Idle temp for 3850 was 39-40, after half hour of crysis it got to 77, thats as hot as it got. Windows xp seems fine right now, its most likely the fact that I just cannot update my bios, and then disable pcie downstream pipeline, without my system becoming unbootable for some reason.

Pavelz, do you have to disable pcie downstream for your 3870 to work right? If it works fine for you without doing that then there might be more to this.

try running some more intensive benchmarks such as Crysis, Lost Planet, or some of the other newer games out. 3dMark06 doesn't seem to be a very good benchmark for the newer generation of cards.

Just for anyone's reference / interest:

775DUAL-VSTA motherboard with BIOS 2.9

swapped from AGP video card:
XFX 6600GT 128MB DDR3 DUAL DVI card PV-T43A-NDF6

to a fanless PCI express card :
XFX 7600GT 560M 256MB DDR3 - PV-T73G-U1F4

using the latest XFX site linked nVidia drivers 169.21 winxp32 intl successfully, though did take two installs of the 5.05.47.00 ntune winxp intl application to add the NTune utility.

I did amend the BIOS setting for primary graphics from AGP to PCIx but it was already booting up okay at the time so no idea if it's necessary/advisable.

Love the silence and no known glitches after two days - running at 65-70C.

That's the same temps I had with my fanless Gigabyte 7600GS. I attached a silent 80mm fan to it with twist-ties and the temps dropped down to the 30-40s.

After trying to install a new HD3850 512Meg card ALL Day on this board, and getting nothing but corrupted graphics, even on old games, I decided to read this thread and around the net. Seems that the PCIe 4X slot on this board doesn't play very well with HD3870/3850's. Even the 4core model already has a bios upgrade that adds something for the HD3870/3850. No BIOS for the 775Dual though!

Sadly, I now have to tear this system down and rush install into a P35 board to test the card out before the rebate expires. Darnit!

Edit: Maybe I'll try one more time with the PCIe pipeline turned to disabled to see if it makes a difference.

Edit #2: Boy did it make a difference. Everything is A-OK now!
Found the patch for 3dMark06 and just ran it. 7,780 or so, which isn't bad for a non-overclocked E6300 system with 2GB of 667MHz ram at 5-5-5-15. Not great, but not terribly bad either. The 7600GT in the same system produced 3,350. Nothing on either card was "tweaked" (i.e. run at whatever settings that were default).

OK, I took oldhoss up on his offer of a board, but I'm having trouble locating an I/O shield for it. Can anyone hook a brudda up ? I'm not looking for free either, as oldhoss is receiving payment for a free board, but luckily I have an Asrock Dual already, so this is my second.
But I still need one of those funky shields, so Pm me if you can provide one !

PS - oldhoss had already emailed Asrock and they sent him the wrong shied, so I'm not counting on them to help me out.

Edit: Got a quick reply from Asrock ...

If you like to purchase I/O shield from us,

it will be $5.00/each shipped and please send the check or money order(We don?t accept credit card) to the following address:

ASRock America
13848 Magnolia Ave.
Chino, CA 91710
Attn: Sales Dept.

Please make your check or money order payable to " ASRock America Inc "

We will ship it out by USPS regular mail within a week after receiving your check.
Please also mention what kind the model of the motherboard you have and your shipping address. Thanks.

oldhoss: Have you tried to reset CMOS? What processor - a new one may not be supported by BIOS.

My E4500 was not supported by BIOS on my board, but insistent resetting of BIOS got it going so far that I managed to update bios in DOS.

Yeah, I spent waaay too much time trying to get that POS to post....but no joy (it was a Celery 331, btw.) Mr. WT didn't have any luck either, I reckon. Curses! :|

Edit...the "disgust smiley" is still broken!

