You can skip to the bottom if you have an ASUS 9600XT, since you probably encountered this, but off we go!

Welp, I'm having driver issues with my ASUS 9600XT. NO drivers installed and the card acting like a "standard VGA" the thing is fine, runs perfectly. If I install the ATI drivers the thing goes black-screen as the Welcome! prompt (the stage after the XP load screen where you log-on). If I actually log in using memorized keystrokes the machine will go and I'll get back video, but I get a critical error the " ATI VPU" saying that my hardware locked up, and the screen goes crazy (more on that later) but the machine is usable (barely). The Omega 2.5 Drivers will reboot into a garbage screen (TONS of red background, looks sorta like artifacting but I know it's not, it's what happens with the ATI drivers after the lock-up) and then BSOD's about 3 minutes identifying one of the ATI sys files as the culprit. between each driver install I completely removed all traces of the old drivers with driver clean (to get rid of any old detonator or old ATI files).

I'm about to do fresh install of XP to hopefully cure all that ails me, but I've been told that the "tweaked" drivers on the ASUS Install CD cure all of this. Can anyone put an iso of the CD up on an FTP or help me out locating the ASUS drivers off of the CD. Apparently the drivers from ASUS's website don't even work right, nor do any of the ATI ones, you need the actual drivers from the physical CD. Anyone have one of these cards that can tell me what I need to do?

And for the record I'm running a VIA chipset with the newest AGP drivers installed (in the correct order with the Vid Card). I wiped off the old Detonator drivers AND the Cat 4.2/Omega 2.5's, I'm running the thing as a "standard VGA adapter." I tried most everything in the BIOS, regarding fast write, cacheing and AGP settings but haven't had any luck. And YES, I know that these cards are a pain, but it was CHEAP.

Thanks in advance!

If you getting a blank screen after booting xp, try going into safe mode. If that works, you likely just have a refresh rate / resolution problem (i.e. it is set too high).

OKietay, so how do I fix that?

It's not really a blank screen per say. The login screen is covered with red veins/splotches of color and the screen briefely shows my desktop before it caves to nothingness.

Again, thanks in advance.

Sorry to say, but you're wrong.
I've sold and installed the Asus 9600XT cards and they do not require special "Tweaked" drivers.
I always download the newest catalyst drivers and install them and no problems.
It sounds to me like you've either got a bad card or problems somewhere else.
And who gave you all this BS about their cards only working with their (asus) drivers?

I have an ATI 9600 Pro Retail and I had a similar problem to yours. I have the card hooked up to the pc through a DVI connection on a 15" Mitsubishi FP. Whenever I boot into windows, after the xp splash screen dissappeared the monitor would go blank and the pc would reboot. My fix was to have both the vga cable and the dvi cable hooked up at the same time while having the dvi selected on my monitor. It would crash with just the dvi hooked giving me some gpu error on reboot. My two friends have the exact same problem. I didn't have this problem till I upgraded my motherboard from an 845pe Intel board to a 865 pe intel board.

Hope this helps.

The ATI drivers don't work at ALL, nor do the Omegas. The ones from ASUS do let me boot and get into windows, but have tons of artifacting unless I turn the Hardware Accleration all the way down to half-way if I'm at 1024x768 or above. I may have a bum card, but I *know* drivers are an issue with this card. I know 2 other people who have the card who did work-arounds, and since I picked the card up for extremely cheap we figured we could find something that worked. We did not. Given that I know 2 people with this card who have issues, I've found someone responding and message boards online are filled with crazy issues regarding this card and it just refusing to work, I'm willing to say that ASUS makes crappy 9600XTs.
