Decided I wouldn't risk it on a pre-order given that every Ubisoft port for the last few years has had massive problems when launched on the PC (the Assassin's Creed games especially). I was hoping to see some reviews this morning, but there's still nothing; everyone is focused on the PS4 and Xbone. Any early adopters want to post a review of the performance when they can, so the rest of us know whether the typical Ubisoft port flaws are present or not?
Wish I could say it performs well, but it does not. At least not when you consider the recommended stats for this game vs. what I am running it on.
My setup is as follows:
Intel Core i7 3770K @4.2Ghz (recommended is a core i5 2400s @2.5Ghz)
GTX780Ti (recommended is a gtx 470)
16GB ram (recommended is 4GB)
Windows 7 Ultimate
Latest nvidia driver (released today)
Regardless of what I tweak, I'm seeing ~40FPS-50FPS, which means that most of the time the in game vsync limits to 30FPS - resulting in a bit of a choppy mess. And for the love of me I cannot figure out WHY that is the case. IMO far cry 3 was/is prettier (sometimes drastically so), and lord knows it runs a hell of a lot better. Turning vsync off seems to fix the issue (somewhat), but the tearing is so bad I felt like I had to leave it on. Going to try forcing vsync through the driver tomorrow to see if it helps the situation.
Sidenote - the controls in this round of AC seem especially wonky. I've played all the AC games, and in this one it doesn't feel like I'm controlling a pirate turned assassin. Rather, it feels like I'm controlling a drunken bar wench who has an uncanny desire, nay,
need to grab every goddamn object in sight and try to scale it like blackbeard's main sail.
Seriously, the controls are pretty muddy and can be damn frustrating this go round. Might be tied to the frame rate issues . . . so we'll see if they are sorted out at the same time.
Oh, and don't believe the reviews that say the game tutorial isn't hours long. Its more action packed than the one in AC3, but it still takes a good long time to get through everything. Especially if you get sidetracked doing the open world stuff early on.
All that said, the game is a TON of fun. And some of the models are downright gorgeous. The ship models in particular are jaw dropping. Someone spent an awful lot of time developing them.
Given that I got the game for free with my video card, I'm having a lot of fun with it. But if I had to pay for the game, I would probably be a bit upset.
