Something to consider, when I reinstalled XP, I decided not to use VIA's hyperion driver. I might have used the .INF update,
but that was it. I have been satisfied with the default XP SP2 drivers. Since you are using a PCI-E card, look carefully through
this thread if you have not already done so. Someone else had similiar problems and change a couple of Bios settings to
correct the problem. If I run across it, I will be happy to post it.

Just updated to 2.7 (from 2.4 which I took last Dec), so far so good.

Just a note of what BIOS settings I had to change to get back to normal on my setup with 1x SATA drive, AGP card, dual 667 RAM in the hope it'll help someone else ...

1) F2 into CMOS and loaded Optimum settings and restarted

2) F2 into CMOS and changed...
Adv Chipset DRAM from Auto to 33MHz so 533=>677 (long standing 'bug')
Pri Graphics from PCI=>AGP (dont think this is necessary, but logically right)
SATA to NON RAID (this is what causes error displays on startup)
CPU QuietFan Disable=>Enable at default 50
and restarted
3) F2 into CMOS again
Set boot order to HD-SATA1, CD, FD (my preferred anti-virus booting set up)
Change SATA1 to SMART enable (was disabled) as capable
Restarted into Windows

One day I'll get around to sorting out optimum memory settings for my Corsair VS2GBKIT667D2 memory...

PS: ARGH I forgot the stuff about QuietFan having been nobbled by ASRock at some stage didn't I. At least I think my PC's louder than it was. BIOS Reports 44C CPU (it has been on for last 36hrs or so) and Fan 2400ish (stock Intel E6300 cooler). Guess I have to wait for a kind person to do 2.7A ? PPS: Found my note - fan was 2050ish with 1.9 and 2.4 BIOSes.

PPPS: AS Rock replied to email asking about QuietFan promptly asking me to set temp to 65C. Not sure how that'll help as temp c40C as I told them, but going to try.

HI, NEW TO THIS FORUM AND THE 775 DUAL VSTA.

USING IT WITH AN E6300, MY AGP 6800GT AND 1GB DDR400.

VERY HAPPY SO FAR AND HAVE HAD CONFIRMATION FROM ASROCK THAT IT SUPPORTS THE 8800GTS/320 AND 8600GTS WHEN I CAN AFFORD ANOTHER UPGRADE
AND VISTA.

IN THE MEANTIME I AM O'CLOCKING MY 6800GT TO 400 / 1100 AND LOOKING AT
O'CLOCKING MY E6300. NOT OVERCLOCKED A CPU BEFORE SO WHAT
BIOS SETTINGS SHOULD I USE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT??

ANY REPLYS APPRECIATED,
CHEERS!

What do you mean by the adv chipset DRAM setting being a bug?

You can get the full manual readily from ASRock's website
http://www.asrock.com/mb/manual.asp?Model=775Dual-VSTA&s=n

and yes you're in luck - it's that sort of scenario - ie inherited old bits and moving to newer bits progressively that the board's really targeted at.

ie as well as the DDR2 x 2 slots, there are available for alternative use:
"2 x DDR DIMM slots
- Support DDR400/333/266
- Max. capacity: 2GB"

Just the idea that it doesn't detect and run 667 memory at 667 but at 533. Certainly my experience and remember others remarking on it long ago.

If background to your Q is that you think the memory SHOULD be run at 533 for performance reasons then I'm very ready to listen.

I know CPU-Z 1.40 reports the RAM at Fq 320.3MHz 4:5 at 5-5-5-15 2T (ie as per DIMMs timing table for 333MHz) whereas I know the reported max for my memory is 3-3-3-8 at 4:5 with 2.1V fed to it
I just havent got around to any optimising.

Thats basically what I what I did on my last reinstall. I only updated the INF driver for
whatever it is worth. Usually, I can't tell a difference either way, but I had some sort
of conflict when I installed my scanner (the boot sequence would frequently hang), I figured
I would try it without the hyperion drivers.

When i get the board do you guys think I should upgrade to 2.70 bios or which one is prefered the most right now. I know it is not an OCs board, but I hope to get my 6600 to 2.7ish and was curious which bios has had the best success with OCing.

I can't even get my ram to run at 667 speeds at all (meaning once I select it in the bios the comp won't boot...even with super-relaxed timings...

Hello Raikku?:

Sorry to digress from the thread (but if the peeps will allow me a little leeway)...?

------

I recognized you here a while back as a fellow sim-racer (from your input to the thread "Post your 3DMark05 score" over at the RSC "Off Topic Discussion" forum). Your results over there stuck in my head because we two are running very similar AGP cards, and because you had used the solution I was eyeing myself back then--this ASRock 775Dual-VSTA.

I never did build my own version, but I'm now very close to pulling the trigger on a similar new build--ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA, and either a E6600 (much like your own), or perhaps instead using a E4400 (with an eye toward getting a 3GHz overclock out of it).

I wonder if you have any recommendations to offer (either "I'd do this agains" or maybe just regrets) knowing that the primary use of the box would be for sim-racing?

These days I run rFactor almost exclusively, although there is also the vague possibility I might jump into GTR2 as well at some point.

Any reply you have to offer is welcome (and thanks for posting your specs too at both places--it was part of what helped me recognize you here).

Just started to overclock my E6300 on this board. Still have old ddr400 by 1.5gb Crucial
and my AGP 6800gt. How far has anyone nudged the FSB using basic Intel H.S&F ??
am keeping the PCI and PCIe Bus at std settings.
Cheers!

I've not heard good things about the 8500 series, better going 8800?

Well, when i bought 775Dual Vsta, i had this Agp-Gainward already(first used it with my older 754-Asrock mobo) and 2gig of DDR 400.

So i thought to save little money when move from AMD to Intel, i bought 6600 straight away 'cause i knew that with 775Dual i cannot oc it properly, so processor had to be powerful at the start.

And i have been pretty satisfied so far, everything has worked w/out problems.

Along the way i have bought DDR2's and better psu 'cause my plan is to buy little more expensive board and maybe 8800Gts(640mb), i've been looking for Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus, here in Finland it's around 180-205 euros.
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1567&l1=3&l2=11&l3=495

With that, i can finally oc my 6600 and i already have DDR2's to use, of course that PCI-E vga is most expensive part when i upgrade and due my present LCD-Tv purchase, i have to wait 'till i have enough money to upgrade.

But as for sim-racing demands, i think it's quite same as in other genres, more power is always better. People recommend to get as high-end processor as possible 'cause sims usually demands lots of power from cpu(especially when running full grids).

And while i get now ~5600p/06 and >10Kp/05(finally), it seems that new games asks more and more from graphics cards, nowadays if you want use highest settings you better have 8800-level cards.

Hmm, i propably haven't said nothing useful yet, but i think that for budget board 775's are very good, but they have their limitations and if you have money for more expensive board, why not to buy that straight away?

About sims, i try to drive 'em all; rFactor/GTR2/GTL/Burns/RACE etc.(never bought LFS)
