This motherboard just plain no good for overclocking. I don't overclock it at all anymore. I had it up to 300FSB but then I went from an AGP videocard to PCI-E and now it doesn't want to overclock even a little. I've wasted enough time trying to get an overclock out of this board.

Again, this motherboard is solid and great at stock Core 2 Duo speeds and it's very inexpensive which is nice. Overclock it, even a little, and you are asking for heartache. If you want to overclock, look at boards by ASUS and Gigabyte with the P965 Intel chipset because overclocking the 775Dual-VSTA is an exercise in futility.

cpu throttling perhaps?? use a program such as cpu-z to monitor the cpu speed, if its overheating the cpu will throttle back and slow the system down. Just an idea, check it out

well yeah u can`t oc it high but i finally found the right settings to make it stabil in my case and a fsb at 296 with no modding. 300 just makes my pc die and restart in boot guard mode(it`s me psym but i forgot my password for psym x.x).

to help some ppl with the same setup as me then heres a stabil setup on this system :

e6600 2.4 ghz
cellshock 2 gb pc6400 ddr2
Gainward BLISS 7800 GS+ 512mbddr3(mine are oced to 600 on core 1422 on mem)
550 watts PSU with 24 amps on the 12v rail.

for ppl that got a system like me then :

asynced
296 fsb
spread off
speedstep off
pipe DRQ on
AGp high
Vdimm(ram) high
all ram steppings on auto
v-link normal
ide strength normal

for 2.66 ghz with ram stepping 4.3.3.8 2t and ram bandwidth of 5.8 gb/sec

Mr Vain.

Have decided to follow in your footsteps and go for a h/w volt mod. (Thought that by now, Asrock might have enabled a volt mod in the bios, but have given up waiting...)

I am using a D805, and checked the Intel site for the def voltage (shown as 1.25V-1.4V). Armed with this I popped over to your referenced site, but am unsure which pin mod you followed for you D805. Would you be so kind as to point me to the right one. My guess is, it's the one that starts at "1.25 defaulters", but don't wish to get it wrong!

Thanks in advance,

Haricot

Currently OC'ed to a paulty 156*20 (3120) D805 / GEIL 6400-800mhz / AGP / 1xsata/1xDIE/1xDVD.

Voltage (under Max. load) down < 1.20 - That can't be good

I'm starting to agree with you. Although when I moved to a PCI-E card, upping the PCI-E to 117 stabilized my OC back to 299.

The biggest problem is just random reboots. I was playing a flash game and the computer just reboot itself. This is the same computer that can play the newest greatest games for hours and hours and nothing happens. OC'ing just seems to make these boards wonky and there's no rhyme or reason because I played that same flash game later that night and nothing happened.

Considering the price I paid, I have no problem with its performance. However, since I was working on a pretty important document at the time, I realized the $100 I saved on this board would be better spent on a system that at least OC'ed consistently and doesn't lose my data. It's just far too random for my liking and it's going back down to stock speeds soon (and into another system for a family member too).

yeah ived tried that to. I got my fsb to 300 with some tweaking and ran with 2700 fine fore like 6 days playing games while dling and winamp in the background and i pumped fps at high speeds. Then i go back into firefox and bam restart and now it wont go over 295 lol. Can`t wait to get my 680i but yeah fair enough oc vs the money cost.

I am sick and tired of the USB not working at all. I have just bought a Sony Ericsson 810i mobile phone, and I cannot make put music into it because it is not being recognized by the USB....not in the front nor the back of the computer

I cannot understand why so few of you people have problems with USB. In the danish forum, there are so many like me with USB problems. Maybe there is a reason that this motherboard is so cheap. For me there seems to be a pattern between cheap price and defect or instable USB.

The support suggested:
Dear Sir,

Please try the latest BIOS first:

http://www.asrock.com/support/download.asp?Model=775Dual-VSTA#bios

regarding to the USB problems, please try:

Please try to set your PS2_USB_PWR1 jumper to +5V.

And please try the usb ports on the rear panel

Thanks for the email.

