement located, ambient temperature is rather cool so overclocking experiments are fun since temps never get out of hand.

I did implement this Vcore mod: http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=192571
using a 100K 20-turn precision pot

For those interested in knowing, I am uncertain how the poster for the VR zone Vcore Offset voltage mod came up with his formula to calculate the offset or final Vcore voltage, but this formula from the L6714 chip datasheet is very accurate to calculate the offset votage generated:

Ros=(1.240/Vos)*Rfb

where

Ros = offset resistance inserted in place of the zero ohm resistor (the potentiometer)
Vos = offset voltage desired (to be added to VID programmed Vcore setting)
Rfb = feedback resistor value from the Vcore circuit (which is 4.4 Kohm according to the VR zone link above, and appears to be the same for the 4coredual-sata and the 4coredual-vsta boards)

So, if you want a .1v Vcore increase,
Ros=(1.240/.1)*4400=54560 Ohms

What I have found is this, you MUST be careful when adjusting the variable resistor or potentiometer as the L6714 chip/circuit apparently does NOT respond to power-on Ros adjustments. IOW, one cannot view the Vcore output in the BIOS voltages/temp screen while adjusting the pot/trimmer as the voltage does NOT change until a 5vsb power cycle has occured. You must power down fully (kill standby power even) and then power up the mobo to realize the changed Vcore and Vos. I just about fried the CPU as I was attempting to adjust Vcore by viewing Vcore in the BIOS and cranking on the pot and seeing no changes, then on reboot and jump into BIOS saw Vcore all the way up to 1.8v, oops, a quick kill of the PS was warranted at that moment. Some probing around revealed that the L6714 chip has power applied to it from the 5v standby circuit, thus it appears 5vsb must be turned off to "reprogram" the L6714 chip with a new Ros resistance.

FYI The VR Zone link above provides this formula to calculate the resulting Vout: voltage:

Vout=Vstock/(1 + 3,000/Vos) and I've not bothered to figure out where it came from in the L6714 datasheet.

Anyway, I tried running the system with memory setting of 266 for the Ballistix stick. I could not get a stable overclock above 255 FSB, even with Vcore bumped up by about .1v to 1.42. I then, just for grins, set the memory type/Dram Freq to 333 and all other settings on "auto" for memory, and also enabled the "flexible" mode just to see what the system did, and the BIOS sets the mem/fsb ratio to 1:1. Now comes the odd part, my overclocks are now stable at 266 FSB, and a recent Orthos test at 270 FSB ran 7 hours before a failure. Seems rather odd to have a failure after so many hours of testing. I suppose it could have been a droop of Vcore in response to a load change.

Anyone else seen this type of result? Temps (viewed using the Coretemp program) never got above 55C during this testing, and were mostly in the hi 40s.

Do you suppose the "auto" settings are somehow different for the memory timings with Flexible enabled versus disabled, and 266 or 333 memory speed selected, even tho the FSB-MEM ratio is still 1:1 per CPUz under either setup? CPUz reports memory timings of 4-3-3-9 with 333 Dram Freq setup in BIOS and Flex enabled. The memory sticks are spec'ed at 4-4-4-12 at 400 Mhz and 2.2v per their SPD data.

My other 4coredual-sata rig uses an E2180 CPU (BSEL mod'ed), which runs at 286 FSB for a cool 2860 MHz overclock that is all day stable on prime95/orthos. In my estimation, running at 286 FSB and 10x with the E2180 is probably a better OC than 270 FSB and 11X with the E2200 since memory speeds are a bit better at FSB of 286. So my advice to anyone purchasing a CPU, buy the E2180 and save $10 (or so) and likely you will get a better overclock on this mobo.

