Anyone else having issues updating the sound drivers ?

When I ran the Windows Vista update advisor the other day it warned that it didn't know about the sound drivers.

Looked on the ASRock site and saw Vista 1.53 drivers... and on Realtek's own site later Vista 1.56 drivers (which include notes that they are for XP too and for ALC888 chipset).

However trying to use either of those downloads to update my Win XP MCE installation with 1.53/1.56 both begin with "No driver supported in this driver package".

My taskbar Realtek HD Audio Manager says it's 5.10.00.5273 and ALC888 and my notes from setting up the system back in December say I used the motherboard bundled CD with HD Audio Realtek 2.14 Driver R1.41.

Anyone able to make some sense of this for me ?

Are you running Vista or XP MCE?

There is a different driver package for Vista and XP:

Vista_R156.exe for Vista (32 and 64)

WDM_R154.exe for XP/2000 (32 and 64)

The XP/2000 driver versions listed in the release notes for R1.56 are the same as those for R1.54. IOW, R1.54 is the latest version for XP/2000.

Thanks for the prompt input... and your advice solved it for me

I was trying to "update my Win XP MCE installation".

Well the Realtek 1.56 package release notes are pretty explicit that they are for Win XP too although I appreciate your point that the XP driver is still the same as in 1.54:
"Driver Package R1.56
Realtek HD Audio Driver support all of Realtek HD Audio Codec in Vista/WinXP/Win2000/Win2003 .
1. Vista WHQL Supporting: ... ALC888 ...
2. Windows 2000/XP WHQL Supporting: ...ALC888 ...
3. OS Supporting: Microsoft WindowsXP, Widnows2000, Vista x86/x64"

As suggested I got the Realtek Win XP etc 1.54 package from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow...el=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
and tried that ... and this time completely normal installation success with 5.10.00.5273 => 5.10.00.5345.

With both 5273/5345 the MS Vista Upgrade Advisor says "Realtek High Definition Audio : There is no compatibility data available for this device...." but at least the Realtek website clearly has ongoing Vista driver updates ready.

Sorted for now anyway - I'm sure when I get to Vista there'll be plenty of other issues

THANKS!

UPDATE
Previously before altering my bios settings i had run Orthos GO-SP2004 on both CPU's at the same time for over 5 hrs with no errors , but after using the NEW memory settings one cpu test failed within 15 mins so reset back to default 3-3-3-8 & it seems stable again for well 1 hour at moment, so must depend on your type of Ram

1.55 for WindowsXP 32/64bits; Version 1.56 for Vista 32/64bits:
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/realtek.htm
1.55 contains a driver update for Vista as well as changes to the installer and control panel applet under Vista, but it contains all the same file versions applicable to XP/2000 found in both 1.54 and 1.56.

IOW, R1.54 is the latest version for XP/2000.

sometime last night Windows XP Pro crashed. Swapped back my 2 - 1GB Corsair ValueSelect PC3200 until I can figure out why the Super Talent PC2 800 CL5 caused the crash.

Question:

Do the default bios settings for this board get a computer build to boot and allow stable installation of Windows XP if one sticks to the approved hardware on the AsRock website?
