hi ... well i am late to this upgrade ... it was dictated by circumstances [ic7 MB failure]

i got e4300, 2x1GB Corsair XMS PC6400 [at pc5400 speeds], and the ASRock 775 Dual VSTA

rock stable at 2.66G - i haven't yet tried for more - clean install of Win2K ... Flashed to BIOS 2.70 and the latest Hyperion Drivers [the other 'issue' is that intel's TAT now shows low 50s for temps whereas it showed 30s with the 1.40 BIOS]

BUT there is this *annoying* 75 second delay [there is "0075" in the lower right corner of the screen - that doesn't count down] between power on and Windows start up

in all 49 pages of this thread, i haven't seen ANYthing like it ... can i shorten it? .... i don't see anything in BIOS [and have even tried 'optima; defaults' before tweaking]

also ... i am *only* getting 10K in 3DMark05 whereas my old rig - still in sig - got over 9K with an OC'd P4 EE and DDR1

also ... with SiSoft Sandra reporting low pretty low bandwith

what is up with that?

What's your fsb with that o/c? Btw, I've never heard of the 75 second delay either...and my bandwidth is around 55% myself with my DDR2 memory although it was the same with my previous DDR1...

296 ... i haven't tried for any higher ... yet

1:1, CAS3 with pretty tight timings

doing the complete new install of *everything* .. i will post Sandra's scores and other related benches - including CPU-z to make sure everything is OK

EDIT:AHA ... CPU-z tells me it is 4:3 memory
--that would account for that low score in memory bandwith

how do i change it again?

my CPU is in a-synchronous mode and what *worked* was to simply disallow the "flexibility" option

now it's 1:1, CAS 4
[how do i get to Cas 3?]
[i am using PC6400 at PC5400 speeds [667mhz]

and i think i am near the upper limit of my MB in allowing my e4300 to OC ...
-- 'rock solid' at 307 FSB ... 2.763Ghz

CPU temps are in the low 50s with TAT [they *were* hi-30s before i flashed BIOS 1.4 to 2.7 ]
-still reading upper30s in the BIOS at max OC

BUT 3DMark05 is *only* 10132 and '06 is 5172
---i am D/L'ing the latest Sandra ... but the earlier version was also *disappointing* in the bandwith:

frankly i am disappointed ... my same rig with same x1950p/512m AGP with DDR-1/P4 EE got 9300/4300

oh yes ... i should get over 3Ghz ... with a voltage boost and better cooling

but i am just gonna get a "real" PCIe MB ... in time
... when i need to upgrade my AGP x1950p/512M, i will also get a MB

This looks correct to me ... 3DMark05 score is very gpu dependant not cpu dependant hence the similar scores !

And as the 3Dmark06 score it is your gpu that is holding you back not the cpu.
check this link:
http://service.futuremark.com/orb/projectsearch.jsp

and you'll see that most people with your setup score exactly around 5100 points

For those interested i've since upgraded to a Gigabyte P965 - DS3P board and have the following 3Dmark06 scores compared:

System 1:
ASrock 775Vsta Mainboard (PCI-E x4):
cpu: E6300 @ 2.15
gpu: EVGA 8800GTS ACS3 KO Edition stock (590, 1840)

3DMark06:
Total: 7759
SM2.0 Score: 3703
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 3383
CPU Score: 1823

System 2:

Gigabyte P965 DS3P (PCI-E x16):
cpu: E6300 @2.40
gpu: EVGA 8800GTS ACS3 KO Edition stock (590, 1840)

3DMark06:
Total: 9440
SM2.0 Score: 4423
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 4353
CPU Score: 2109

and for those further interested in a 8800series card - this card is sooo cpu dependent at lower resolutions (eg. 12 * 10 and less)

System 3:
Gigabyte P965 DS3P (PCI-E x16):
cpu: E6300 @2.80
gpu: EVGA 8800GTS ACS3 KO Edition stock (590, 1840)

3DMark06:
Total: 10409
SM2.0 Score: 4844
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 4652
CPU Score: 2453

notice the big increases in the graphical subscores themselves (SM2.0 & HDR/SM3.0) !
As you can see you really need 16x Pci-e and an overclocked Core 2 Duo to get the full power out of these cards !!

very nice!
... thanks for the comparison

my system is quite *balanced* .... and perfect for 14x9 gaming ...
--what this cheapie $25 MB allows is me to continue using my x1950p AND also upgrade cheaply to DDR2 and C2D

when i [finally] upgrade my GPU to HD2900xt or GTX, i will get a decent 'real' pciE MB ...
--and it'll be like getting a whole new system
... again

now IF i could only get rid of that 'delay' in bootup

BTW, TAT shows my 'idle' to be low 50sC while my BIOS shows high 30sC
- TAT *changed* when i flashed my BIOS from 1.4 to 2.7 ...

*strangely* with everything maxed in STALKER - under extreme load - it only goes up +3 or +4C - so i guess TAT is reading wrong at idle

These chips do not need extra voltage with this board as it will rarely let you do more that 300FSB+ witch is a chipset limitation not a CPU chip voltage issue. If you want higher FSB you must volt mod the board for Vagp etc.

Very useful actually, Raikku. Thanks for the reply.

I'm still undecided here on my final build (stiill investigating the options), but I'm leaning more and more toward the cheaper E4400.