OK, I went back and did a little more investigation as these things always have an explanation, and I found out that when I select 266 or 333 for the Dram Freq in the BIOS, and Flexibility Mode disabled (all other mem settings on Auto, AGP voltage HI and Dram voltage on HI), the resulting DRAM freq is 340 (with CPU FSB at 255) as reported by CPUz, a 3:4 ratio, which explains why CPU has problems at 270 MHz with Flex turned "off" as this combination of settings causes the memory to run at about 340, perhaps higher than the chipset can handle, dunno. Guess I need to go back and fiddle with memory settings to see what it takes to get stable operation with the higher Dram freq.

Turning Flexibility "on" in BIOS gives a DRAM freq equal to CPU FSB or 270 MHz regardless of whether Dram Freq is set to 266 or 333 in BIOS. Timings for memory with Flex enabled are 4-3-3-9 at 270 MHz CPU FSB, and mem timings with Flex "off" are 4-4-4-12 and Dram freq of 340 and CPU FSB of 255 (can't boot winxp at 270 CPU FSB and Dram freq of 340, but system DOES boot up at FSB of 255 and Dram freq of 340).

Interesting stuff!

Edit:

Orthos failed again after an 8 hour run so I bumped the Vcore up a bit more, am now at 9 hours 16 mins and running with a vcore that measures 1.432v by DVM.

I'd like to upgrade CPU and memory on my Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2 (NOT 2.0, mine is the old one), flashed with BIOS v1.90, with 1G DDR+Celeron-420. Very appreciate if anybody can see if my upgrade plan is feasible.

If I didn't read incorrectly, that's what I am going to do:

1. Buy two 2GB DDR2-667 PC2-5300 (16 256x4 DRAM), I assume VIA chip can hold High Density ram (correct?), and I understand only ~3G is recognized on this motherboard.

2. Buy E7200. I have only limited power supply and weak air cooling system, 45nm will probably do better. Did anybody actually test if E7200 works on Rev 1.0 (not 2.0)?

3. Flash 1.93a BIOS. Did anybody actually flash 1.93a on Rev 1.0 and make it work(not R2.0)?

a. clear CMOS settings by jumper before and after flashing new BIOS.

b. Flash new BIOS by AFUWIN v4.22, with "Program all blocks" and "Destroy CMOS checksum" options selected.

4. Correct MAC by MACtool
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...d=2063964&STARTPAGE=70

I'm not seeking OC, thanks a lot for your suggestion!

Well I just put an old 20gig drive in my system and installed windows then went right to the audio driver installation to see if that would solve my problem. The installer from the CD didn't work, I got the same "failed installation" error message as usual, then (without rebooting or doing anything else) tried to install from the CD a second time and this time it worked, so now I'm backing everything up so I can do a fresh install and hopefully I will get the sound working on my full sized hd.

2 x 2Ghz DDR2 RAM was recognized as 2916 MEG RAM, so almost 3Gig. 1.93a BIOS worked fine on my rev 1 board. GO FOR IT, because it ran great and I could get 305 FSB with stock everything using my e6600. BTW, I had AGP 9600 Radeon.

I tried searching but either no one has touched this subject or search isnt working. I'm thinking of putting OSX on my PC. My Specs: 4coreDual Sata2, P4 2.8ghz, 2gb DDR2800, BFGTech 7950gt OC (PCI-e, 256mb), Audigy2, 1 IDE drive, 1 IDE DVDRW, Zonet USB2/Firewire adapter card.

I've read on other forums about the Kalaway OSX version running quite well on 4coreDual Sata2, even on a P4 like mine. I dont wanna dual boot, so I got another spare IDE HD I can throw OSX on as to not mess with my XP drive. However, as I've never done this I have a few questions. Apparentely the Kalaway DVD has EFI emulation and its supposed to be much easier to install than other methods. What about BIOS settings? I've read I need to change some BIOS settings here and there, but cant find an post detailing the exact settings that are changed. And do I have to go into BIOS and revert to changes bac and forth when I boot between OSX and XP?

So has anyone here been running their own Hackintosh on this mobo? Was it hard to install, does it work at all etc?