Hi, I just bought a couple of DDR2 sticks. Currently using DDR1 on this board.
Should I just turn off the machine, replace the DDR1 sticks with DDR2 or should I change the settings in the BIOS first before changing them?
Thanks for the help

i have one of these 775dual vistas that i have been running with core2 cpu's for the last year.

as best i can tell -- little to no boost to running ddr2 as opposed to ddr-1-400

agp vs pci-e same story--

over-clocking--this mb can hit around 300+fsb with a decent core 2. not bad for a budget MB but very poor compared to a p35.

stability is very good with the conroe series cpu's.

problems-- the only real problem i've had with it is that my sata ports gave out and there are only 2 of them (i think).

bottom line a decent MB, stable and can do a mild oc. would i buy one for a game box? no --get one with a pci-e . the only reason to get this mb is if you have 2 gig of ddr 2 and a very good AGP card all ready. otherwise get a p35.

when comparing the 775 dual vista to my p35s it is pretty well behind the times. my benchmarks with the x1950 and omega drivers on the p35s are about double what they are with the vista-via-880.

if your making a workstation on a budget then it is an ok mb.

The only reason I'm upgrading to DDR2 is because they're way cheap now (from 1GB DDR1 to 2GB DDR2)
I'm doing a step-by-step upgrade
Back to the question.... anybody????

Froodent76, It's best to change the sticks then restart the machine and change bios settings before booting.

I have recently changed mine too and experienced slightly less stability with DDR2 than my old DDR400, I now have a stable config again running the DDR2 at 533 rather than Auto and fiddling with latencies and DRAM voltage.

I completely agree with bigblock above, the system is great for budget use and the 6400 Conroe even with a lowly 15% overclock provides shattering performance when compared with my old 'cooking' Athlon XP system. Once I have a new PCI-X graphics card installed it's gonna be byebye Dual-VSTA, but the ownership experience has frankly been very good indeed.

Edit: Make sure you clean those slots out thoroughly before putting the new sticks in.

Thanks homonculus....
I'll surely do that. I'm also using E6400 on mine but havent overclock anything cos I dont want to sacrifice stability for speed as this is Asrock we're talking about.
I'm planning to upgrade to DFI P35 or X38 as soon as the prices on the G92 settles...
I promised my brother to sell this mobo to him when I finally upgrades.

Thanks again man!

Hello all. I'm wondering if the issues with XP Service Pack 2 and Prescott P4 are resolved on this mobo? Apparently Sp2 would lock up systems on P4 Prescotts (mine is a 2.8ghz) due to some microcode and outdated BIOS. Since this problem appeared when SP2 was released (4 years ago or so), I'm wondering if the BIOS for the 775Dual-VSTA are up to date and I wont have to worry about this. I'm trying to find some uber cheap C2D on ebay but for now I'll have to stick to the P4.

Got my build together last night and was disappointed with my initial OC, but I'm guessing it has more to do with the cheap PSU than the CPU itself. Running an e2180 and I set it for 3.0 with an even 300fsb, but it would hang before getting to the desktop, so I checked and found the Ultra X-Connect was only putting out 11.4v on the +12 rail. I have an identical Ultra 500 X-Connect that runs an AMD 5000 @3.2 with a 7950gx2 card and that thing doesn't drop below 11.8, so it looks like my problem lies on the PSU side of the build.
Anybody running a 2180 @ 3.0 on stock voltage, or should I bump that up and hope the PSU isn't as bad as what I think it is ..

Nope your PSU is a shocker, can't believe you'd even try overclocking with readings that low, can you imagine how inconsistent it is? INVEST! (A good PSU will last you through many systems/upgrades).

Hom, I honestly had such good luck with the other Ultra that this one was just a perfect match for the build. I admit to buying based on looks rather than performance. Have you ever tried to find a modular PSU with silver cables ?? Its damn near impossible, and I guess I will try and find a modular that I can use the Ultra cables but that provides better voltage on the all important +12 rail.
I own an FSP Epsilon 600w and an Enermax 485 Noisetaker, so I don't always buy cheap, but this was one occasion where I was shocked by the results based on the higher end hardware running on an identical PSU. I have an Earthwatts 380 that I could drop in and see what that does ... in the meantime, the OC quest will be shelved due to inadequate hardware.

No experience with E2180, however stable 3Ghz overclock with E4400(and E6700)/4coredual setups always required more than default 1.325 volts ---> typically needed around 1.4v; with 3.2Ghz requiring 1.44-1.46V.

Of course, anyone's max overclock limit will also depend on the "vdroop" of their particular mobo?
