Faster at games and general usage in Windows Vista and eventually Windows 7.

The 775Dual-VSTA doesn't support quad core does it?

The revised E7500 has hardware virtualization baked in and the older one does not?

Oops, no quad core on the 775, for that Asrock brought out my board and then a better, updated version as soon as I got mine

Yes, the new E7500 has VT enabled. Intel actually disabled it on purpose as part of pricing and differentiation. Don't have the linky, but since last post I 2x checked and the newer E7500 will probably require a bios update, so here's hoping pc-treiber will support that soon.

Hey Guys! First post here!

Bought some parts to upgrade my computer... (775Dual-VSTA MB). I got an E7400 and a PNY9800GTX+ PCIe video card. I had BIOS V2.90. Obviously didn't like the E7400.

Upgraded to V3.17a... now the E7400 works great... except the computer locks up anytime during windows booting, or anytime after being on desktop.. could be 10 seconds.. could be 10 minutes. This is a hard lock... still have an image, but moving mouse does nothing. Pressing power button doesn't make it shut down (however holding it down for 5 sec will power it down).

This didn't occur until I installed the drivers for the GeForce9800GTX+ card (and if I go into safe mode it won't lock up on me) so I have to assume it's an incompatibility of the video card.

Anyone know any fixes for this?

Can anyone help? I have a dual core 775 dualVSTA board with Conroe E6300, and I am trying to get it to recognize 2 x 2 GB OCZ gold memory, with the 3.19a bios. Either memory stick is recognised in memory slot 1, nothing is recognised in slot 2 and the coputer will not boot if only slot 2 is used. With both slots occupied only the first slot is "seen" and I get single chanel 2 GB at 266Mhz, although this is PC 800 memory.
What should I do- other than trying to clean the dust out of the memory slot 2- or thow away the board?
Thanks

I am having the same trouble. Just recently reinstalled this board for my kids computer. I really don't think it is the video drivers, I am running an AGP HD2600 Pro card. My theory is the USB or NIC driver. I remember having this trouble before when it was in my main machine, just can't remember the solution!

@bigsnyder

Did you install the VIA chipset drivers before installing the video driver? VIA version 5.17 is not the latest but is the best for this board; later releases are buggy. Clean out the video driver by uninstalling from add/remove, clean NVidia remnants using Driver Sweeper, then reboot and install the VIA drivers. Be sure to tick the AGP driver when doing the install.

Note that MS provides drivers that will recognize the board and usually function, but it's better to use the VIA ones.

Two things come to mind:

1) Seating the memory in slot 2 is very tricky on the Asrock PT880 boards. I have had many boot failures and mem errors from such. Solution is to:

a- install both mem sticks
b- empty the CMOS (remove mobo battery, unplug PSU, turn ON PSU so last drop of energy is drained, turn off PSU, short the CMOS jumpers and wait 5-30 minutes, replace battery, plug in PSU, turn on PSU, boot and set BIOS setting to optimized default, reboot, then modify BIOS setting as appropriate)
c- if not recognized, reseat the memory, and reboot reboot reboot while trying and trying again to seat the memory properly. Make sure to leave a stick in slot one, do not leave empty. IIRC, I usually place the stick so that it will push in both end locking tabs as it goes into the slot, making a nice hard click on both ends. If it does not lock into place by itself (ie I need to manually lock the side tabs), then I have done it wrong and I try again.

2) Set memory type manually to 533Hz, not auto and not 667 in BIOS. This seems to increase memory compatibility.

I did, but it was the latest. I did not get the option to update the AGP driver, so might need to manually install that one. Will try 5.17. Thanks for the suggestion.

The main reason why I was blaming the USB or NIC drivers was that using portable storage devices would almost always guarantee a hard lock. Same trouble with accessing a large transfer from a networked drive. Maybe I need to also look at the IDE drivers. I used the default Windows XP drivers. Does anyone recommend using the VIA IDE drivers instead?

@bigsnyder:

No, you don't have to force the IDE drivers, MS ones are OK. Those would not affect USB drives or network transfers anyway.

BTW, I have a once-every-two-day failure on USB devices with BSOD; goes away when I run cpu and mem at stock speeds.

I am running stock as well. My train of thought was to focus on the IDE drivers instead of the NIC and USB drivers due to the nature of the machine hard locking when doing file transfers from either source. I should have clarified that better. I do want to try your suggestion on the VIA 5.17 drivers. I am on vacation so it will be a few days until I get to mess with it. Thanks for the feedback.

It depends. This board is now very old tech, but you certainly can upgrade cheaply keeping the DDR and 6800U. I had almost exactly that combination myself when I first upgraded to the 4Core version of the board, and it was a glorious upgrade at the time. Like most people here I have progressively upgraded memory and video card (PCIe), and am still not in a hurry to change out the mobo. I would choose the new E7600 (first upgrade the BIOS), since that will support XP compat mode under Win7 (requires VT).

I would recommend getting only 2GB of DDR2, or even keep your DDR1, and go for the E7600. Even under a 64bit OS the board only reports just over 3 GB. You will get better performance with a fast dual core like the E7600.

There is a mobo review including the 775Dual board on Anandtech (search the site). In that or a follow-up IIRC DDR1 gets nearly the same performance as DDR2, so a mem upgrade makes the most sense when you are preparing all the parts for a newer mobo.

Review this topic for E5200 support. As it is the R0 stepping, the bios link in my earlier response will lead you to an update that supports R0. HOWEVER, and this is true for the E7600 as well, you will need to install a processor supported by the bios version already in the board in order to update the bios, so you will need a friend/friendly PC shop who will lend you a cpu (old pentium 4 D, for example), or who will upgrade the bios for you.

In my day, I bought the cheapest CPU first (E6300) and upgraded the bios that way. You might try to find a used Pentium D or E6300, which are really cheap on eBay or similar.

I spent a long time looking for Winflash ver 4.11 to no avail.

Could someone be so kind to provide us a download copy of this so we can try re-flashing?

Thanks

You can find a link for 4.11 listed just below the latest 4.22 here. Latest BIOS for your board here (can use Winflash 4.22 for this one).

Hi people

Could you tell me if the ATI HD 4670 works on this motherboard 775Dual-VSTA? or do I need to install any update to the bios? And about the RAM, I have 2 GB 2x1GB, can I install 512mb more on another slot?

At this moment my version of bios is 3.10 is it ok?

Sorry for my english I'm from Portugal.

Use the latest BIOS for your board here.

No, you can only use 2 DDR1 slots -or- 2 DDR2 slots. You can only increase the memory by buying 2x2GB (DDR2), but you will only see 3.3GB memory under a 64bit OS (some address space has been reserved for AGP support, so no full 4GB on this hybrid board).

Thanks, but the link for Winflash ver 4.11 is broken, that's why I asked for it. I read in this forum and at pctreiber.net that using version 4.22 could kill the 774Dual-VSTA. Do you use 4.22 version to update your bios?

@DeepDarkPassion,

Yes, link seems broken. Don't know about 4.22 on the 775Dual; I have the 4Core for which it does work.

Alternative is to use the flashing tool included in Asrock's last version to do the flashing. Just substitute in the newer bios from treiber.net.

Will a PCI-E 16x card work in a PCI-E 4x slot? cause this motherboard have an 4x slot pci-e, but I would like to buy the ATI HD4670 and I don't know if it will work.

You'll need to update to the latest BIOS in order to install the 4670. Yes, the card will work in the PCIe4x slot, albeit at around a 10% performance penalty.

Read the notes that come with the latest BIOS for card support. If in German, use an online translator.
