One reason for no beeps could be you have the cable plugged in to the board the wrong way but probably not an issue. Try running your system out of the case.

I am also wondering about what if anything is new with the beta bios. I might give it a try to see if the 1T command rate bug is fixed but my hopes are low.

Mine came with four SATA cables, 2 HD cables, one cdrom cable, SATA power cables, and one floppy cable. Unless you are buying it as OEM it should come with all the cables and manuals and drivers. This board OCs quite well despite the 1T bug. I can get my 3000+ to 2.4GHz stable @ 1.4V using a 333MHz ram divider. One thing about this board if you don't know already is you can't OC memory on it past 245-250MHz @ 1T unless you use 2T or 333MHz memory divider.

you said it came with 4 SATA cables and 2 HD cables, aren't those the same things?

hmm, i plan on buying DDR500 PC3200 G.Skill Extreme 2 x 1GB to OC my Dual Core when i need to, so i guess it's safe to use it would be pointless and waste of money?

i'm new to OC-ing so forgive me

SATA and HD cables are different interfaces.

SATA cable
http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/productimage/12-104-694-01.JPG

standard 80 pin HD cable
http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/productimage/12-105-909-02.JPG

This all al that came with my board:
http://img.ncix.com/images/14268_Accessories.JPG

Well the ram would sort of be a waste. Basically lets look at my CPU for example.

9x245FSB=2205MHz with memory running @ 245MHz (490MHZ 1T

9*266FSB=2400MHz with memory running @ 221Mhz (442MHz) 1T

Bascially you could reach the rated 250MHz (500MHz effective) but at a lower OC speed. But if you a higher CPU OC then you would sacrifice some bandwidth. Since you said you are new to OC'ing I was gonna suggest getting the DFI NF4 Ultra-D.

Heres a guide from anandtech's website:

Hi werty and others

I am a n00b builder, just got an X2 3800+ and plan on buying this board. I am not an overclocker, nor a gamer. Just before I wade through the 41 pages of this thread, can anyone link me to an explanation of what you mean by the '1T bug'? The relevant parts of my rig are

X2 3800+

mobo to be decided (A8N-E??)

OCZ 2 X 512 Premier Series PC3200 2.5-3-3-7

A quality 480W (or better) PSU

I'm willing to search through this thread, but this is just in case someone has a link. Remember I am a n00b builder and I'm hoping for a relatively smooth first experience.

Thanks

Hello All,

I was considering adding more memory to my system. After reading the manual it seems the optimum configuration is either 4x 512MB or 4x 1GB modules.

Does anybody have experiences on having a system with 3GB? 2x 1GB + 2x 512MB?

The manual also states that it might detect less the 4GB if you install four 1GB modules. Does anyone know how much is lost?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Question for you all. I posted earlier in this thread about a very faint high pitched whine coming from my case and that it only appeared when i instlled this motherboard and a cpu cooler. Well i just switched my cpu cooler and i still have the whine so it has to be something on this motherboard and i im suspecting it is the chipset fan so is it possible to unplug the fan and go as far as the bios so i can listen to see if it makes an difference? ...small things like this bug me so i would hate to have to replace the motherboard.

P.S. just installed an amd 4000+ ..any tips for a noob at overclocking?

Sorry but I don't have a link about the 1T command rate bug but I can explain it. Memory on a A64 system runs at 200MHz (400MHz effective) at 1T. This 1T bug only allows most users to overclock their memory to around 250MHz (500MHz effective) at 1T. If you ran your memory at 2T there isn't a problem but you loose alot of memory bandwidth.

I would recommend to use a combination of 2x512MB or 2x1GB. Using 4 memory sticks sets the memory speed to 333MHz if I am not mistaken. Even though this board has 4 dimm slots 2 of and size is recommended.

Most likey it is the chipset fan running at full speed (100%). Is the board new? If it isn't then the fan just needs a drop of oil.

On another note anyone try the beta bios?

Ok, thanks werty. I guess this means that if I do not intend to overclock the board, the 1T bug won't affect me.

It is 3 weeks old. Does the beta bios let me turn the chipset fan down? If it is the chipset then i don't mind replacing it for a better quieter one.

Do anybody has USB 2.0 problem with this board?

I have Abit AN8 Ultra, which also has NF4 Ultra chipset. My current system hangs whenever I transfer big file like 3-4 GB over USB 2.0(like USB enclosure hard disk).

I am deciding if I should buy this instead of A8N - SLI Premium. I am not going to use the extra LAN port and also I am not going to use RAID on either SATA/PATA. I am also not going to use SLI. So do you guys think this board is a better choice for me?

Most important thing for me is stability. I also want to do bit over clocking, like running my 3800+ x2 at 2.5GHz and RAM at 250MHz. I am thinking to buy CORSAIR XMS 2GB c2pt

it is correct that if you use 4x512 sticks it does set the memory to 333,but you can set it to 400 in the bios and runs quite happily..albeit at 2T

Is there a Bios Mod or official version that allows setting more than 1.55VCORE?

Is there any way to disable that feature that keeps USB devices on after the system is turned off? (somenthing w/ +5VSB (Stand By) power rail, sometimes there is a jumper to ddisable it).

Thanks

So far since I owned the board I went through alot of BSOD tweaking it for OC'ing but everything is stable when I OC my 3000+ 1.8GHz to 2.4GHz @ 1.4V. One thing though you won't be able to get your memory at 250MHz at 1T, at 2T you can. I said so many times this board has a 1T bug where most user can't get their memory to 240-250MHz. Mine maxes out at 244MHz before SuperPI gives me errors and unstability.

I think so but 2T just gives up so much bandwidth. Better off getting 2x 1gig sticks. Also I don't think it is worth gett 2gigs. Read this article for more.

I have not seen a website devoted to any modded bios so far for this board. I guess this board isn't so popular as lets say a DFI NF4 Ultra-D. Not sure about the USB question you are asking. Check the manual I guess.

I bought one of those from Newegg; it was dead on arrival. Not that I do it often, but this will be the last time I throw money into the wind for cheap no-name crap.

Since you are using one hard drive, did you disable raid in the BIOS?
Are you loading the Nvidia disk drivers by pressing F6 at the beginning of the install?
How are you partitioning and formatting the drive?
You say XP2. Does that mean Windows XP svc pack 2?

Thansks for your reply.
I talked to my vendor, and they seemed to think that my SATAII problem was a maxtor problem, so I got a Seagate HD instead. same problem. As a last ditch effort, I put the HD into my slightly older machine with an MSI MB, Nforce4 chipset, but SAta 1. It set up properly, I swapped the drive into my other machine and it works great, other than the fact that it never finds the drive when I boot it up. After me boot failure message, I hit reset and no problems....

I ended up RMAing mine, even though I don't plan to use it... it will be good for a spare or to use in an old computer or something. I've ordered one of these instead, but I won't know how it works out until I get it in a few days. I'll report back when I get it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118214 - $5

Or should I go for replacing the North bridge with Asus?

I use this on my A8N-E as we speak and it cools quite well but it was annoying to install.

OCZ 2GB DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Platinum System - $180(AR) + tax

How good this for overclocking, timing looks better than Corsair Twinx2048-3200c2pt, so I guess I can get better overclocking. I am not a mad overclocker.

If you plan on using the Zalman ZM-NB47J cooler you will need a fan to cool it as it wasn't meant to be used for OC'ing. It was meant for silent cooling. Some users had problems because they didn't provide enough cooling to the Zalman cooler when OC'ing.
