As I understand it, in many past cases the journalists have often encouraged the leaker to get more info and conspiracy was not charged.

Still, the SOL has expired.

That’s not what the indictment says - it says Assange agreed to help Manning crack passwords, not that he simply encouraged her to get information.

Making an agreement to illegally access government computer systems is not journalism protected by the first amendment.

I also think this is a bad idea.

I feel Assange himself is irrelevant to the concerns. Bad guy, good guy, doesn't matter. He's not the issue.

I think it a problematic area to have the gov too much involved in deciding who is and who isn't a journalist and therefore protected under the 1st. And I see politics is being used as a metric: "he's a Russian stooge" and "he had a show on RT". I find this troubling.

I generally oppose the USA exerting its jurisdiction beyond our borders. Sure, someone commits a crime here and them flees to another country go get 'em. I can see it somewhat with hacking too. But that's not the charge; it's conspiracy as I understand it.

I've also read that Statute of Limitations for both hacking and conspiracy have long expired and to get around that the USA is using terrorism laws/statutes. I'm not comfortable with that at all.

I come at it from a slightly different angle and that is that I firmly believe that Putins Russia is the Wests number one adversary at this moment, I might even argue that we are in a state of war with Russia right now, and thus, for those who finds themselves collaborating with the enemy, to bring our democracies down, there has got to be consequences. Big consequences.

https://nypost.com/2019/04/14/this-photo-got-julian-assange-kicked-out-of-ecuadorian-embassy/

This is the photo that reportedly got Julian Assange kicked out of the Ecuadorian embassy.

The image shows Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno in a gray t-shirt, smiling as he reclines in a luxury hotel bed with a large platter of lobster. The picture caused uproar in the South American country since it shows the president taking it easy as austerity measures were imposed on his people.

It was part of a trove of damaging documents and photos that Moreno, 66, accused WikiLeaks of leaking.

Can’t say that was too bright of Assange

Why would I turn 180 degrees? If Assange has material on Trump then I do indeed hope he releases it. This isn't a partisan issue it's a good governance and transparency issue.

It's not like Assange was working in the interests of good govt & transparency when he published Russian hacked emails of the DNC & Podesta on behalf of the Trump campaign. Oh, and did so the same day that the pussy grabber tape was made public, too...

What an idiotic thing to say. I'm sure you would willing walk into the jaws of political prosecution by a state that has a track record of torturing those who expose war crimes (Chelsea Manning).
What a pathetic person to hang your hat on.

So in other words the US is not allowed to prosecute Julian Assange for any crimes. If they do elect to prosecute him the US immediately assumes all liability for any actions Assange might take to resist arrest.

How about lol no.

English or Swedish or US Law enforcement do not torture people in the way you are implying.
He could have left...

I mean I agree it sucks but this dude is gonna be in supermax.

Nah. If he's ever convicted Assange will likely end up at Club Fed. Manning did some hard time in the disciplinary barracks at Leavenworth because she was military & because she was a he at the time. The whole gender thing is the only reason she's in admin segregation now. It's the safest place in her current jail.
