asus 1000HE

I'm thinking about getting a asus 1000he (would run ubuntu generic with adam's kernel). Is this combo powerful enough to play dvds (can mplayer handle store purchased dvds ?). Is the sound ok if you use headphones ?

Has anyone had one long enough to comment on durability ? Also are there any other alternatives I should consider? (I prefer the large screen and long batter life but wouldn't mind something a bit lighter).

Basic usage will be email on travel but an occasional movie while on the plane might be a good usage. Kind of out of date on state of dvd encryption and if anyone has made a client for linux.

dvds? itll handle divx/xvid rips fine. my 1000h stutters with 720p stuff though but i regularly get tv episodes or rip movies to watch on my 1000h

What command do you use to copy a commerical dvd to usb or hd ?

There isn't a command. You'll have to get software to rip the dvd to your desired format.

google to the rescue! youll find that with ubuntu (and linux in general) googling "$problem $distro" will get you what you need. youll come across a few things for "rip dvd ubuntu"

dvd::rip should be one, and its a commonly available program in the ubuntu repo. its not hard to use, but youll want a walkthrough to guide you once, because there are lots of options to play with that you dont have to have.

Ok thanks. Yea I did a half hearted google search and found k9 something or other. It didn't work very well - thought I had installed the app. libraries a few years ago but mplayer cant' read the dvd so I should double check.

Back to the original topic is the asus 1000he the way to go or should I consider something else - such as mac book or nc20. A part of me wanted to go super small but I find the 8/9 inch units to be lacking in keyboard screen space.

There is nothing else to consider really, outside of form factor and battery life. They all have the same specs (atom n270, 160gig hdd, 512/1gig ram).

Personally, I would go with the one that has the best battery life. I think the HE is tops right now cause of the 6 cell.

theres a lot of them that have 6 cell batteries now. if you want the best battery life probably ssd + 6 cell, but then most with ssd cant hold a lot of data
also watching a movie will drain the battery life faster. i had posted this link in the sticky at the top http://netbookreview.darrenyates.com.au/?p=329 as you can see 6 cell is the way to go

I think the only real negative of this model is the size/weight compared to the others. Not sure 3.2lb is taht much worse than 2.4 and none of these are pocketable so not sure the extra size is a huge deal.

The Asus 1000HE also has a N capable mini card. Many do not.
