Welcome to being 18. By 24 this shouldn't even be a question.

I find that contradicting of geekness.

FWIW I moved out when I was 17 to start college. My parents paid for my undergrad education, however (perhaps because I didn't go around slapping my siblings!).

my younger brother attacked me and pushed me against the wall when I said "I think I saw your gf at school, why was she at my school?" Shes cheated on him before..

His life is his bitch and it showed that day. I didn't hit him back. I insisted that he hit me harder and by the time things got out of control my dad came and stopped it. I wouldn't have hit him back even if he did go ahead and punch me in the face. I would however probably have called the cops to show him a lesson. One night in jail to teach the kid a lesson that at the age of 21 you dont go around trying to fight people, is a good lesson IMO.

Brothers fight. Even when they are older. It's over. He apologized.

I disagree. In this case, he's TEN YEARS (9.52843782 to be exact) older. He should be more of a father figure than a brother. A role model.

Man up.

Why are you still living with your parents at 23? I moved out when I was 18, and although dependent on them financially for school I still had a job that if they decided to stop paying for my college I could easily support myself and get financial aid. In fact that did happen and in the quarter I was getting my financial aid plan together we reconciled and now they're back to paying for it again.

Your parents should've kicked you out a long time ago because by the sound of your attitude you've probably been pissing them off for a while now. I seriously thought you'd just turned 18 when I read this post. You're still bugging your little brother like that? Grow up. I'm the youngest of 4 boys and none of my brothers have done that crap to me in years.. maybe because I'm bigger than them all now but I don't know.

I had just turned 19 when i started college, and I would have gladly moved out if my parents were paying for everything. The problem is that they didn't. For my first 4 years they paid half my tuition which was around 1.2k, and I had to come up with the other half. I dont know what your field of study was, but I know that engineering has been somewhat challenging, and it has been tough to both do well enough to pass classes, and work enough to pay for tuition/books/parking/car payments/insurance/food/registration. Im dont really have any complaints about that though, because when i look back i realize ive made it though relatively easy, granted if my parents were like yours, it would have been even easier.

There is always financial aid. If you're still living with your parents at 23 you should be living by their rules and be very respectful to them because at that stage its like sleeping on your buddy's couch. You wanted to avoid student loans and thats fine, but you still seem to act like you're 18.

There may be nothing special about his case but there is something special about yours.

Yea thats half of it, it generally comes out to be about 2.4k per quarter so about 7.2k per year I go to UC Irvine. Its obviously not the most expensive college ever, but it still costs a decent amount if you are a working some $19/hr job, I only work about 16hr per week because more would interfere too much with my school work.

Well theres 23 years , or 23.5 years rather, of history, but I doubt any would find it interesting if i shared it, also i dont think that it is that relevant.

The only thing that might be of some importance is a description of my youngest brother. (the one i smacked)

He is homeschooled by my mother. The reason for this is that he is very stubborn and has a tough time learning. He failed kindergarden 2 times, and my mom pulled him at the beginning of the third and has been homeschooling him ever since. Hes not retarded or anything and nothing he does or says make me think that hes stupid, but he is immature for his age, and being 14 or 15 is even more stubborn in accepting what others say to him.

At 14 that would put him at about 8th grade, maybe 9th grade level. My mom tells me that he is doing 7th grade stuff. He is very hard to discipline because nothing ever sinks in, and my parents seem to have really laxed up with him, cuz i know they were strict as hell with me. Hell b4 yesterday, my curfew was still 11pm lol. It was always great seeing the look on a girls face when i told her that my parents still required me home by 11pm.

I don't disagree, actually, and I certainly didn't mean that my situation was anything unusual. I just think that living at home at age 23 is inevitably going to create issues, because adulthood just isn't consistent with living with your parents. I don't mean to say you've done anything wrong by staying there, it's just that it's a rare 23-year-old who won't have problems living at home.

Exactly. Oh my god you're 24 and living at home, what a loser!!!

I have a few friends that lived at home after college and they bought nice homes from being able to save a ton of money. They didn't work at walmart, they were engineers. I guess the smart ones are the "independent" ones that move out when their 18, live in some POS apartment with 3 other people, and have 75k worth of loans to pay back. The American mentality is to bury yourself in debt from the age of 18 to prove your independence.

Back to the op. How can your parents throw you out of the house in one night? I guess they would rather you live with your friend's family. Great loving parents you got there.

$19/hr, 16 hr per week, and you're worried about $3600 a year for tuition? What the hell are you spending all that money on? You live at home, so apparantly not rent, utilities and food.

I can't claim I was a starving college student, but when I was in college (graduated 2003) I set aside $2000/year to use as spending money - that's for going to the movies, eating out, shopping at Walmart, trips home, gas, etc. With the amount you make, you should have no trouble covering half of your tuition, whatever car expenses you have, and have plenty left over for spending money.

There is a difference between living at home at 23 and being respectful of your parents house, and living at home at 23 and still getting in fights with your 14 year-old little brother over teasing him like a child. Obviously the OP is not thankful that his parents are nice enough to let him stay in their home an extra 5 and a half years and still acts like a teenager in getting disputes with them over fights him and his brother are having.

I'm sleeping on my mom's couch right now and I am 20 years old. I'm waiting to move to university. I don't lay here all day whining "Moooooooooooooommmmmmm.. make me a saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaandwich!!!" I clean up after myself and try to make it seem as though there is no trace of me being here other than a blanket and pillow in the corner of the room.

How anyone can fault the parents here is beyond me. After 18 years of settling childish sibling disputes they should not have to deal with it this much longer, especially from someone of that age. He needed a reality check and they gave it to him.

I like to spend my money on snowboarding. Im not sure if i wasnt clear, but its actually $7200/year. My parents do not pay for anything anymore. They stopped paying half my tuition after last spring quarter. Im sure if i added all my extraneous expenses such as food, walmart shopping, gas, it might be in the range of 2k. My car insurance is like 1.5k. and car payments are around 3.5k/ year.

i have wanted to move out for a long time, since i was 16, but I also did not want to have to work more, or spend all of my money paying things like rent which you dont really get anything worthwhile out of.

Like somebody mentioned, my plans were to just continue living with my parents, then get enough money for a condo or something, skip the rent thing. Ill see what happens, but thats still my goal.

If I were your parent, I'd stop paying half your tuition too, especially after seeing you blow at least half your money on snowboarding. Your parents enabled your behavior by allowing you to live with them rent free and by paying your tuition, enabling you to blow most of your own money on "fun". I enjoy computer gaming, scuba diving, and pro sporting events... but I can tell you that I haven't spent $7200 on them ALL in the last 5 years, combined. And I make sure the bills are paid first before paying for "playtime". Responsibilities come FIRST.

Welcome to the "real world". Glad you could make it. It's really not that bad, I promise.