Yours truly,

ASRock

I have downloaded the new bios and finally I got rid of all the random freezed which were a catastrohy for me as a regular online poker player, and it has cost me many pots

I tried moving the jumper like they told me, but it just made the USB very unstable and it started reloading again and again the few USB devices that had worked before....

So now I dont know if to deliver back this motherboard to where I bought it and get one with a working USB function (most important of all things since everything is run by USB these days)

I just wish that someone in here had an advice for me. I have Windows Media Center with all updates and service pack 2, so it just should work, which it doesnt.....

Hey guys!

I just recently bought a Palit 7600GS Sonic PCIe to put with this board. For some reason, it wont POST at all. I use to have a 6600 Vanilla AGP and never had problems with that. Can someone help me out? Is there something I'm supposed to switch when going to PCIe from AGP?

I tried clearing the cmos to no avail. Still wont POST! HELP please! Bios Version is 1.9.

My system specs:

e6300
775dual-vsta
Hec 550watts winpower PSU
1GB DDR Ram

Any ideas guys? It seems to be getting enough power since the fan spins.

Thanks!

Hi All..first post..

I bought this Mobo in the UK in October.
Previously had a P4 3.2 Prescott on a Gigabyte 2004GT 478 Mobo so wanted to keep some components...

My new Spec:

775Dual-Vsta Bios 2.10 ( shipped with 1.4)
XPHome (genuine)
E6400 @ 2.4Ghz FSB 298
1GB (2x512) Corsair XMS DDR3200 (silver heatspreaders one)
Connect3D X800 Pro 256 DDR3
Casecom 500W PSU
Samsung 80GB HDD
DVDRW
CDRW
Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Digital PCI

never had one problem...at all
plays everything...never freezes...nothing..get 400FPS online in Raven Shield..155FPS in F.E.A.R..

Only mods I made were Async for AGP / PCI-E and upped the FSB

fast as hell for a 200 GBP upgrade..

hope this helps

Brilliant Mobo for me..hope this helps

Hi Guys,

I built my first computer ever this weekend. These are the parts:
Asrock Dual 775 VSTA
Intel Dual Core 6600
Saphire Raedeon X800XL AGP Video Card
2*1G PC3200 DDR1 RAM
1 74G 8mb Cache Raptor HD
1 Liteon DVD/CD Combo
1 Other CD rom I don't know the name of right now.
Antec Sonata II Case w/ 450W Power Supply

I read through this entire thread and don't understand much of what you guys are doing so I pains-takingly went into my BIOS and wrote on paper the whole list. I'm hoping you guys could give me some settings to overclock my computer. In my doing all this work all you would have to do is copy and paste the list in a PM you could send to me (as I don't want to flog this thread with one long post after another due to my list) with proper settings. Or you could just write a small post telling me what you would do. Anything that would help. Anyway, here it goes. I hope I am not pissing anyone off by doing this and I hope some other people will benifit from the work I did today.

I have two other questions. First of all...My Ram says it's Samsung PC3200 DDR400 memory. Why does the bios say it is running at 333Mhz?

Lastly, there are a group of wires that go to my motherboard from the case. They are the Pwr LED, the HHD LED, the Pwr SW, RS SW, and Speaker. The speaker is working, so is the power switch and the RS Switch. The HDD LED is not working and the PWR LED is not working as there doesn't seem to be any pins to connect that connector to. There seems to be a group of 9 pins at the bottom right of the mobo. The top row has 4 and the bottom 5. Seems the writing indicates the top two on the left are for the PWR LED but my power LED connector is 3 wide and the wires are on the outside two slots so the connector doesn't fit there because the top 2 on the right are for the pwr SW which i have connected and are working. The bottom row of 5; the left 2 indicates that's where my HDD LED is supposed to be plugged...but when I plug it there nothing happens. Then the Reset SW looks to be the bottom right but there are 3 pins and my connector only is made for 2 slots. So I don't get it. Maybe someone else has a Sonata II case here and can help me out.

heffty...
Can't help you with the "hi-tech" stuff...leave that for Xspurts...but maybe I can with the case.

First you need to orient yourself so that you are looking at the system panel header the same way as it shows in the picture on pg 19 of the manual. Header should be in bottom, right corner of the MOBO and the "missing" pin in the top right position of the header.

