Twinspeaker,

I'm running Linux, several 'flavors', on my Z77 extreme 4 board with absolutely no issues. I seem to remember that a newer kernel is the answer to compatibility. Unfortunately, I cannot recall which kernel is the break point (crs or brain-fart).

My earlier posting lists all my settings and other information.

Best regards,

The board does POST insanely fast ... I see the POST screen for less than a second but I still manage to get to the BIOS by spamming the F2 key.

I don't have any optical drives plugged in at the moment .

Also, anyone else having trouble passing POST with a USB 3.0 thumb drive in any USB 3.0 port? It just freezes at the POST screen ... it works on the USB 2.0 ports and on my laptops USB 3.0 ports ...

Still running 1.60 here which they removed from the list after 1.70 came out. Aside from the bclk being .5 higher than what I actually set it to, I've had no problems. Does 1.80 fix that?

I'm still on 1.70, but my bclk was .5 higher ... I put it back to normal with ATXU ... I'll see tonight if 1.8 has the same problem

I got my Extreme4 a few weeks ago at MicroCenter for $90 with a 3570k. I love this motherboard it's been great so far. The funny thing is I never would have considered AsRock a few years ago when they were considered the bargain bin option. Now I think they are a viable option in the enthusiast arena. I have used Asus motherboards, MSI, ECS, Gigabyte and many other brands. This board holds it's own. So far the layout, options, OCing and stability are great.

microcenter email this morning shows this board is now $79.99 with purchase of a 3570k. 10 bux less than i paid a month ago. its tempting to get another and throw it in my other system which is mostly the wife's facebook computer. im sure the power/heat savings over the old Q9450 would be worthwhile.

Loaded 1.80. The bclk is no longer 0.5 higher. There are settings for the Internet flash allowing you to tell it to use dhcp and where to download from. I think that's new since 1.60. Internet flash has never worked for me, maybe it will now? Under the voltage settings, power saver setting is disabled by default. Previously it was enabled by default. That's all I noticed that changed.

What's working better exactly? I can't tell any difference ...

i think its working more stable and faster.
i dont use v 1.60 and others, only 1.20 and 1.80 but 1.8 is really that different in performance

x264 HD 4.0 benchmark results. ( before bios update it was 5-10 fps lower)

Results for x264.exe r1913

Anyone else having this issue? I am using the 1.8 bios, and I have an intel SSD 520 as my primary drive plugging in to SATA3_0. I have an Obsidian 650D and the external SATA cable is plugged into SATA3_A0 (I also tried one of the intel ports and experience the same thing). Whenever I hot plug a SATA HDD, system freezes and eventually BSOD's. When I reset and log into the BIOS, my Intel SSD disappears from drive list. I have to power down and back up to get it back. I should note, it works fine if I plug in a SSD externally, just BSOD's on hard drives.

Well I solved my problem. Turns out something was wrong with the HAL in windows. All kinds of weird things were happening like GPU-Z not being able to report details about my video devices. Long story shorty: A clean install fixed it all.

I had upgraded from a Z68 motherboard and didn't want to reformat windows. So I tried booting up with my existing installation after I replaced the Z68 with the Z77 and to my surprise it made it to the login screen. I naively believe that if I didn't get any BSOD's on bootup, everything should be fine. So I installed the new drivers required for Z77 and started using the system. That's when the weirdness started. So, if you change your mobo, always reformat.

I am not a smart man... BUT what is the 12" cord with a male USB connection at the end protruding out the back of motherboard all about?
It is not shown or listed in my manual, err 2 Setup Guides.
Manual?? Oh. 79 pages! Gotta download that baby.
Stand by.

3. Add "No-K OC" function.

Wonder what this is supposed to mean exactly? Non K skus can unlock via Bios? Wouldn't that be a breakthrough.

I really have to hand it to Asrock, they are on top of their bios updates!

Hmm, I have to look into this.

I've been on the fence about buying a new CPU since my i5-2300/z77 combo is more than adequate for gaming. I still want an unlocked 2500K or 3570K, though.

If this is a legit OC, then it may hold me over until Haswell.

Edit: Ok, ran into a little problem with the Instant Flash utility. I enter UEFI and when I click on Instant Flash the whole system locks up. I tried it with the FAT32 flash drive in and out. Freezes both ways. At this point, I'm just going to use the Windows installation method.

Anybody see this before? This board has been 100% stable for me since May. I've been very happy with it.

I'm currently on BIOS 1.20. I haven't had any need to update it before, so I haven't.

See pic:
