Asus A8N Deluxe - Dual Gigabyte LAN?

Noob question here,

My new Asus A8N SLI Deluxe has a dual gigabyte LAN feature. What would I use this for? Currently my cable modem is connected to a router, I then have my computer connected to the router. Should this setup change?

Can I connnect another computer to my ASUS A8N SLI using the open LAN port?

It's useful for people who do a simple peer-to-peer cross over connection. Lets say you have a lap top and you have a large file of say....500 MBs. You can connect your lap top to your desk top using a cat 5 cross over and transfer the 500MB file @ 100Mbps/sec. I'm sure you all ready knew that though.

Supposedly the gigabit port has 1 gig a sec transfer hence gig. I have yet to even use the port on my board, nice setup

I have used the direct computer to computer setup with a crossover cable before, I just wanted to make sure that this was what it was for. This will come in handy when transfering files from my old PC to my new build.

The system so far is stable, I have yet to update the BIOS but will do that tonight. At stock everything seems fine, I guess I was lucky (or I actually listened to the advice of forum members (ie. read, read, read) and took my time assembling my new rig. Not sure how to test it though.

or you could just plug into the router/hub/switch... dual gig lan is pretty useless unless you want to use your computer as router. cable modem in on one, and out on the other to the network. usually you see them on servers as redundancy or for bandwidth boosting.

Ever wondered why you never got 50kbps downloads on your old 56k modem?

Its gigaBITs - not gigaBYTES. hense take 1gBIT or 1024mBITS and devide by 8 to get the value in BYTES gives 128mBYTES per second. So the maximum theoretical bandwidth of a 1gbit lan port is 128meg a second. Trouble is my machine cant write to the HDD anything like that fast.....

I have dual nic on my server, the primary nic serves my server as the file server while I use VMWare and create a windows xp pro VM on the same maching using the second NIC card
