The A7V is a pretty good board, not my favorite for the KT133 bunch, which is the Abit KT7.

The A7V is a really good board if you dont mind fidling with it. I wouldnt recommend it to a "new user". Of course every board has its problems and the A7V is no exception. Anandtech has a Mobo test somewhere on here and its rated one of the highest. Mine is running strong and I havent had any of the problems people have been posting. Maybe im just one of the lucky ones but I seem to think its a good board. Windows ME on the other hand gets me screaming.

The Asus A7V has worked well for me. It overclocks easily and has done everything it was supposed to. The biggest headache is setting up the ATA 100 with the Promise controller. Also the Asus website needs serious improvement.

If you want the most stable board & are not worried about overclocking, there is only one, MSI K7T PRO .

At this point I could not recommend the A7V. I received one that would not post so be careful.

The majority of people here are those with PROBLEMS so you have to expect a lot more criticism than praise.

I picked the ASUS A7V for my first system to build. I've had more problems with OEM systems than this one. I read the manual to familiarize myself with the board. I then sat down with the board on a table and set all the jumpers and rechecked them before installing the board. Sure the ATA100 setup is goofy but you get over it. You have to install your OS on the IDE port and later move it over - no big deal. Just read and ask questions until you have a good understanding of each board. IMO too many problems are created by people who don't understand, rush in, and screw up then later do a "what happened?" "This board sucks". Get the facts first and take your time. Don't be so fast to blame the board for your mistakes or lack of understanding. Even the seasoned guys screw up so double check yourself. Did you see that 1,000mhz chip they toasted over at [H]ardOCP because they forgot to check the seating of the heatsink?..bummer but it happens even to the best of em.

I like the board very much, but I am a tweaker.

Good to hear *something* nice about the A7V. I have one on order and you guys are scaring me. This will be the first system I'll build so these posts are making me think I bought the wrong board. I do have a couple of experienced friends who can help, though they haven't built AMDs before. I sure hope I can get mine to run! I picked a Duron 650 because of the good price compared to the P3, and I picked the A7V because of Asus's record, now I am not so sure I did the right thing.

As I said I just put one in mine. I had a P3 733 and I had a Friend who wanted a Atlon system so I built this one. Only thing that is weird it likes to throw everything on IRQ 11. It has my Matrox G400 and SBlive and network card on IRQ 11 and all is working fine so far

I like it but I get a weird problem at bootup sometime. When I power it one before sometimes it will not give my monitor any video sync, I get now post error beeps etc. I power down powersupply and reapply power and it works fine. I have tried 2 difference motherboards and 2 different video cards so there is either a bug or maybe it does not like my Muskin PC133 cas2 memory. Anyway other than that I like it, but If I had it to do over again I would get the Abit Kt7

My A7V is running OK now but the setup was a mf'er. Before you buy one read all about it. I'm now running Duron 600@800MHz. Runs a little hot though. No lockups yet.

Go for abit. Abit makes better motherboards all around in my opinion. Im not going to repeat what everyone else said, but Abit does have more PCI slots than asus, which is just an added plus. I have a KA7-100, and I couldnt be happier with its performance.

I just finished building my first AMD based motherboard. At first I was worried because of the various messages I've read on the Asus newsgroup people having problems with the Asus A7V. I've been really happy in the past having owned an Asus T2P4, Asus P2B, P2BF and P3BF. All these boards were extremely stable even when overclocked. I've also owned various other brands: Abit, Supermicro, Tyan, Intel, and Aopen. I always rate Asus to be better . So I took the plunged, got the A7V. Installed Win2K bracing for the worse. To my surprise, setup was easy as long as a) update bios to 1004A b) when running Win2K, have the Promise Ultra100 off the Asus site handy as you need to install it so that if you have any devices attached on the ultra100 controller, it will be detected. My hardrive btw had been previously partitioned and formatted from another computer system. Everything is working fine . Right now, Im running Prime 95 and SETI for 16 hours. So far system has been stable. I havent really setup my system fully..waiting to get back to my home state to put all my stuff from my P3B-F to the A7V. This will be the real test as I will fillup all the PCI slots easily and be using a different video and audio card plus add my SCSI card. This is what I have in my system at the moment: Duron 650 with PAL 6035 heatsink/fan, Maxtor ultra66 hd (15 GB) connected on primary ultra100 controller, Delta 50Xcdrom, Mushkin PC100 SDRAM (128megs),8megs ATI Rage Pro AGP card, linksys NIC, SIIG PCI soundcard.

Just set up a Tbird 800 (running at 950 at 1.8v at 56c) with a Geforce2 GTS, SBlive, 3com 3c509b TX, Adaptec scsi card, 256M PC100 (makes 133!).

I'm using the standard ATA66 ports (might switch to the promise 100 after a few more driver revisions).

The only problem I had is that I had to disble the SB16 emulation to get all the IRQ's in a nice order. That seemed to be cosmetic only because I haven't seen any performance problems at all.

I was hesitent about the VIA platform (bad experience with a friends MVP3) but this stuff seems quite solid so far.

Enlight case, A7V, TBird 750 (boxed), 128mb pc133, SB Live Platinum, Voodoo3 3500, Smartstream DSL, Maxtor 13gb, MS Intellitype Pro, CD, etc...

This is only the second system I have put together. I had a few problems, but think they were related to moving Win98SE from the old system, not the motherboard. I suggest a fresh install of Windows whatever you do. I tried to just plug-in my drive after moving it from an Asus P5A and it wasn't stable. Yes, Windows detected all the changes, but it never seemed "right". After re-formatting and installing Win "fresh" things are great. I haven't had any boot, compatability, thermal, IRQ or other serious problems others have. My DSL connection rocks and I'm a happy camper!

Now that everything is working, I am going to give the "pencil trick" a shot and go for 900!
