Yeah I guess it just depends on your needs. I personally love the idea behind this lappy. I already have a pretty good desktop that does everything I need besides pack up and go with me. This would be perfect as all I'd want a laptop for is browsing the net on campus, around other hotspots, etc. Even pretty low-end laptops are way overpowered for this. And IMO the limited SSD space isn't a big issue, as it's pretty easy to set up your main PC to stream media and documents over the net.

From the article:
It was however very quiet and the lack of spinning hard and optical drives made for a near silent experience.

This thing has no moving parts so what WAS making the noise? or is the writer just poor at English and should have written "This laptop was silent."?

Does it have a CPU fan?

If this comes out in August, at this price point, I'm buying one without hesitation.
Use it in the car with a GPS module, use it as a cheap e-book reader...

At the very worst, it will run W2k, or one of the modified XP versions, like TinyXP - I'm in!

i really doubt we will be able to throw windows on it right off the bat, but if it already runs linux i cant imagine it would be impossible to get a winOS on there. if/once that happens, who wouldnt want one of these? the first thing i would do is integrate one for a in-car audio jukebox/internet/gps device. then get one for a garage jukebox and ORB tv player. the question doesnt seem to be if i want one of these, but how many?!

The only thing I don't like about it is the battery life, but at $200 and 2lb, I'm not complaining.

If it actually is something that will come out at that price I will be all over it... there will probably be a lot of people wanting one. I would be curious about the price of the 10" model, if it weren't too much more I would likely sway towards getting one of those.

Maybe the screen has a hum.

"Asus had initially said that the Eee PC would start at $199, but they're thinking now is more like $250 for the 8GB flash drive version and somewhat more for a 16GB version."

Quoted from the link clandren gave.

Yes but the $199 version was only supposed to have a 4gb flash drive, with the upgrade to 8gbs the $250 price is justified.

thats all fine and good but the fact is we were quoting what the article says, and it says the 4gb version will likely be $250 and the 8gb even more.

At 200 its something that I would buy. At 250 I would likely buy it. But these things happen to often announce something at a price. then add features and jack up the price. I mean sure you get more for your money but I want the base cheapo model not the model with all the bells and whistles.

groovy looking but i couldnt tolerate using anything so tiny. i have a 14" T40 that i *love* but id never get anything smaller unless it was a PDA of some sort.

well, probably not. at that price it *would* be tempting.

I don't think it is supposed to push out PDAs. Primarily because you cannot put this into your pocket. But if you were a casual user or someone who just wanted to surf some while waiting for your coffee or class, than this would be perfect. I would also think this is popular for a casual traveler. For example, I just went on a small trip to tahoe and wanted to check email/work while away. To do this, I had to lug my laptop (which is only 5 lbs, but add the bag plus accessories and you get a 10 lbs piece of luggage). I used it three times for a total of 20 minutes. It would have been nice to just toss this into a bag an go. With a 7" inch screen the surfing would be much nicer than a 2" screen on a PDA, which I think would be great.

All in all, I will buy one.

If it's legit, it could be quite the winner.

better in every way, for about half the price. seems a bit too good to be true?!

It is actually not a direct competitor to the Asus for one major reason: portability. People looking at the Eee most likely want the portability of a PDA but with more power and functionality. The $150 laptop does have the power, but at 14" it is twice the size of the small and portable 7" notebook

The 7" figure is only for the screen, the real size of the whole thing will be about 10-11 inches (first post includes dimensions). To me the Eee is nowhere near the portability of PDAs and the medison is comparable.