I don't expect this to be anything but an interim solution for me at this point, but it WILL let me use my 7800GS AGP at something closer to it's full potential...so I suppose I'll want to move up on that basis alone (I'm hamstrung with it right now--it's at AGP 4x).

Thanks again for the reply--very much appreciated (and thanks too, peeps, for the leeway--we now return you to your regularly scheduled program...ASRock 775Dual-VSTA!).

Try unplugging all internal & external USB peripherals. I also have a loooong delay just after POST displays my memory total only when my Griffin Powermate is connected to any of my internal/external USB ports. I don't know why this device does this, but I'm assuming it's drawing too much power from my PSU or something??. It does function correctly when plugged in once Vista has fully booted. Anyone know what's going on with this? My other USB peripherals don't have this problem.

thanks for that suggestion ... i don't think i had any USB plugged in ... just for 'fun' i will disable USB in the BIOS
[and use a regular KB+M to test]

there is actually a "0075" in the Lower right corner ... it doesn't actually count down ... but it IS 75 seconds
... just annoying ...

and i am up to 312FSB with this MB ... 2.81Ghz ... so i will keep trying

the only thing i am 'sure of' is that TAT is reading temps way high since the BIOS flash

When I was using this motherboard, I had the same problem with long boot times. I even had the 0075 message in the bottom right. I determined that it was my Canon printer. The canon printer had a card reader built it and that was causing the bios to stall while trying to determine the device. Shutting the printer off when booting resulting in very fast reboots. Might be worth looking into.

Cross post from the 4Core Thread

I'm going to need some help on this one guys!

Bought a 775Dual-VSTA from the boards and noted some damage around some caps. I put the whole thing together and tested it, no go. Assumed it was due to the damaged caps. Bought a 4Core, inspected thoroughly (no damage) and loaded her up. I had heard that it's a good idea to be sparing with the equipment you load onto a new mobo on first assembly so I installed the following components:

Pentium D 945
Zalman 9500
Thermaltake TR2 420W
Ocz El Gold DDR400 (2x256MB)
Excelstor (cheapo) 40GB drive (my boot drive)
D-Link Wifi card
Gainward 6800GT GS GLH

These are the exact components that I took off of my old system and placed on the new board. I must admit, I did put in just three chassis screws initially (doubt that made a difference). I plugged it all in and lit her up, the fans spooled up, the lights on the Gainward and the wifi card lit up, the hard drive spooled up, and then nothing happened. I swapped in some Corsair XMS DDR400 I also had, and no change. I pulled out the wifi card, nothing. I swapped in an MX4000 vid card, nothing. I unplugged the IDE drive and hooked up a WD 120GB SATA I drive, nothing. I repeated all of the steps but pausing to clear the CMOS, nothing.

The exact scenario is that when I plug the powercord into the powersupply with the switch off and then turn the switch on, the fans spin only sometimes (often after a rest). When I plug in the cord while the switch is in the on position, it pretty much always spools up, but never POSTs. Pressing the PWRBTN does nothing. Switching the machine off (from the PS) while the fans are spinning and then turning it back on means the fans don't spin anymore. This is the exact same problem I had with both the 775Dual and the 4Core. Hooking everything (the whole kit and kaboodle) back up to my old board boots right up.

The only things I haven't tried are a different PS (don't have one to test with) or other RAM (cheaper DDR or DDR2). I have some cheap DDR in another machine I might dig out, and I should receive some DDR2 by FedEx today, so I'll try those. But really, I'm at a loss. I have sifted through a lot of forum topics and found nothing similar. Anyone have any suggestions?

Tno

So I pulled it out of the case, put it on a good nonconductive surface, hooked everything up and ... nothing. Or rather, the same problems as before. I'm really at a loss. The only other thought I have is to check whether the shipped bios supports the d 945 which I should hope it would or whether there's a video card conflict? Anyone use a Gainward with this board? It says not to use 3.3v AGP cards with this mobo, my 6800 isn't such a card is it?

tno

Still looking for some help. Anyone have any ideas?

try using a single stick of RAM then ... only the CPU, HD and GPU ... [MB, PS ]
leave out the WiFi

make sure everything is properly seated

are you sure your HD is OK?

what are the 'beeps'

tno,
Your 6800 vid card is NOT 3.3 v, a check at the manufacturers web site will confirm this.

Timzak,

I've reinstalled, reseated, rearctic silver'd, repositioned, reorganized, rechecked and reviewed my CPU so many times. No pins are bent on the board, nothing looks off and it'll start up as soon as I plop it in my other board.

apoppin,

I haven't tried just one stick of ram I'll try that, but I have reseated everything, I know my HD's are ok (as I said they start right up on my other board an Asus P5P800VM). There are no beeps. It just spins up the fans.

ronach,

I figured it wasn't, but it's the only ohter thing I hadn't made sure of.

thasnk for all the suggestions, keep'em coming though.

Mine does that too (but not 75 seconds) when I have my USB HP Photosmart 7200 printer plugged in. When I disconnect the printer it boots much more quickly. It's probably some USB device.

i figured it out .. in fact it is so bad if i have several USB devices plugged in at the same time, the MB won't power up the first time ... you have to hit reset immediately after the power switch

and unfortunately my KB and mouse are USB ... so i put up with it

this is really *interim* ... until i upgrade my GPU [to probably] HD2900XT or if i can hold out for 2950 ... then i will get a new MB

and *not bad* for $25
