What are the chances my A300W will support the 5300g? I love the form factor of this thing and don't feel that 2200g > 3400g upgrade is justified at this point. The 2200g is starting to feel a little long in the tooth for entry level (720p) gaming.

Am I SOL? You'd think that since the board is "chipsetless" it should support any APU <65W on AM4. This thread on SFF.net implies Renoir is possible with a custom BIOS but Cezzane?

I'm aware that the 5300g isn't officially released yet.

Whoops. Thanks for that. Yup, not supported. Looks like I go 3400G or sell it and grab the X300.
You should be a mad lad and try it anyways. I would make certain I have the latest AMD all-in-one drivers. Install the last bios release, wouldn't even worry about the special beta version. Unplug it, pop the CMOS battery and wait a couple of minutes. Put in the 5 series APU, try to boot. Worse thing that happens is no post. Try teh beta bios, and if it still does not boot, you sell the W buy the X.

ASRock states not to use certain CPUs if you update a bios beyond a certain point on a 3 series chipset AM4 board. I have done it anyways, and it worked flawlessly, even with long gaming sessions. If the risk reward ratio is no too out of whack, I experiment. I don't see a newer AM4 APU nerfing anything a clear CMOS plus short wait, won't fix.

Right now, the 3400G is overpriced. Unless you know where to get a good deal, time to move to the 5 series. A quick look around has the 5600g only $70 more than the 3400G. And it will stomp a mudhole in it for anything CPU heavy.

That said, having used a A300W with a 3400G it is a solid 720p gamer with decent ram. 1080p for tons of older games. It really is amazing what tiny PCs can do now.

The best (any only) price I can find for a 5300G is $280 on eBay. That's a little high for not being sure it will function with my A300. I'm going to sit on the 2200G for now. First world problems.

Stupid Ferengi, selling a 5300g for more than a 5600G retail.

Overclocking the iGPU and ram helps, if you have not already done it.
