Hi,

I just got the A8N-E and I'm running into some problems booting it up. I have a SATA drive and a IDE drive. I've installed XP on the SATA drive while the IDE has some data in it. The IDE drive is set to Secondary Slave. In the BIOS, I've set the Boot Sequence to go HD then CD-Rom, etc. In the Boot->Hard Drives configuration page, I've set the SATA drive to be first then the IDE drive. However when I try to boot it up, it says "DISK BOOT FAILURE...".

Does anyone know how I can resolve this? Thanks

EDIT: I just want to add that when I created the partition while installing XP, it recognized my partitions in the IDE drive as C:, D:, E:, etc. and hence set the SATA drive letter to be J:. I don't know if this matters but thought it might be useful.

Well Cheetah --- brand "newbie" bunny here w/ a VERY strange question -- CAN ANYONE TELL ME, now that I am totally excited at the thought of gettiing a new system based on 8N-E board ... WHY IT IS THAT IT IS NO LONGER LISTED ON THE NEW ASUS WEBSITE ???? [and believe me, I looked repeated times] .. ! Pretty scary to make a buy decision [not to mention the 86-1/2 hours I have spent in research] .. on a board ASUS has chosen to possibly DUMP (my guess is the usual one -- TOO GOOD ... too hard to keep up w/ demand on ) ! Anyone who has noticed this -- would LOVE your comments !!! -- Thanks from the "bunny parade" !

PLEAZE respond to my e/mail if possble: maggieblack8@yahoo.com.au if you have anything to share !

And Yes <chuckles> I KNOW that is a rather "WOLFISH" looking bunny -- will find a cuter drop-in avatar in a bit !

greybunny, don't worry, even if they stop making the A8N-E, it doesn't mean it's a bad choice... it has X2 support, the latest nV nF4 Ultra chipset, and all the features one might want (cept maybe IEEE1394) but it's a great mobo, and don't hesitate to buy one, I am loving mine, which I just picked up last week!

PPPP: This is a known issue when installing xp. Ensure that your IDE is physically disconnected at the time of xp install. Then the SATA will get C, CD ROM D and the IDE slave E, F... and boot should proceed as normal. You can try to change the drive letters through disk management but I am not too sure that it will help. You may need to re-install xp. I would also suggest updating to the latest bios.

some people might freak out over that, but as far as I'm concerned, that is very normal.

I'm having some issues with OCZ 2x512 sticks. I can get the system to boot with one stick in B1, It won't post (long beeps) in A1, it won't Dual channel (A1, B1 or A2, B2) but it will run in B1 and B2. Is this a mobo issue with my double sided ram, or is this a faulty memory channel? how much perfomance am I losing by single channeling my ram? I'm in Japan, RMAing my mobo isn't really an option.

Bios 1008

Spiffae: From the A8N-E manual, some types of double sided sticks may not work in dual channel config due to CPU limitations. If one stick only, you have to use slot B1. But by and large most newer sticks should work in dual channel. Your CPU?

By new I meant latest types. Anyway try and see if you can borrow some more RAM to troubleshoot whether it is the RAM or the motherboard.

Thanks Craig -- turns out someone in HIGHER AUTHORITY (absolutely TOTAL ROFL giggles) @ ASUS chose to re-do the website to it's current .. (Um is it OK to use the word "perpetually scuzzy" here ?)status ... and thought it was kool if EVERYONE had to start w/ a GLOBAL link to find anything. They only got 255,110 hits from the Netherlands users in the first 2-hours after seeing the new site -- [just a pittance, huh ?] he he he. Anyway, got a hold of ASUS w/ someone who actually WORKS for a living there, and he (REALLY polite too) ... told me none of the ASUS staff like the new site either ! But ... that the A8N-E is ABSOLUTELY NOT being dropped or changed or anything as far as he knew ! So .. THANKS for the nice response to this "newbie bunny" -- feels good to know someone here actually cares about beginners ) And w/ THAT, is it OK to ask another [?] --- Is there a batch number/date preference for the current 2005 year of AMD 3000/3200 chips that folks here prefer ? [AND} ... Are all new Athlon/64s a victim of AMD's "locked multiplier" ?
Again, "Thank you" Craig for the kool site and the comments --- guess this IS like a bicycle, 'cept you have to LEARN to ride @ the start ! Anticipating a REALLY good ride w/ some of you --- you are ALL soooooooooooo smart about computers here !!!!! Maybe if I just trim some of this "greybunny hair" out of my ears, I will be able to listen better, huh ?

johnnqq,

Apart from the fan issue, this board has been good to me. The only other problem I had is not related to this board : File corruption with NForce Ide drivers. I reverted to a previous version.

Keep in mind there is no Firewire.

Ok heres my problem.
I have tried 3 differant power supplies,
2 differant graphics cards
differant memory
in the case and outside the case but nothing will get this board to boot or give any video signal.
Everything is new out the box.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

I have the same problem.

I bought a refurb board back in June. Around August I started having similar problems that you have. Most of the time when I'd boot, both my monitors wouldn't get a signal. Sometimes it would get a signal, but then I'd get a black screen before I could get into Windows. On a rare occassion I could get into Windows but lose the signal after a minute or two.

I swapped out my 6600GT for a 6600GT I had in another system. I tried a different (working) power supply and that didn't work. I RMA'd my A8N-E. I hooked the replacement board up last night and now I'm having the same problem as you

Thanks for the reply

After trawling many forums, I am beginning to suspect the psu. The Q-Tec is cheap and cheerful but only has the 20 pin atx connector. I got a 20 to 24 adapter but still no go.
I've left the offending item in local pc store to try a few diagnostics but I think I'll be purchasing a better quality psu with proper atx 2 specs. Tagan, Enermax,Ocz and Antec spring to mind..
Any recommendations welcome
Cheers

I thought it could be my power supply. I have an old Enermax 431W which is about 3.5 years old. I hooked up a Seasonic 330W (which had the 24 pin atx connector) from another system up to it and got the same results.
