Asus A8N-E chipset fan: video/audio clip

For this video clip, I unplugged all the drives and fans, including the video card fan.

right-click, Save As ----> http://www.omnicast.net/~tmcfadden/A8N-E.AVI

The clip is taken from close range, so it will seem louder than it really is, but it gives you a feel for the pitch of the sound. I think silent-PC folks will find it somewhat annoying. Once the mobo is broken in and I'm satisfied it's healthy, I may put on a large passive heatsink in its place, but as a 15k SCSI user, it's not like I was expecting dead silence in the first place

I'd take a second clip that puts the noise into context of a fully-running system with all drives and fans operating, but as usual I'm practically out of space on my ISP. Maybe later I will do some in .WMV format that are more compact.

Cliff Notes version: not silent at stock speed. If this bugs you, plan to take corrective action.

Sure is one annoying little beast.

BTW, I'm seriously considering this board. How do you like it, aside from the NB fan? Did you overclock it? If so please post your results and system config.

Thanks for giving us some heads-up info on this mobo. I was planning to buy this mobo and some did say that the fan is loud so I was thinking of buying a passive heatsink or a fan that is silent. Anything you would recommend? I'll wait for the videoclip wherein all is installed and see the result.
However, I also would like to know if the mobo will boot using the Venice without updating the bios to 1003.

Currently I'm using
  • Retail Winchester 3000+
  • 2 x 512MB Corsair XMS 3200C2
  • MSI 6600GT
  • LSI Logic Ultra160 SCSI card and my old Cheetah X15-36LP drive
  • Antec TruePower2 480
  • a 360-day trial of WinXP Pro x64 Release Candidate 2
  • nVidia 6.39A chipset drivers and 71.84 video drivers
  • Avast! 4.6 antivirus (don't try installing Kaspersky AV Personal 5 on WinXP x64 just yet )
I like it fine so far. Didn't try overclocking yet.
However, I also would like to know if the mobo will boot using the Venice without updating the bios to 1003.
Me too! I considered Venice, but was not willing to take the risk of getting a Catch-22 no-POST situation with a 1001 BIOS, which turns out to be what the board came with (from Newegg). Monarch doesn't carry this board yet, or I might've bought it pre-assembled from them to get past that. Not being a bleeding-edge OC'er, the difference between Venice and Winchester isn't that big of a deal, especially since my eye is on a dual-core upgrade within the next year anyway.

One thing to keep your eye on is that a tall heatsink will technically intrude into the space for the PCIe cards (which I think is the reason you don't see nF4 boards with passive cooling), although if you aren't putting some killer full-length card in there, it won't matter. I was thinking about using the big passive heatsink I scavenged from my dead Asus A7V333-RAID, which looks like the one in this photo, but another option might be the Zalman passive ones or the Thermalright, here's some to check out at SVC: link to chipset coolers.

your fan is silent compared to mine (A8N-E too) Mine is buzzing, rattling grinding like a 10 years old fan... well its lound. I'm probably going to RMA it

I was right about the bios. I e-mailed them(newegg) and one guy said they're not hardware techs. How can they sell such things if they don't know what they're selling(mobo bios, mobo rev.)? Might as well buy a pre-assembled from monarch. I hope A8N-E Premium is not a myth. Pretty sure Rev. E bios will be preinstalled.

For the NB fan, if you don't mind the agony of reading through all the pages, there is a dedicated topic on this forum to the A8N-sli's fan which is the same one.

For myself, I thought about going for Zalmans's shorter NB heatsink and slapping on a fan that could be speed controlled through speedfan or a Zalman speed controler ($6.95). If you go the way of passive cooling, the larger Zalman heatsink will probably be OK if you don't plan on overclocking.

As for booting with Venice or Sandiego this
guy says it works fine.

We don't know if he updated his bios from 1001 to 1003 when he still has the winnie and before installing the venice. We even do't know if the the mobo that the etailers are selling is Rev. 2.00 because they're not posting it. Baaru was concerned also because he's getting san diego which we don't know if it will boot up on this mobo. Mechbgon bought this mobo from newegg which came up with 1001, lucky enogh he's got a winnie. How about for those who will be their first time set up?No extra CPU.

0 kbps for me. It started the download but it's sitting here doing nothing...more like 0.0001kbps. Can you send it to someone who can mirror it?

Sorry about that, did you try right-click & save? Otherwise I can email it to anyone who wants to mirror it.

Thanks, I am DL'ing it and will email it off in about 15 minutes I'm on a crummy HP that I'm de-virusing for someone, so I don't have the file myself on this rig.

So the video clip doesn't play for you guys? I must be a 'tard at the video stuff.

Yes, I tried two nights in a row and it didn't work. It downloaded in about 3 seconds tonight. Is that a new link?

And thanks for the video! I'm not putting up with that crap. I want an A8N-E, but I don't like that sound at all. Passive...

Sorry if this is resurrecting a dead post. However, I have the Venice 3000+ and this mobo. It booted fine and didn't have to upgrade the BIOS. This fan is like a chainsaw though....I'm contacting their support now.
