I noticed that the Asrock Dual SataII board doesnt come with a backplate...

Ummm... Pardon my ignorance, but what's a backplate? Is that what the HSFs clip onto, around the CPU socket?

No its the plate that you put on the back of your computer case where you have your connections PS2 Mouse/Keyboard, Printer Port, Network, USB, Ect...

The "backplate" is more commonly refered to as the "I/O shield", for anyone's knowledge.

My ASRock board came with the I/O shield, so I'm not sure who's saying it doesn't, I bought my board from eWiz.

it is a reinforcing holow plate for heatsinks. some heatsinks are heavy aand must apply a lot presure to have maximum contact w/ cpu, so you have to uses a plate behind the cpu on back side of mobo to reinforce the PCB(mobo) so it wont break.

I think some people are using the same term to refer to two completely separate things (I'm not sure which is correct either). My board (and everyone else's, I would assume) did indeed come with the I/O shield, but it did not come with the backplate that's apparently needed to reinforce the installation of large heatsinks (something like this).

Well, it seems the best I can do with my board and 170 Opteron is 240FSB @ 1.4v. Memory is stuck at 166FSB in the 1.20 bios, because if I set at 200 it locks. But strangely enough CPU-Z shows it as 200 so I'm doing OK.

I guess until I decide to replace my 800XTPE this will have to do (unless I decide to do a voltmod). Still pretty good overall. Rock solid in XP64 (as long as I can make it there without blue screening )

Hi, I just bought this mobo and now am looking for a Zalman that will work well with it. I am interested in buying the 7700, but have yet to read any post stating that it will fit on the mobo. A few have said that the 7000 will, so should I just buy the latter instead? The 7700 is only $5 more. The Big Typhoon is also a consideration. TIA.

Is anyone else going to produce a board with this chipset? I had wanted to use the ASRock untill I found out the SATA raid controller sucks. But it looks like the only other option is an NF3.

IIRC the AT review mentioned some others who were going to make boards, but that's the last I heard about it.

Don't use RAID and really haven't looked into it, but where did you hear the controlller sucks?

Disclaimer: I know the following question is probably borderline stupid, but I'm still used to Athlon XP platforms so go easy on me

My SI-120 came in tonight, so I have everything except for that stupid little backplate (which should be here on Monday). I was hoping to set up the new parts over the weekend. I realize, from what I've been reading, that the backplate seems to be necessary for mounting the heatsink in that it holds the bracket more securely to the board (or something like that). Would it be at all possible to temporarily set up the heatsink and retention bracket without the backplate if the motherboard were oriented horizontally (not vertically as it would be in a case setup)? Or would this not work at all for reasons I'm not yet familiar with?

Well I have to say that this mobo is the sorriest piece of junk that's ever made it into my case.

I don't think I have ever in my life had soo much trouble trying to get this mobo to work, even after an RMA it's still utter junk.

I've lost count of the amount of corrupted OS' I've installed, and "windows has recovered from a serious error" messages!!!

The amount of times I've had to reset the system, change settings in the bios just to get it to post.

What's really worse is that no PC3200 memory I have will work in this board whatsoever without blue screening constantly and rebooting my pc.

Kingston Hyper X, Corsair XMS & Mushkin Enhanced all will not work even though they are all rated @ Cas 2. Not even Cas3 will work @ PC3200(200mhz) and I can only get to the desktop with memory set to Auto running PC2700.

It's shame as the idea of agp & pci-e is a great idea, just a shame they totally screwed up the memory management of this board.

Interesting to see someone else with problems with the memory... Sorry it had to happen to you man. I am convinced the AGP problem when you have AGP read and AGP write enabled is due to the memory controller.

Yeah, I'm having similar problems with mine. You have to go with 1.20 bios and manually set the memory to 200FSB. I'm using CH-5 RAM too. I can't overclock stably very much.

Apparently my memory is only good to 220FSB, which I guess will have to do untill I decide to upgrade to dump my AGP 800XTPE to a PCI-E architecture.

Try CH-5. I will keep you updated as to the stability of my system. I was running it at 240 with the 266 setting, but I think it's more stable at 220 at the 400FSB.

Well I set mine up and went into the BIOS a few times to change settings. Before I could actually install the OS I'm getting the 9 long beeps : ROM BIOS checksum failure?!? Wow. I think this mobo is going back.

Do the two fast beeps before the 9 long ones mean anything? Don't think I'm too familiar with AMI BIOSes

The only time I have had the rom checksum failure was when I forgot to clear cmos after flashing a new bios, when did it happen with you?

Didn't flash to a new BIOS, and I have tried clearing CMOS. Same thing. I even tried unplugging everything except RAM and videocard, got the same thing. Took out the RAM and it game a different error, so at least it's getting that far.

This all started when I was fiddling with getting my floppy drive cable in the right way...

PS You may be thinking of a CMOS checksum error, but 9 beeps is actually the BIOS checksum (if this is indeed the error I'm getting), which would definitely mean - dead mobo.

Eh... Can I run 3 sticks on this mobo? Right now it doesn't seem to want to.
I have 1.5gb in it and it recognizes all 3 but it tells me that I only have 1gb.

Help, please?

You may have to manually set it to single-channel in the BIOS.

I don't seem to have the option to set it to Single Channel but it says it's in Single Channel mode.

Mm, so does anybody know what I should do?

I don't have the option to choose between Single or Double channel through the Bios and running with 3 sticks of 512, it tells me I have 1g of ram even though it recognizes that I have 3 x 512 in the Bios.

Suggestions, anyone? I'm willing to try anything at least once.

I just remembered what another person was told to do when he had a similar problem to yours, he took out the battery and it fixed his problem. I am not sure if it will fix your problem but it's worth a try.

Try one stick at a time and run memtest on each of them. edit, also boot into windows with one 512 stick at a time. Also make sure you try each memory slot one at a time.

That's totally based on what slots you put your DIMMs in.
