I've actually read most of the logs and info doing side quests. There is talk about genetics, though it's buried deep in the pile of stuff found in countless collectibles and the main character's son ties into AC3. The tie in to the series was too subtle, that can't be argued but imo it still worked and if this flaw was the price for making a better game than AC3 so be it.

Yes it is all part of the modern era, and if you do all the computer hacks you will find that they now are able to view memories of other people and not just of your our ancestors (might bet a bit of a minor spoiler)

I've been playing this on the PS4 since Xmas. I know this is PC gaming but seems pointless to make a new thread about it.

I think reviews of this have been unfair; it's really a phenomenal game and reviews have only more or less called it "pretty good", not "great".

I'm only 17 hours in and 30% through on main story--because I've been doing a TON of pirating. The naval combat is superb. The game has a multitude of little silly things that are annoying (such as tips on picking up loot despite having done it a couple hundred times), but overall it's been awesome so far.

The kenway fleet game is pretty damn cool, too. I love this mobile app companion kick some games seems to be on now.

But really, compared to a game like Bioshock INfinite, which got better reviews, this is a far better use of money.

I have don five underwater sections. A best they are very annoying and one in particular with an animus fragment down a tunnel with a current pushing you out of the way is straight up awful. Just not fun Nd has no place in a modern game.

This is just a rant - but thanks for letting me vent.
============
I picked up a 770 over the holidays & it came with AC4 Black Flag Season Pass. So I've just started playing it. I've never played any of the other AC games. I'm 100% new to this.
My small complaint is lack of introduction about some game fundamentals, and a place to practice them. I keep dying and keep getting caught and have to play a section over & over until I figure it out. I realize to some extent that's part of the game, but to a greater extent it's annoying.

My BIG complaint is lack of documentation (and it may just be on the Ubisoft d/l version. I don't know.) There were no guides at all. Not even key bindings. Supposedly, when you get to a section in the game that will require different moves, it shows you the key binding necessary for you to complete these tasks / areas. And that's been good 90% of the time. The other 10%, however, has driven me mad. On the very 1st island, on your way to the 1st Sync point (A concept that isn't documented, either), you have to jump across from a hut structure to an outcropping. Except the game doesn't tell you how to jump across. I spent an hour wandering that whole area, trying to find a different way to climb up or some other clue. It was only while I was crouched there & randomly mashing at keys that my character actually jumped across. And afterwards, when I do the final climb up, it shows the key bindings to jump across. Gee, thanks.

Anyway, I like the game, but to someone new to the universe, game concepts, and controls - it's been a lot of frustration, too.

Has anyone managed to get any community events to show up ever? I'm rounding out the list of things to do in the game, getting near the end of the story, and I have not seen a single opportunity to hunt a white whale, I've not seen a single royal convoy, I've not seen a single community treasure chest; nothing. Is this stuff all dependent on having active people on your friend list? I don't know anyone that plays AC4 on PC so requiring that for specific content seems like a pretty boneheaded maneuver on Ubi's part. In fact, this is a good time for our annual "don't be an idiot" reminder for game developers/publishers:

Dear Game Developers/Publishers: Requiring an online connection or interaction between multiple people online to fulfill requirements of a singleplayer game is one of the stupidest ideas that anyone has ever had. Remember SimCity? It was stupid. Don't be SimCity. Stop requiring "online" nonsense for singleplayer games. I want to hunt Moby Dick and I don't want to wait until "DiskSmasher69" stumbles across one in his game for the opportunity.

So, has anyone tried out Freedom Cry yet? Heard it was pretty good, but as I still need to wrap up the main story, I haven't been tempted to order it just yet.

It feels like a way for Ubisoft to justify always-online DRM schemes; just introduce an economy that rewards players for staying online even though the same effects could be done offline just as easily. And, yeah, honestly, if I have a fleet of ships at my disposal, why not let me actually sail with them and take on a legendary ship or a naval fleet with some backup? Instead of a minigame simulating the naval battles with no user input, why not let me choose the ships I intend to use and then actually let me take control of one and have a legitimate naval battle in 3D ocean space like I can do in the regular game? How great would that be; the Jackdaw is your ship, and that's not going to change, but how about a chance to pilot a Man O War in a big battle? Or even better, have a Man O War on your side to draw fire while you deftly pilot a nimble schooner and take potshots at your enemies while their focus is elsewhere? Awesome. It's a shame they didn't bother to include that; I have to imagine it was for lack of time and not because no one thought how wicked it would be to have even more naval combat.

OK, having played to a certain point in the game where you actually do pilot a different ship than the Jackdaw (for a single mission anyway), I'm renewing my question as to why Kenway's fleet couldn't allow you the opportunity to actually take a turn controlling other ships. Obviously the makings are all in place, it's just a matter of making it so, and I get the feeling they just ran out of time trying to hit a release date. That's disappointing. And speaking of said mission, why did that boat get rear facing cannons (really badass cannons, no less) and I'm stuck with useless fire barrels forever? Hey boys, you know those giant windows in my cabin? Blow 'em out, stuff 'em full of cannons, we're doing this. Granted, I'm already basically unbeatable, but it would be nice to have the option.

This game is truly brilliant and stunning at times, and I'm glad I bought it.

However, I can tell that the engine was designed primarily for consoles by how apparent object and detail pop can be.

I checked the system memory usage, and despite being a very large open World game, it uses under 700MB of RAM, which to me is insane. How in the hell can such a massive game use so little memory?

But then you play the game and you see that the engine is constantly streaming data from the hard drive or SSD. If it had a memory handling algorithm suited for modern PCs and the next gen consoles, it would use a LOT more memory and there would consequently be a lot less object and detail pop in.

I really hope this was revised for the Watch Dogs Disrupt engine. It should be, as that game will be native 64 bit.

Lol, yeah I hated the fire barrels. Rarely used them. But as you said, I was still unbeatable. Loved this game. Just have a few more things to finish up my platinum trophy (PS4). From what I'm reading here it appears to be more easily playable on a console.

Complete jibba jabba.

The game was made to be played with a mouse/keyboard. Okay it wasn't but it plays fine. Nobody uses firebarrels, it's all about the swerve strafe which is basically what keyboard mouse was designed for. (or vice versa but whatever).

I can't imagine playing an AC game with a keyboard/mouse; that seems like an exercise in frustration. Fortunately the Xbox controller works flawlessly on a PC and I haven't had any issues as far as launching or running the game, so I would disagree with the statement that it's "more easily playable" on a console. I'd go with "as easily playable."

ALL fair points.

I think the game overall is absolutely excellent. However, they did rush it for a release date--they admitted as much by the stunning shortcoming in multiplay: no naval combat. This is really beyond shameful. I have no interest in multiplayer but when I saw that the game was more a pirate game than anything else now I thought oh wow I can't wait to see multiplay ships. And yet, no.

And yes I never use fire barrels ever. I would appreciate even a few guns at the rear.

It is too bad there's no way to swap out ships.

It plays very nicely on the PS4 but I was surprised at the popping up items. Walking around towns people come in very late. I hope this is just because it had to cater to last gen consoles.

Yeah I'm sure that's why. Far Cry 3 had the same problem. Both the Far Cry 3 engine and AC IV engine are designed primarily for the memory deficient Xbox 360 and PS3, so they are hyper aggressive when it comes to reducing memory usage, and streaming as much information off the hard drive as possible.

Watch Dogs should be different as it's not only a brand new engine, but it's native 64 bit, so it's obviously geared towards PCs and next gen consoles..

Ewww, I found a naughty bug. Replicated it twice. If on a mission and I create a bunch of darts, that stock of bones is immediately and irrevocably removed from my inventory. However, if I then die before using any of these darts the mission goes to last checkpoint with my original dart count (as expected) but MINUS the bones. I blew through about 18 bones because of this crap.

Also, sometimes the game says crafting or fast travel unavailable but often does not tell why. That is utterly unfuriating.

My biggest issue with the game was playing it with keyboard and mice, luckly I had a usb xbox360 controller and it worked and made the game play much better.

Doppel, I had people showing up last minute in my game too and im on PC.

I feel the game would be better suited for a console and not PC at all. With that said it was good fun after a while.

That sucks. I've also noticed the fast travel thing and can't figure out why I can't fast travel sometimes. Hasn't happened too often though.

I believe you cannot fast travel while swimming, climbing or on a naval side activity. I somehow managed to play the original AC with a KB/M but after playing the second on Xbox find a controller much more comfortable.

Missed a deal on it a few days ago for $29.99 any platform. Darn.

You can get it + splinter cell for ~25 on ebay, people selling the codes from their Nvidia cards. Just search "Nvidia Bundle"

(assuming you want it for PC + it activates via Uplay)

Will 780TI SLI push thes eto 120+ fps maxed @ 1440P? I have yet to install it

No, because the game is locked to 62 FPS max. A 780 TI SLI should run maxed at 1440P at the frame cap of 62 FPS (although you're probably better off running adaptive vsync at half refresh rate to limit it to 60 and prevent tearing), but you probably won't be able to use PhysX (which is basically useless in this game anyway as it only applies to a smoke effect that is not terribly noticeable and kills performance). It's worth noting that FXAA is applied to every antialiasing mode outside of SMAA and TXAA, so most AA options end up making the game look very blurry; some people swear by TXAA, but I think SMAA looks best with the least blurring of textures. All the traditional MSAA modes use FXAA for some stupid reason, so they end up a blurry mess.

There's a guide here that suggests high on everything for a single 780TI, so I think you'll be fine with the same settings on SLI. That guide is handy because it also shows you examples of all the settings so you can immediately see the differences.
