I just built a new computer after not playing games for several years. I'm in the mood for something open world, solo, in ancient history or mythology. I've played all the Elder Scrolls games. Assassin's Creed Origins looks very interesting. I really like the Egyptian theme.

I've never played an Assassin's Creed game. I'm a bit concerned about the controls and third person perspective because I usually play first person with inverted mouse so I tend to feel awkward when playing third person. Is there a way to play in first person? Or, do you suggest that I would be able to get used to the controls without much trouble?

Thanks!

I like Assassin's Creed Origins. I'm currently almost 30 hours into it.

That said, it's nothing like an Elder Scrolls game, and it's third-person only. I play with a controller, so I can't say how the keyboard+mouse controls are. It feels quite natural on a controller.

In case you didn't know (maybe you do and this is what prompted the thread), but you can get it for $12 from the Humble Monthly (as well as a handful of other games to be revealed later): https://www.humblebundle.com/monthly

Oh cool! I didn't realize it was available in the Humble Monthly. Thanks for the tip.

I haven't played anything with a controller since the N64 days. Perhaps I'll give that a try. Thanks again.

I like Origins. It's the first AC game with some light-RPG mechanics--item drops and quality, minor crafting, more of a build-style ability system than you get with the previous ones. Armor is still: upgrade each piece for endemic buffs, whereas Odyssey has an entire gear system with individual, swappable armor pieces and a tier system with their own traits.

I only play these games with gamepads, because they are action-oriented and I think it's just better for those type of games. But it does suck when trying to aim with the analog stick if you want to spend time with a bow--and the bow is very strong in AC Origins. It's kinda central to a lot of the playstyle, actually. In AC Odyssey, it's barely an afterthought. You mostly just equip one for slot stats.

I like Odyssey more than Origins, but Origins is really good.

You might be a bit lost with the storyline and how the present-day/past stuff works (all the assassins in these games are "memories"), but you can also mostly ignore it, because those moments don't happen too often in the game, and are more distracting than anything. Origins and Odyssey don't focus on the present day, real world stuff as often as the earlier games (granted, I only played AC 1 and 2 so far, I think...but now have a copy of remastered AC3 because it came with Odyssey season pass).

Another thought: if you are getting this one first because you think it is the beginning of the storyline, it will still be confusing. ...Odyssey (the latest one) actually does predate Origins in terms of the Assassin's guild or whatever, but there is also the long-going current-day storyline that weaves all of these games together. Origins jumps into another chapter of that, so it would probably be quite confusing trying to make sense of all of that. There are some text files and things you can read in the present-day scenarios to give you some background, but I will find it confusing even though I'm aware of, at least, what was going on in the first 2 games.

I find that the Predator Bow talent that lets you control the arrow in flight really helps with control if you're not good with a joystick. Plus, you can do incredibly dumb things like hit people on the other side of the wall by firing the arrow straight up into the air and redirecting it while on its descent.

I think the bow skills are pretty good in Odyssey, but you have to put a lot of ability points and gear into Hunter damage to make them do any damage. It starts to take away from your stabby, which I find annoying in these games. Well before I had finished the game, I ganked some mercenary for his legendary poisony daggers which, stacked with the poison gear and some traits, have been pretty fun to use. I rarely looked back. With Origins, it is a bit more balanced and doesn't take much out of your build to trait into the bow--I think because there is just a much better baseline damage system with the bow(s) in that game.

In Odyssey, I think my Assassin damage is maybe...3456789 or something ridiculous, compared to warrior, which is maybe 45689...it's a huge difference whatever it is. Hunter is much lower for me. All because of gear, mostly. I realize that this is generally dumb of me because I use mostly warrior skills in mele combat, but I find that traiting into the "Do 25% of assassin damage on x% of mele strikes" is really hilarious if you have super high Assassin damage. That trait has terrible diminishing returns (I think I'm something like 3% of strikes with 9 ability points invested, lol), but it is funny when it procs and your first non-stealth strike against a high-level mercenary hits them for 80% damage. Also hilarious on those world bosses.

Thanks for all the information. I'll give Origins a try. I'll start with Origins since I am particularly interested in the Egyptian theme.

I'll try keyboard&mouse but I'll pickup a controller if I don't like the K&M.

Oh, I haven't really played much of Odyssey just yet. I'm talking about the Predator Bow skills in Origins. If I recall, there are a couple, but the ability to fly the arrow after firing (if you hold down the button) is pretty invaluable.

I'm definitely more used to KB/M, but I did use a controller for like... 98% of Origins. I did find that the Xbox One controller isn't that great because the shoulder buttons felt very stiff, and the right shoulder button is you main attack button. So you end up pressing it a lot -- unless you remap -- and it just never felt good. There was one part in particular where I just put down the controller and used the KB/M. It's this fight against a giant snake thing where you have to use the bow, and I just couldn't do it quickly enough with the controller as there was also a bit of dodging involved.

For both Origins and Odyssey the situation is such that even with top end hardware you cannot run with ultra settings at 4K 60fps.

My compromise given this is a console type game and motion blur can be used is to max out graphics and run at 30fps. Which it does smoothly if you consider 30fps smooth.

They need a switch to a dx12 engine is my understanding.
