Asus A7M266 possible processors

Hey all,

Just a quick question here...

For the Asus A7M266 MoB the highest processor listed (with a BIOS flash) is

Athlon XP 2100+(Model 6)(Palomino) (BIOS 1007).


Palominos are really hard to find now and run really HOT, so I was wondering has anyone tried to get an

Athlon XP 2100+(Model 8)(Thorougbred) to post on this board (or any Thoroughbred core for that matter).

(it may just be a limitation of the AMD 760 chipset that doesn't allow the board to use the Thoroughbred core).


I know it would be easier to just get a new MoB, but I'm trying to hold down cost and would like to breathe some new life into a system I have.

(thinking the answer already is NO, but just thought I would ask :frown: ).

Hey, I feel your pain. I just (sort of) upgraded my older A7M266 system and am passing it down to my wife. She asked me the same question; not that she needs any real upgrades. She is going from a Duron 900 to an Athlon 1.33, so I dounbt she will need more anytime soon.
At any rate, I did a bit of research but didn't come up with any significant help. I did post this same question on another site that has shown excellent support for AMD boards. I will also check around further. Hopefully someone here will have an answer or perhaps we can get some info from other sites. I will keep you informed as to anything I hear.

Got the info in uber time! Check out this post from another site (not to be mentioned here, of course). At any rate, the bottom line is that you are not as limited as you thought but the "path to enlightenment" might not be as easy as we would have hoped.

I'll look into the threads a bit more when I am home but just from a glance it isn't all that difficult (I'm used to working on a microscopic level on things)...just need to know what wire trick to use for the processor you have.


I'll try this at some point, since the next upgrade won't be for some time (until the Athlon 64FX is released in a verion that supports dual channel non-ecc memory, the MoBs are out for it and the price is a bit down...thinking next summer some time).

Somewhere in that maze of threads I pointed to, there is the explanation of the "wire trick". It isn't too hard so you should have no problem. Good luck. I'm glad I was able to assist. LMK if you do this!
