Asus 290X DirectCU II throttling, loud and temps through the roof?

So I bought 290x from discount and I have it on silent mode(although it's not silent if you ask me). In gaming it takes only like 3-5 minutes temp to jump from 47C idle to 94C load. Fan is at ~2200rpm and the card throttles 960-980MHz during all that time.

So I'm asking, what the hell is going on with this supposedly "quality" "good" aftermarket cooled asus card? As far I know any after marked card shouldn't throttle at all, it supposed to be only reference card problem.

According to reviews, this is not the quitest and not the coolest, but none of the reviews didn't mention throttling.

What's your specs, hardware, case, fan configuration, Temps of system at load etc.

If you want help we need information.

Rosewill blackhawk, x87, 4770k @ 4.5ghz, 16gb 2400 ddr3 ram, 3x fan blowing out, 2x intake.

CPU idle 28C, GPU 47C. CPU load 85C in IBT, 50-60C in gaming.

Funny thing is that the air coming out of my case is cooler with this 290x than it was my 7970 @1.1ghz. As if the cooler is badly mounted?

You might try replacing the thermal paste. Although that still won't make it as good as a properly designed cooler for the GPU.

Wouldn't that void the warranty? The card is still under warranty.

If what I suggested doesn't work, it's your only option short of watercooling it (which would also void your warranty if this does). I don't know Asus's policy though.

ASUS makes bad quality AMD cards. XFX/Sapphire/MSI is the way to go.
It's not bad quality, its just this cooler wasn't designed for the 290x chip to begin with, thus even in optimal conditions, the cooling itself isn't very efficient.

This card does run hot, take it or leave it. Not the best Asus design, I agree.

Won't help much. The only cure, would be to change its HSF.

That is bad quality though.
They slapped on something that wasn't made for it, and while not the worst cooler out there, it just is outclassed by pretty much everyone else.

So, unless the OP got a really good deal on it, they should return it, or, return/sell it, and get a Tri-X or DD instead.

I bought this model used. No issue so far. Note that I choose it because buying used limits what is available (would have preferred MSI Gaming variant) but main point is size. Most custom 290x are to long for my case. The Tri-x is easily 5 cm longer.

The above is true and has been for the last few generations.

The below link is ironic though. It's like paid polling!

Yeah,Asus have a big marketting campaign from long past and it goes into negative direction as well.Bad-mouthing other brand products has been common trait of paid shills.

Won't be surprised if Asus with those designs with r9 290/390 series would have sold more than Tri-Xs of Sapphire.Sure Asus do make lot of excellent, top of the class products but their negative campaigning is repelling.

Okay, so I got friend who has the same card and this is what happened with direct swap-in:

In both games over 10C difference on temps and no throttling with my friends card. Idle temps are 4-5C lower and also the air coming out of my case is noticeably warmer while gaming with my friends card. Room temp was 24C. So I definitely have defect card and already contacted the store for warranty.

Yeah, after seeing the correct results it's probably just thermal paste as suggested, maybe a reseat. This is where personally I'd rather void the warranty, rip the heatsink off and repaste rather than wait for it to go through the replacement process.

Your card is probably defective. I had to go through 3-4 290 Gaming 4Gs before I went for 970 Gaming 4G. 290 and 290X have a high chance of getting defective either out of the box or in a few days/weeks. Don't be surprised if the RMAed one doesn't last long either.
