Has anyone tried the new modded 1.70b bios from that German website? I haven't been able to figure out the difference between the 1.70a and 1.70b. Anyone with German skills care to check? I don't have the link handy, but it's somewhere a few pages back in this thread.

Not a whole lot to report on that

link to the bios at the bottom of the page http://www.pc-treiber.net/download_kategorie_108.html

Changelog:
Neue Biosoption: "Enhanced Halt State"
- weitere Änderungen sind unbekannt

Translated out of the top of my head it states:

New bios option "Enhanced Halt State"
- further changes are unknown

I didn't try it out

If i remember well, this modded bios somewhat upgraded CPU power saving features. But personally i wouldnt go for upgrade from unknown modders without realiability and reputation. Dont made piece of crap from your mobo.
Anyway, iam more interested in using some newer PCIe Graphics card, especially Geforce 8800 GTS and new Radeon X2900XT. Can someone who has good access to HW post some 3DMARK 2006 scores or even some stability report? I have seen article on german THGuide about runing High End Cards in PCIe 4x mode and unfortunately there is quite noticable performance penalty on 4lanes mode.
Has anyone real life experiance with 8800 or 2900?
Thanx

Speaking about graphics cards... when inexpensive DX10 cards become available I'll probably buy one. It's my understanding that a couple of manufactures will make AGP DX10 cards. I wonder if a somewhat higher-end AGP card will beat out a mid-range PCI-e that's working through a 4-lane PCI-e interface?

So, here is i hope informationaly rich link about runing high end VGA in PCIE 4 lanes slot. Those who dont understand german language may find useful at least graphs with test results, because hard cold facts talks clearly and internationally.
http://hardware.thgweb.de/2007/04/27/pcie-pci-express-grafikkarten/. Who wants to read more, use translator babelfish.altavista.com , its quite usable.
Its indeed interesting, what comes from test results. It seems that most notable perfomance drop follows when you use Geforce 8800 GTS in PCIe 4x mode in Call of Duty 2 game. Difference between PCIe x4 and x16 is almost half!!! On the opposite, Radeon X1950 XTX has notable drop only when inserted in totally crippled PCIe slot - x1. What is even more interesting, another tested game, Open GL based QUake 4 is showing perfomence drops only when both VGA are used in PCIe x1! Indeed interesting. It seems that larger performance penalty occurs sometimes, in some games only.... Too bad that i dont have chance to test such cards at the moment...

? have 6600 C2D 2.4+2GB DDR2 667 and 8800gts 320MB working with Asrock 4core dual vsta. I have 7800 score with 3dmark 2006 in Vista.

I think i have a score of 400-500 below from motherboards with 16x. Its not so huge the diferrence between 16x and 4x.

The biggest difference is with 1x pci express slot. I suggest you to buy this 8800 or 2900. You will be amazed from the graphics and how smooth they are.

Has anyone tried overclocking on this board with the Pentium D 945? Obviously C2D's fly on this board but what about Pentium D's?

Thanx, nice feedback. Can you post what brand of 8800 GTS you have confirmed working and stable? 7800 points on Default in 3DMark 2006 is nice result, thats 2800 more than i have now with my config /in signature/. Also, have you tried to run 8800 GTS first in Windows XP? I have heard about some problems with drivers... i am not sure i want VIstas right now. Thanx for response...

complain, thanks, this is most interesting.
There is another THG article from 2004 which goes even further and also tests some older cards (which is what I have) at PCIe modes from x1 to x16:
http://hardware.thgweb.de/2004/11/05/pc...hleuchtet_alle_modi_im_test/index.html
It was clear that in many cases there was practically no difference between x4 and x16, which is reassuring for owners of the 4CoreDual-VSTA.

Can anyone provide a link to a comparison of AGP and PCIe x4 cards on this motherboard? I have a Radeon 9600LE and an X600; at the moment I'm using the AGP card, and as I have had a lot of problems with my motherboard swap I'm not keen to embark on more experiments. But I wonder if the X600 would be better? Both are quite low-end cards by present standards, of course, but that's what you get at our local computer flea-market.

nob problem, allenlux So if i undrestand your post well, you have 9600LE AGP and you want to try Radeon X600 PCIe? I think you can try it without bigger problems, as you said, THGuide article from 2004 clearly shows that OLDER VGA dont have problems with PCIe x4. Unfortunately, performance benefit form this VGA swap would be minimal in 3D, because both card are real low end according today standarts... Maybe you can sell them both and buy some Radeon X1950 GT, PRO or XT, as all of them should run in PCIe slot without bigger performance penalty.
Anyway, Radeon ASUS EAX600XT/HTVD is listed in official ASROCK PCIe Graphic Slot compatibility list, as whole X700 and x800 product line, so if you will need to use X600 it should be without problems.

My card is XFX 8800gts 320MB. I have both windows xp and vista. No problem at all. The card runs perfect with the new drivers.

I think Asrock should put this card in the support list of vga cards. Lost planet demo rocks with this card.

Before this card i was thinking of x1950 pro. But with 250 euro 8800gts 320MB is the best choice value for money.Take it and you wont regret it.I will buy soon a new motherboard with better chipset with pci-xpress 16x and i will make it 15-17% faster because this card has many overclocking capabilities.

complain, thanks for answering, but my question wasn't whether the X600 card would work - I'm sure it will - but whether there would be any improvement in performance. I'm sure I've seen an article somewhere comparing AGP and PCIe performance on this mb with similar graphics cards, but I can't recall where.

But anyway, as you say these are both real low end cards. I may even consider buying a new card

I think that this maybe what you have seen.

This board is the same as 4CoreDual-VSTA for all intents and purposes.

IF you had a ROM reader/writter with JTAG capabilities, I'd say go for it. Only thing then would be if you somehow burned out the chip in the process, which I do not think is possible(unless you accidentally short a few pins out somehow).

U must have differend timings then me , because i get 5789 in sandra at 266/300fsb for those same memory chips
I have memory timings on auto
I don't even know if higher or lower numbers would be better for cas & co

Mr Vain, yes, thanks, that's the article - concluding that there is less than 2% margin between AGP and PCIe on this mb.

I'm at 3-3-3-8. I haven't really tried to do much on the settings other than set the voltage at high. I tried 2-2-2-7 but the computer froze up when I started Sandra.

I have been holding off on posting till I could do some more extensive testing, but I can throw some quick info up...

Initial configuration (Stable):

CPU: E4400 @ 2.85Ghz Orthos and MemTest86+ Stable w/Stock Cooling
RAM: Patriot 1GB (2@512MB) DDR 2-3-2-5 1T(Running default BIOS settings, set to 400Mhz/2.5-3-2-5 according to CPU-Z)
GPU: nVidia Gainward 6800GT 256MB AGP

The only BIOS settings I changed on the 1st boot were FSB and Memory Voltage...

A snippet from my build log:
BIOS - Well the BIOS is a little strange to me, but it is really quite simple. Hit F2 for BIOS options. As this board is geared to the person wanting to migrate to C2D on a budget, and not the OCing Enthusiast. There are some basic overclocking features that I will get into later. BIOS version was left as shipped, at v1.50. I went straight for 290 FSB for 2.9 Ghz on the E4400 with it 10X multiplier. Initially I left the memory timings at default and bumped the RAM Voltage to "High". Yes, that is really all the control you have over the memory voltages... F10 saves and reboots as usual.

Though I initially set the FSB @ 290 and installed WinXP w/o issue, I have since had to drop the FSB to 285. I have since tightened the timings to 2-2-2-5 1T manually, Orthos stable.

You can find that build log HERE.

Current Configuration (Stable):

CPU: E4400 @ 2.85Ghz Orthos and MemTest86+ Stable w/Stock Cooling
RAM: OCZ 2GB (2@1GB) DDR2 PC28500 4-4-4-12 1T (PC28500 is OVERKILL, but I had this from another build)
GPU: EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB (OCed to 659 Core and 1030/2060 Memory)

I had a terrible time figuring out what I needed to do to get this PCIe card to become stable at the OCed FSB settings (Before overclocking the GPU). It would become rock stable if I dropped to default FSB. To make a VERY long story short, I simply changed the Overclock Mode to SYNCH and it set the PCIe bus to 112. After that no more problems. After testing I overclocked the GPU to the above figures, testing along the way.

A subjective observation that I posted to my CS:S forum:

Video-
Testing with my nVidia 6800GT AGP 256 MB pulled from my old Intel Netburst P4 2.6 Ghz/AGP Rig. So far, just upgrading my CPU has produced a 2-3X's increase in my FPS in CS:S (With GREATLY increased video settings). This was far better than I was expecting! CS:S is becoming quite bloated, and no longer performs as it did on lesser systems. You can read through the forums at Steam and find many people having very large drops in frame rates this year, after the past several updates. Most began having the largest drops after the update to the chat box and voice codec. I did a fresh install of CS:S on this system, and ONLY CS:S, was a 4 GB download. It seems I was correct in my previous assumption that due to the bloat and poor optimization of this, my favorite game of all time, my CPU had become my bottleneck.

I will be testing with a nVidia 8800GT 640MB in the future. Yes this board accepts many 16x PCIe cards, but it is only electrically 4x, so this will be a very interesting test. As most people will be migrating slowy from old components, this will be an interesting test for further migration. From most of my reading on hardware forums, it seems it actually does pretty well, but does not perform on par with current enthusiast motherboards and chipsets that natively support PCIe 16x. I fully expected this, but for it's price, this board can possibly be a VERY competent stop gap for a nice slow migration as people can afford thier new components.

I know it's corny, but I have a build log started over at EggXpert. If you decide to check it out, drop a comment and rate it. I'll be updating with some of these figures soon.

Hope this post helps someone out...

Ankh

Today I set the PCIe to 117 as someone had previously stated should be done even though I'm using an AGP card. This allowed me to move up to 295 fsb 3-3-3-8 & get above 6100 on the Sandra memory bandwidth benchmarks. Previously at 295 fsb the computer was a little flaky & it's smooth now. However, I cannot go above 295 at all, nor can I lower my memory timings at all while at 295.

I have read several places about the PCIe from 111-117 manually. I just noticed it jump to 112 when I set to SYNCH, and honestly, I don't much care about 10-15 Mhz on the FSB.

I was really only testing this for it's viability as a cheap upgrade path for those stuck with DDR and AGP systems. (It has honestly exceeded my expectations by ALOT.)

Now that I have things perfectly stable at 2.85 Ghz, and the 8800 GTS 640 OCed to 659/1030(2060 Effective), I may just play around with it some more to see if I can eek ANYTHING else out of it.

Then it's time to tighten down the DDR2 timings and call it a week...
