ASUS $199 Eee PC laptop

At $199 the Eee was compelling, at $399 YAWN!!!

According to the/a DigiTimes article, we'll see a XP Home edition for $30 more in Dec. At least it's XP and not Vista.

its already out in taiwan and it is pretty good.
fast enough and very cheap for an ultrportable.

besides have you seen the prices on SSDs. that alone makes even the 2G @299 a good deal.

anyone have any idea if these memory specs are sufficient for everyday use (surfing, basic word processing)? I am wondering if I am going to jump in at the $259 price point (256MB RAM) or at $399 (512MB RAM). It might make no difference in the Linux world but I don't know. Of course, a memory upgrade would be fairly cheap and easy, so I'm leaning toward the $259 version. any thoughts?

Not all SSDs are created equal. The ones that Asus is putting into the eeePC are _not_ the nice fancy ones they're putting into most laptops.

my inspiron 1501 that has a 80gb drive and plays f.e.a.r. all day long cost only $550. $400 for between-sized laptop? fuck that. ill stick with my blackberry and real laptop...

This was looking great for $299... but at $399 its horrible. I think the top end model should be $399, it has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. That seems worth $399, but now it will probably be $475 or $499. That is not good.

thats why its so awesome.
yeah for 400 you can get a real laptop.

but can you get a ultra portable for that price. add $1000 to it and maybe you'll find another ultra portable. maybe!!!

ultraportable cost a lot of money. thats what makes this cheap one so awesome.

disclaimer. i am not getting it since it does not meet my need at that price. but no reason to not like it.

I hope EEE ver 2 in April/Summer 2008 would be better.
The ultra ultra portable one will have

Core 2 Solo ULV 1GHz to 1.2GHz (should be dirt cheap by April 2008, same TDP as the current one) or better Core 2 Solo ULV on 45nm process (should be 1.5W less than the Celeron M ULV 353)
945GU @ 133Mhz (host 533Mhz mem DDR2 400) only 5W TDP or better
chipset 945GMS/945GME @ 166/200 MHz 5.5-6W TDP with ICH7-U or ICH7-M
batteries last 6 hrs on the high end one and the ICH7-U/945GU one = 8hrs+
WiMAX/HDSPA/CDMA/GPS optional.
esata port. (ICH7-M has it, ICH7-U don't)
Windows XP customized by nlite , trimmed the fat, or ultra customized patched/h4x3d/optimized ubuntu. also this machine is Vista Aero capable.

hopefully we can decode some SD and DVD-resolution h.264. I don't really care about the SSD hard drive space because it can be easily upgradeable by SDHC, USB 2.0 2.5 external hard drive, etc.
if u want dvd-rw, etc just uses esata port or USB box.

Its a great start - finally a notebook manufacturer realized that people dont want to pay $1000+ for a laptop - they want it small, light and cheap.

Call me when they have one with a touchscreen in tablet form, GPS and a car dock.

Has anyone here actually bought one of these? I'd bet a kernel re-compile would yield much better battery results. Be interesting to see if anyone can run powertop on it and see why it only gets 3.5 hrs battery life -- 5200mAh should get more:
