memory timing question, folks on this mobo and some new memory i'm getting..

current sticks are 2 x512 corsair xms pro pc4000 ddr. when i got these and put them into system with nothing touched in the bios, it booted fine and has been running fine at default memory timings of 2.5,3,3,6. it's been that way since day one with no issues. the spd timings for these are 3, 4,4,8..

now, i'm changing to ddr2 memory..2 x 1 gig matched sticks of corsair ddr2 5400 i believe it is (667?) with spd timings of 4,4,4,12. given that unlike the above, the spd timings for cas options are only 2, 2.5 and 3..what's expected to happen?

in planning for these, i have put my ram voltage on high..any memory or other settings recommended for best chance at successful bootup? should i just stick with auto? get one stick in then if it boots successfully, add the 2nd? i've been using corsair memory in many computers for a long time and never an issue so i decided to stick with corsair... i've done a lot of reading and didn't get a clear sense of what's the best memory for this board so i decided corsair..if it doesn't work in this board..i'll buy a new one..that simple

thanks for any help you can give

ps..i'm running the 1.8 bios version. i've seen no compelling reason that will help memory timings to run a newer bios in the description for them , anyway

Hi,

Has anyone experienced random freezing / locking up with this board when running Vista?

I installed Vista for a test drive and all was well but approximately 15min after it just froze. I rebooted and after the first freeze occurred it just started happening randomly. Any ideas? I have P2.10 BIOS, should I update to version P2.50?

2x1GB G.SKill NQ PC2-6400

Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 80GB

EDIT: It's not the RAM's fault because when it happened the first time I was using a 1GB kit of Kingston ValueRAM DDR400.

damn..that really sucks...again otherwise, i'd be all over that board..mr. vain, what do you think the chances are that the dual core 775 vsta is going to be flashable to make it a quad core? i would suspect basically impossible given:

a) why would anyone buy a new quad core board if you could flash the bios to make it a quad core.

b) i'm assuming the pro and ultra chipset differences won't make it an option, anyway

question..can i have a regular hd and an sata hd connected at the same time on this mobo? reason i ask is i want to copy the os etc from the current hd to the sata hd i'm getting. any tricks to getting the sata to show up in bios aside from the controller is sata not sata2 so i need to set jumpers for 150 m/sec transfer instead of 300 for the drive to be detected. (that leads to another question..it's probably on the site but whether the quad core board version has sata or sata2 controller)

thanks again for help.

(checked and another disappointment on the quad 4 board as it says sata controller..too bad)

Yes. You can use both. I currently have a 36 gb Raptor (SATA) as my OS drive, and a 250 IDE drive as my data drive. They work together just fine.

Sorry, I am new here.

I also have a 775dual-vsta / D820 / 2x1GB Kingmax DDR2 800MHz.
The problem is the only way to avoid memory crashes is to UNDERCLOCK fsb to 190MHz. I tried all settings for the memory on 533, 667, even 400 (by default when flexibility enabled), most relaxed possible timings, all voltages but nothing changed, it is neither better nor worse. With memtest86 I always get errors in LRAND and ERAND test, much or less the same number.
The board works fine with DDR memory and is stable with moderate overclock (220MHz fsb)
I tried bios 1.9, 2.4, 2.5 - absolutely no change is really 2.1 much better?

Can anyone help?

By the way, for the ones concerned on voltages, my board is not reporting correctly the voltages:
CPU-Z : 11.23V measured (with voltmeter) 12.13V
CPU-Z : 4.87V measured 5.11

This could be on most of the boards, I so lot of posts telling about ~11.2V

re: the voltage measurement issue. yeah, this board i've found through 3 different power supplies is buggy on what it tells you for those. i just got a silverstone 500 watt power supply, plenty for my system config and was alarmed to see the 12 volt at 11.19 (prior ps, an antec 430 watt, was showing 11.47 and i ran it 24/7 since june in my htpc system with no problems of any kind..only changed it cause i changed my case and the antec was proprietery to the old case. i recently acquired a digital voltmeter so thought may as well check it out in case i got a lemon of a ps.

reported voltages by board on 12 and 5 are 11.19 and 4.92 (using bios readings, sisoftsandra and hwinfo)

with my digital voltmeter, 11.98-11.99 and a solid 4.99

i'll trust my voltmeter before i trust any software program or motherboard monitoring program

I recently installed 2 x 320GB SATA Seagate HDD's on the Dual-VSTA and there was no need to jumper the drives to the 150 MB/sec setting, BIOS 2.10 detected them both straight out of the box.

thanks for the info, orbiter..i'll keep that in mind if it isn't detected on my 1.80 version of bios which i'm quite happy with. i'm assuming they are running in sata not sata2 mode? correct?

Mine are both SATA 2 drives but on the Dual-VSTA mobo the drives will only work at the supported SATA 1 speed 1.5Gb/s. If you have problems with drive detection I know Seagate suggest that the jumper on the drive be changed from 3.0Gb/s (SATA 2) to 1.5Gb/s (SATA 1) Other drives manufatures my auto detect the correct speed (Check with the manufacturer if your not sure!)
I didn't even check mine though, I just bunged them in and they worked I didn't want a RAID formation either so that makes things easier too

Has anyone successfully used an x1950Pro or x1950XT PCI-express with the 775dual-VSTA? I know the supported VGA list is available, but it only lists GeCube cards for the x1950, and I don't know if they actually test all manufacturers, like HIS, Sapphire, or Jetway?

Just curious. I would really like to replace my x850xt pe with a 1950xt, but I would like verification that it will work before purcahasing.

Any thoughts?

A friend of mine has a Powercolor X1950Pro working just fine with his 775Dual-VSTA.

Do happen to know if he has an AGP card or a PCI-Express card? If it is PCIE, that is very good news. Thank you.

Great. Well, I guess I will be safe making this purchase. Now I just need to find a realiable, strong enough power supply to drive it.

hey guys, i recently got a 805/asrock775dual-vsta combo to reuse my old AGP and DDR1

so here is the system:
pentium d805
asrock 775dual-vsta (bios 2.50)
2x512 DDR500 pc4000 kingmax hardcore ram
6800 agp
antec sp-500
tt big typhoon cooling
2x250gb ata hd
2x250gb sata hd

i've tried overclocking the CPU, but cant seem to get it past 3.0ghz
unstable at 3.1ghz - othros error almost immediately
3.2ghz - no post

i've ran rightmark CPU, or whatever its called, and found my CPU to be native to 1.375v, which is probably one of the worser chips, and the board does tend to droop the vcore from 1.35 to 1.275 when under load (so speedfan shows)

so i performed the voltage mod to raise it to 1.6v, which is quite successful, getting 1.575v. (speedfan and cpuz) however, my OC capability stays unchanged, i still get stuck at 3.0ghz

anyways, i am using 2.50 bios, maybe its a bios version or are there some secret bios settings that severely handicap my OC? thanks

is there any change in incompactibility with the new 8800gts 320 or its the same with old 8800 series?

Since neither the board nor chipset is the cause of the incompatibility, I doubt there would be any change. These GPUs won't work on PCI Express slots that operate @ 8x or 4x lanes, apparently.