Both the "missing" pin and the pin marked "dummy" (hey, they called it that-NOT me<g>) will NOT be used.

Next, your suspicions were correct, the three pin connector marked "Power LED" won't work as is....you need to move the green wire from the end position to the center position. Carefully depress the little copper tab with the point of a knife so that it can slide back under the bakelite and pull the wire out the back. Reinsert it in the center position.

Replace each of the connectors starting with the one marked "reset switch" on the two bottom pins to the left of the "dummy".
Next the HDLED on the next two bottom pins.
Next the Power Switch on the two top right pins, and finally,
The Power LED you modified with the two holes containing wires on the two top left pins.

Before you start, note the wire colors of each connector. Make a little diagram with each color and each pin. Those that are functioning properly should go back with the same orientation.
Once everything is back together with the proper plugs on each set of pins, should one not function (ie HDDLED or PWRLED) reverse the polarity, restart and that should do it.

Finally...while the PWRLED should be on full time when the box is running, remember that the HDDLED will not be. It should "flash" or "blink" only when the HDD is being accessed so be sure that it is when checking the light.

OMG! Dude, turn down the PCI-E speed if you are using a PCI-E card!

Google this if you don't believe me... running a PCI-E at over 110 is a good way to fry your videocard. I don't know why this wasn't mentioned earlier in this thread but I suppose it's because most guys using this mobo are still running AGP so PCI-E settings, while helpful for overclocking AGP cards, are damaging to PCI-E cards.

I wondered about this when I got my PCI-E card and so I looked this stuff up.

A few, and I mean a very few, FSB settings on your ASRock board are not worth frying your videocard over. I sure hope you read this.

You first need to use the CPU rightmark program to find your default voltage before you can proceed.
Download it from here http://cpu.rightmark.org//download/rmclock_215_bin.exe

Let me know what it says in the STARTUP column, as that will be your default voltage.

LasseB there is a new BIOS (2.40) at ASRock which purports to fix some USB issues...

Try it and tell us if it helps.

Heffty try this:

Overclock Mode [PCIe: Asynch] *
CPU Frequency (MHz) [295] *
PCIE Requency (MHz) [110] *
Spread Spectrum [Disabled] *
Boot Failure Guard [Enabled]
Max GPUID Value Limit [Disabled]

Try working your way up from 295 FSB to about 317 FSB (where mine craps out) Any joy? Remember that if you overdo it you have bootguard enabled so it will simply reload base settings automatically, no fiddling with CMOS jumpers required!

jdcon, I hear you, is it possible that your Palit 7600 card is DOA, have you tried it in another system?

Hello all, just joined the forum after lurking around for some time

I just flashed to 2.40, and the automatic fan speed control DOSESN'T WORK!
Crap. Whats the meaning of having the option in BIOS if it's disabled anyway?

Is there anyway to force that option on? A driver or something I can install?
Else I will revert to 2.10, and i realy don't want to do that.. 2.40 solved an erratic mouse pointer issue when using torrents on my system.

Edit: Installed Speedfan and it works. Shouldn't be needed, though..

I installed the new BIOS (2.40) and lost the speedstep option. Why Asrock is doing this? Give us a solution (is asrock giving solutions??) and taking or breaking on the other hand (see CPU Quiet Fan function in BIOS 2.20 and now this loss in BIOS 2.40). Be alert

They have disabled this feature on purpose as to increase the fan speed to cool that area down more, probably due to failed boards from overheating.

By removing this feature, your fan will run at max without customers decreasing the fan speed in the bios saving the motherboards, but driving you crazy with noise.

Solutions get a fan less CPU cooler or ear plugs LOL.

As you all probably know, the quiet fan option has been done away with for now by Asrock. I esnt them an email a while back asking if they would put it back in to future BIOS revisions

They stated that "the quiet fan option was deactivated in 2.20 to help the CPU Fan keep other system components cooler."

Don't know how they work that out as my system vents straight through the AC Pro 7 and into the exhaust fan. I should know to.. I tested it with feathers
