Jackson,
I'm assuming that you mean your power supply has one of those connectors with the sliding for pin section on the main 20 pin connector. You have to plug that part into the 4 pin socket on the motherboard. I've forgotten to plug it in when switching my PS before, and it behaved in the same manner (power to drives and fans, but no post.) Pg. 19 of the manual has a small snippet of info on it.

I noticed that the Asrock Dual SataII board doesnt come with a backplate... how do you mount the XP-90 without it?

It doesn't? Mine did. I installed it yesterday.

I was wondering the same thing. My board actually came in today - I just looked and mine doesn't have a backplate either. I've never had first-hand experience with an A64 platform before, so I didn't really realize that they were required and that the board didn't come with one, but I do remember reading something to that effect over on the OCW Forums.

So, assuming that my SI-120 that should be here on Friday doesn't come with a backplate...where do I get one?

Heh? That's his 12V line. You plug the 4-pin 12V line into the square connector. This is totally different from the ATX connector, last I checked... altho I've never had a 24-pin PSU or mobo...

Edit: Jackson, yes you have to plug in the 12V line, otherwise it shouldn't POST...

Hmm, mine didn't come with one either. Although my old Zalman 7000 came with one, now that I look at it. It looks like it will work although it will necessitate removal of that big black plastic thing which holds the stock HSF. I'm getting more confused by the moment.

If your mobo didn't come with a backplate, I imagine you could contact the vendor that sold you the mobo.

Thermalright sells a backplate on their site. A larger computer store could have mounting hardware for sale and might even give you a backplate from a damaged board. I mounted my XP-90 using a backplate I took off another board on which I had mounted a Zalman. And yes, you have to remove the stock retention bracket (see rentonj7's instructions above) to mount either Zalman or Thermalright coolers.

You know, I got a pre-assembled combo from Monarch so it's quite possible they just added it themselves.

FYI- For those that asked before, my XT800PE AGP seems to be working find with this board. 170 Opteron @ 240FSB, 1.375v. Only problem is I'll get a blue-screen during a cold-start. The fact it's rock solid once I get into windows (ran 3dMk 05 just fine) shows it's something else.

Probably a BIOS problem. They need to update it badly. The current bioses for this mobo is glitchy as hell. OC/ing doesn't work well at all.

I'll have to look into that. I did notice the backplate on Thermalright's site, but I don't really think I want to wait for something like that to be shipped since my SI-120 and fan are coming on Friday. There aren't any real computer stores in my college town, so I'll probably have to drive down to Houston (~90 miles) to pick one up there somewhere.

Edit: Just realized that overnight shipping would be about the same price as my gas cost for that round trip, lol...

Sounds like you're running 1.0 BIOS? Should probably update to 1.2 or OCW3.

No, I'm using 1.2. I was using 1.3 and it sucked. 1.2 allows me to at least adjust the settings but it still doesn't work right. 2.

So I won't be able to get over 1.4v for the CPU regardless, unless I do the vMod? In that case I guess I'm stuck at 240FSB.

Mine came shipped with bios 1.2 and had a backplate. Perhaps the more recent shipped boards have the backplate and the newer Bios.

Strange, I ordered my board from Newegg on Friday or so. I can't set it up yet so I don't know for sure if mine came with BIOS 1.2 or not, but I believe there was a tiny sticker on the BIOS chip that said 1.20... (and no backplate came with it)

That's correct, just got mine and there's a sticker on the bios chip that indicates the bios version (1.20), but it DID NOT have a back plate.

I guess I'll have to suck it up and order a backplate with overnight shipping then

Don't really want to wait until next week to get everything set up...

rentonj7,
So you did that and didnt fry you board?
Oh GEE. that part that you slid out and plugged into mobo is not for the 4 prong mobo socket, take it out quickly before you burn down the house.
That has one 12v rail, one 5v, one 3.3v and one ground. What you did was to plug in the 3.3v to the ground socket. one of the ground wire is for one of the 12v rail. your mobo has probably gone thru. a slow death, and it wont take long before you start smelling odor coming out of your box.
THE PSU HAS A SAPARATE 4 PRONG PLUG THAT IS 2 12v AND 2 GORUNDS. THIS IS THE ONE TO PLUG IN TO THE MOBO, not what you said above. 12v rail is yellow, ground is black, 5v is red, 3.3v is orange. REMEMBER THOSE COLORS.

Ummm... Pardon my ignorance, but what's a backplate? Is that what the HSFs clip onto, around the CPU socket?

No its the plate that you put on the back of your computer case where you have your connections PS2 Mouse/Keyboard, Printer Port, Network, USB, Ect...

this might be a "well...duh" question, but will a 4x AGP card (ati 8500 dv) work with this board?

He is talking about the plate that is on the backside of motherboard, right behind the cpu.
it is a reinforcing holow plate for heatsinks. some heatsinks are heavy aand must apply a lot presure to have maximum contact w/ cpu, so you have to uses a plate behind the cpu on back side of mobo to reinforce the PCB(mobo) so it wont break.

some believe:
backplate is a plate that comes w/ motherboard to put behind your back so you dont get back ache sitting playing games on your pc.
back plate is a plate for when you send back the mobo for replacement. you put the mobo on top of it and send it back.

That's what I thought, but I was confused as to how that affected a CPU heatsink (isn't that what the XP-90 is?)

Thanks.

Hahaha, thanks! That's more in line with what I was picturing.
