Asus 5870 coil whine fix

I have never folded on my GPU because i dont like it sitting at toasty 80C, and listening to the deafening vacuum fans 24/7. So now i got my WC setup for good silence/performance ratio.

However my 5870 makes annoying whining sound when running FAH. OCd to 1000/1240 the whine makes my ears bleed, although at stock the card is almost bearable. Temps sit @ 39C under full load for hours when OCd.
On furmark the sound is only very slight buzzing, but on FAH the card just takes off. In games i never hear any whining.

I listened the card with a straw stuck in my ear and i think its this one making the sound:

Has someone ever seen a fix for this? Would suck if my OC was limited by the coils after all that WCing ive done.
I have this stuff laying around:

Why people talk about the "nail polish" fix, and not just use glue?

PS: When new, the card whined when gaming as well if i remember correctly, but this has stopped. I used the stock HSF for a week or two before installing the WC system and couldnt see the coil. Would this go away in FAH as well in time?

Depending on the type of coil, a dab of hot glue also would work, and is much easier to remove should you need to. In fact, hot glue is what most manufacturers will use to "secure" a coil down.

Im not sure hot glue would drip through the tiny hole in the cover shielding the coil inside, if there even is one. Does anyone else have a 5870 whining?

I thought it was the chokes that made the whining noise?

My 4890 whines in F@H too, so I stopped doing it. PPD aren't that good on ATI anyhow. Games can sometimes make it whine, but rarely, and I don't really notice it. But its those little copper coils? And nail polish might fix it?

If you run across a link that shows what to do in this case, i.e. how and where to put the glue/nail polish, please post it here.

I hear this whine on my 4890 and it's starting to rattle my brain.

Thanks-

I always have my case door open, and the 4890 can get pretty annoying at times. Not so much the fan noise but the "eeeeeeeeeee" whenever its processing something as simple as dragging a window. Granted it doesn't always do this, but its been known to break windows on occasion.

If you adjust your mindset and think of it as a feature it helps a lot. I don't know of any other video cards that allow you to make monotone music. Try your hand at Beethoven's fifth: "e e e EEEEE, e e e EEEE, e e e E e e E e e EEEE"

So are the coils rubbing together fast making the noise? maybe try putting some olive oil on it and see if it stops whining.

Olive oil lol. Thats unconductive yes, but how would you remove it incase it doesn't work? If a good solution is presented ill try this

I suggest this only on the thought that the squealing might be due to the coils rubbing together making the noise. Kinda like how break pads squeal.... I may be way off with this but do this as a last resort, hah

I did fix my door hinges this way, it worked phenomenal!

It's got nothing to do with 'rubbing' together. Electric capasitors will reverbrate as a consequence of operating. Sometimes the oscillations will come within the audible spectrum. Then they will cause the shrill sound you are hearing. Glue will lock the capasitors in place and stop the physical oscillations (but in return increase the capacitors temperature). The shrill sound will be very annoying, and is usually a sure sound the capasitor is about to fail, it's just a matter of time.

Yep hot glue is the best solution I think, nail polish is suppose to work too if you drench it in it. I've read the reverbration isn't actually a sign of impending failure just bad harmonics on analog PWM caps/chokes but maybe kyniskos is right.. my mobo has squealed for 3 years though.

The first link also suggests using a straw to your ear to isolate the noise, then use hot glue or nail polish to cover the one(s) making noise. I had an old PSU with most caps covered in the stuff.

The component in question is not an inductor or capacitor, it is a buzzer labeled SPK1000. I suspect something on the card isn't being cooled from either a complete lack of airflow or improper block contact, causing it to think the card's overheating. Or it could be a sign that it doesn't like your power supply very much, defective card, who knows. Maybe try plugging in the original fan and see if it changes?

review mentioning buzzer:

When the card was brand new it used to whine under lower loads as well. Like playing a game, and especially in furmark. I was using the stock HSF then on a cardboard bench set up on my table. It didnt bother me much then, maybe the fan was drowning most of the noise. It was blowing from the end of the card after all.

My PSU is a couple of years old yes, the Corsair HX620. I also got a watt meter to see how much juice the rig is drawing under full load and managed to hit nearly 500W under 7 threads of prime95 i7 @ 4GHz 1.3v and gpu 1.25v 1000/1240 running Fur on the 8th thread. So i guess the PSU is not the problem. At 80% eff i could expect to see well over 700W from the wall socket. Even more if the efficiency was lower.

Also i think the buzzer would make the same sound if the card was overheating, and not vary the noise levels based on card load type. Furmark actually draws more juice compared to FAH, thanks to my watt meter and hardly whines at all.

Going to get a multimeter to test the 12v rail though.
