For sure there was a lot of luck involved.
Poor eyesight and shaky hands did not make it any easier.
I was aware of the other mod that you mentioned, but I had no need to take out the board at the time.
I now have a new ASUS v60 cooler to install (I have to remove the board to install it) so I will be trying this mod next. Thank-you everyone for the valuable information that appears in this thread. I will post some new results when I am done.

I ordered the EVGA 8800GT from Newegg. I should be getting it on Thursday. Crossing my fingers that it works. If it does work, I know the x4 PCI Express will cripple it somewhat, but it should be substantially faster than my 7900GS. Any word from people with 8800GTS cards? How's the performance.

Tom's Hardware has interesting charts on x1-x16 PCI Express performance: http://tinyurl.com/3xnd37

I'm also thinking of getting an 8800GT to replace my aging radeon9800Pro. I'd also like to know which makes come with the 6 pin PCI-E to 2 Molex connectors in the box and which makes you have to buy the adapter seperatly. As I have a 600Watt Power supply that doesn't have a 6 pin PCI-e plug .
Thanks

If a 8800gt can break 10,000 in 3dmark06 on the 4x pcie, it just may be the right card to replace a x1950pro.

Found this on HardOCP:

http://tinyurl.com/yw87wp

ASRock tech support believes that the 8800GT will work on the 4CoreDual mobo. And if the 8800GTS is any indicator, performance hit will be 10-14%.

I should be able to verify this on Thursday when I get the 8800GT. I really don't want to buy another mobo. I'm holding out for a Penryn, X38 mobo, and DDR3 for next year.

but do i really wanna go back to Nvidia? The 7xxx series was a nightmare with bad drivers and poor image quality. Someone convince me the 8xxx series is that much better?

Got my 8800GT. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. I'm using the 2.10 bios. The GT fan runs loud and the computer refuses to post. Maybe an updated bios could fix this problem, but I've given up. I ordered a Gigabyte DS3 motherboard. I've been very happy with the 775dual and 4Core motherboards, but it's time to move on.

most reports say the 4coredual type boards aren't posting with the 8800gt. A new bios is probably needed. Man, i want that video card.

Smugla:

Windows XP
Doesn't post, so it's not a driver issue.
They're only selling 512 MB GTs for now

Hello People,

Just wanted to say that my 8800 GT also did not post. I have 2.10 bios as well. I thought maybe by selecting Pci-X as primary video adapter that might of helped. But no...unfortunately no post. So So So bummed. I even ordered a new PSU Corsair 550 to make sure I had enough juice...didn't know I was going to have to order a new mobo too...really bummed...Did I mention that already...

Peace.

I contacted technical support and received this message:

***
Dear ASRock America Customer,

Unfortunately, we do not have the eVGA Nvidia 8800GT PCIE VGA card in our lab, so we cannot provide you a firm answer.
Since the PCIE slot works with GeForce 7900GS PCIE VGA card, but not the eVGA 8800GT, then there might be an incompatible issue between the video card and the motherboard. Please try with different VGA card on the support list http://www.asrock.com/mb/vga.a...l=4CoreDual-VSTA&s=775

Just registered to post this:

Dear sirs,

Regarding my last contact I decided to buy this card despite not knowing if it was compatible with my chipset/MB.
Unfortunately, there seems to be an incompatibility between the board and the VGA card since the system doesn't even boot.

I tried to choose PCIE as my primary display in the BIOS but to no avail.

Is there any BIOS update planned for this motherboard aimed to ensure it's compatibility with the 8800GT card?
From what I could gather around the Internet all the people with ASRock products using this chipset ( VIA® PT880 Pro/PT880 Ultra ) are having the same problems with the 8800GT.

Thanks in advance,
Sr. Engenheiro

ASRock's support answer:

The nVidia 8800GT PCIE VGA card is GEN2 mode VGA card.
Unfortunately VIA PT880 PRO/Ultra chipset does not support GEN2 mode VGA card.
The only solution is to set 8800GT PCIE VGA card to GEN1mode.
We have tested ASUS 8800GT PCIE VGA card. After flashing GEN1 mode BIOS for ASUS 8800GT,
it works fine on PT880 PRO/Ultra chipset motherboard.
Card Working?
Please contact VGA card vender to get the VGA BIOS with GEN1 mode for your 8800GT PCIE VGA card.

Sorry for the inconveniences.

Yours truly,

ASRock

Seems a little strange to me... GEN2 mode? Flash the card to GEN1 mode?

Even if we get a GEN1 BIOS you are more than likely going to need another Mobo with PCI-E that the cards POST's on to be able to flash the card anyway

Hey all. 1st post on this site. Currently running an Intel Pentium 4 640 on an ASUS P5VDC-MX which is absolutely crap for overclocking. I'm soon hoping to move to this board because I have better options of changing ram volts and AGP volts. With this crap motherboard I'm currently using, I hit 4.0GHz on stock volts. If I get this board, I'm wondering if it will make the whole 290 FSB to give:

290 x 16 = 4.64GHz

Will it run out of volts before 290? I've so far hit 250 on stock. If it does, I can do a voltage mod to 1.42v.

What happens if there arn't enough volts to boot up? Can you still get into bios or do you have to clear cmos?

Current Rig:
Intel P4 640
ASUS P5VDC-MX
Kingston DDR2 667
Gigabyte 3D Rocket Pro
WD 200GB IDE HDD
SG 80GBIDE HDD
Delta 400w PSU
Gigabyte GeForce 7600GS AGP

Set bios boot failure to enable and no (clr cmos) should be necessary.

300FSB is achievable and boards can handle up to 1.6Volts ,I should now as I ran that for over one year with water cooling.

For CPU volt mods up to 1.6Volts.
