Why do you feel he's "working for Russian interests" rather than their interests simply aligning? It's well known that Assange hated Hillary. It's far more likely he that if got material from Russia he published it in spite of it being from them rather than because they directed him to do so. He's on record in interviews as saying the following:

“Trump is a completely unpredictable phenomenon. You can’t predict what he would do in office. Hillary was overriding the Pentagon’s reluctance to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi. ... She has a long history of being a liberal war hawk, and we presume that she’s going to proceed.”

“Hillary Clinton is receiving constant updates about my personal situation; she has pushed for the prosecution of WikiLeaks. We do see her as more of a problem for freedom of the press generally.”

1) Wikileaks' reaction to the Panama Papers is a pretty strong indication Wikileaks is working for Russian interests.
2) The fact that Russia's propaganda arm employed Assange for years also kind of points in that direction.
3) The fact that Wikileaks basically never publishes any documents on Russian corruption despite it being one of the most corrupt states on Earth indicates that Wikileaks has chosen not to anger Russia.

Care to tell me when, in all the now 15 year history of Wikileaks, it has ever published anything detrimental to Putin or Russia? They've certainly had opportunities. Example:

https://foreignpolicy.com/2017/08/1...-government-during-u-s-presidential-campaign/

I should say Assange, rather, not Wikileaks. Wikileaks staff was apparently not happy with Assange refusing to publish damaging information on the Kremlin. It was Assange's call.

Assange also criticized the news organization which released the Panama papers because, he claims, they released only the portion of it which was damaging to Putin and Russia.

The man has become a full blown shill for Putin.

Ummmm... ew

https://meaww.com/wikileaks-julian-assange-ecuadorian-embassy-london-smear-poop-walls

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange smeared poop over the walls of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London before he was unceremoniously dragged away from his hideout of 7 years, it has been claimed. The new information was revealed by Ecuador’s Interior Minister after Assange was arrested by British police officers on April 11. Lenin Moreno, the country's President, accused the Australian man of "discourteous and aggressive behavior" as he confirmed that the Wikileaks founder's asylum status has been withdrawn.

What an asshole. I think granting asylum and then revoking it is far more discourteous and aggressive.

Being serious, it is possible he has had a mental decline. Being restricted to a small place without outside contact & always having fear of being arrested must take a toll on a persons mind.

that's what I was thinking. But he was also an extreme narcissistic loon to begin with--so this behavior might actually be tamer than it could have been

I mean, your weirdo cousin that you haven't seen in decades shows up with nowhere to go, you kindly offer support, they end up living on your couch for several years, doing nothing but eating your food, paying no bills or rent, breaking your shit, inviting over street sluts and crackheads....how long before you decide to kick them out for your (and their) benefit? ...or would that just be too discourteous and aggressive?

Haha reminds me of a past homeless discussion here on AT. Guy said anyone with large space should be required to take some homeless people in.
I said why doesn't he take in a homeless guy and let him live in his place without any rules, then check back in and tell us how it went.

Yeah, I mean that would be a great analogy if you added the fact that your weirdo cousin was in the crosshairs of powerful carcereal state for exposing war crimes.

Any thoughts on the dumb analogy, or just shitposting?

Still a good analogy. You are the exception and I suspect it would go differently with another attempt or more simply put if the homeless guy was spreading shit in the walls I’d assume you’d act differently

"You Can't Support Press Freedom Without Supporting Julian Assange"

https://splinternews.com/you-cant-support-press-freedom-without-supporting-julia-1833976432

Referenced in the piece is a statement from the Freedom of the Press Foundation, quoted in part below.

Whether or not you like Assange, the charge against him is a serious press freedom threat and should be vigorously protested by all those who care about the First Amendment.

So if you lived in Amsterdam in the early '40s you would have given up the Jews in your attic to Nazis looking for them if they were spreading shit on the wall?

Smearing feces on walls is something I have personal knowledge of two people with advanced Alzheimer's doing. I directly saw someone do it once. That's how much mental decline it takes for someone to do that. I seriously doubt Assange had that much mental decline as a result of confinement. Far more likely he did it out of spite because they kicked him out.

Julian Assange isn't Anne Frank and the British police aren't the SS.

Somewhere in all this Assange's defenders overlook the idea that he may have crossed the line when he tried to help Manning crack passwords of US govt systems. That's the accusation in a nutshell. None of the rest of it is alleged to be criminal.

Ahh, probably a simple oversight by the ACLU and the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

They have their own principled reasons for defending Assange in general & that's OK by me. I'm not sure how far press freedom extends into conspiring to hack protected systems of any sort.
