Sorry I don't regularily contribute to this forum, but I have a problem with my computer that has really been irritating me and I read part of this thread and I found it might be a good place to ask for help. So two months ago, we built this computer and it runs on a A8N-E motherboard (of course!). After having much fun with the computer, the chipset fan started to spin really slow and upon restarting the computer, it eventually lead to a "CHIP failed or speed too slow". Beginning an amazing 6 day weekend that day, I brought it into a computer store and they said it would take them a week to replace the fan. I thought that was kind of ridiculous so I bought a fan home myself and replaced it. There was one thing I missed though, to remove the previos thermopaste before I installed the new one.

So now, the computer load perfectly but after idling for long times and loading simple programs like MSPaint, it would take about half a minute. Everything would load instantly during a period of time, and after that period of time, loading any kind of program would take a long time again. Sometimes when it loads Windows, it will load it really slowly and the startup items don't load. But sometimes, it loads perfectly fine and fast...

It has only been like this AFTER I replaced the fan... I've ran disk checking, disk defragment, virus checked with AVG, adware checked with Ad-Aware, and registry checked with Registry Mechanics. I tried everything possible to revert the speed back to how it was when i built it... Right now, I don't know if it's hardware problems, or something reatarded in Windows) And I hope it has nothing to do with that extra thermopaste...

Thanks for your help in advance.

Edit: Right, forgot to add. When I game like HL2 and CS:Source, everything runs smooth. Just the loading time after an idle period of time will occur when I load the games (it's so random).

Edit 2: And I should probably give some other specs. Athlon X2 3800+, GeForce 7800 GT, 2GB CAS3 RAM, Seagate 250gb Barracuda SATAII hard drive. That's basically it =) and of course the A8N-E motherboard with an A8N series replacement chipset fan.

Thank you very much

See my posts on page 40 of this thread. I have similar setup with a 120mm 1500rpm intake fan in the front. The NB47J is about 20cm away in the direct path of the fan. The result was about 200MHz higher overclock at cpu stress test, but the system would crash after about 10 minutes of game playing. I think the additional bus activity caused north bridge to overheat and crashed the system.

I mounted a 40x40x10mm fan to NB47J and have no more problem.

Just a question, did anyone of you achieve better overclocking as a result of chipset heatsink upgrade? or is the main reason for the upgrade purely due to sound/noise issue or failing fans?

I changed mine after I read negative stories about the NF4 chipset fan. Even though this board comes with an improved fan I still wanted to put the Zalman NB47J on it. Keep in mind it will not improve your OC if you do not have a fan blowing on it. A 40mm fan fits perfectly.

2 weeks ago, I bought this Board from Newegg. I did have troubles with the Active Armor programs. I did uninstall and it has since worked very good. I have a AMD64 X2 3800+@2400mhz and it is running very stable. Testing it out on Prime95. I have also 2gb PC3200 Gskill Memory, bought along with it Enermax Liberty 500w PSU. It came with Bios 1010 rev. I have installed Nvidia 6.70 chipset drivers and all of the security updates from MS Update site. This is the 2nd system I have built with this Board and the first one had a few bugs in it and I worked them out and it is running great! Asus has good products!

I have these set of RAM for my PC Newegg

maybe it wasnt much of an overclock yet as with these chips I got it so far 232HTT. I didnt overvolt them and I have a AMDX2 3800+@2320mhz and didnt have to add any extra volt to it and have it running rock solid. I am happy with it as it runs w/Asus A8N-E

I can't take all of those, but for the hard disk one, try installing XP with a CD that has SP2 slipstreamed for proper large-disk support, among other nice things (I think that the USB2 drivers require SP2 (or was it SP1?) to be installed first if they are to work properly).

sorry bout above...

Anyway just built (upgraded) my rig.. 3700 x64 San Diego.. A8N-E

Weird ram config, but it works so far. 1x512 OCZ pc3200 platinum enhanced latency 2-3-2-5 (CH5 chips) (in the first far slot- B1) and then in the first 2 slots I have 2x 256 OCZ pc3200 platinum enhanced latency limited edition (BH6 chips)... 2-2-2-7

http://img466.imageshack.us/img466/8509/p3030015custom9tg.jpg

like below - 512 stick on far right.
http://img394.imageshack.us/img394/9607/p3060030custom9kq.jpg

anyway, I am coming from an Abit NF7 with a tbred.. understand how to OC that... I was running a 1500mhz default xp1800+cpu @ 2.2ghz for a couple years.. one of those good steppings. --- AXDA1800DLT3C~JIUHB0321VPMW ---

I have this 3700+ with 1mb cache now, it is supposed to OC well, it runs cool- about 27 to 33C IDLE w/ NO cool and quiet, never goes above 40 load.
I want to OC it, but be able to keep the ram at a consistent speed if I want to.. definitely at first to test out the HT and CPU.

Not sure how to go about this, I am pretty sure this CPU has a locked multiplier, so what do I do with the hyper transport? I just got this board at newegg.. running the 1010 bios.. Mine is a rev 2, not sure which newer bios to use if any, or if the rev2 board takes the same bios.

in the check bios utility I see
Model A8N-e
chipset NF-CK804
date 11/25/2005
etc
etc..

any help appreciated, need some advice with this NF4 ultra board..
rest of rig in sig.

Thanks.

Sorry for the duplicated blank posts . . .

I have finally completed my first self-built PC with an Asus A8N-E 9 (obviosuly) and a Athlon 64 3200+.

Case: Cooler Master Centurion 5
RAM: 512M x 2 Corsair Value Select
PSU: Antec True Power 2.0 430W
Optical drive: Lite-On DVD writer
Graphics card: Grandmars X700 256 DDR2
HDD: WD SATAII 200G

Today I have taken out the stock HSF and replaced it with a Zalman CNPS 7000-AlCu. And replaced the stock chasis rear fan with has a 2-pin connector with a 3-pin 120mm Super-Red fan (recommended by the shop owner).

I have a question - currently my CPU runs at around 27C when idle and rises to 39C when encoding video to Xvid. Ambient temperature is about 20C. Would it be ok for me to undervolt the CPU fan??

here's an idea, does anyone know of any good thorough OC'ing articles for the nforce 4 ultra? I am new to these things and need some good solid info on each setting in the bios.. Been searching on Google, haven't found too much surprisingly.. still searching...

if anyone knows of any, post links please.
(I am sure everyone is reading all the 7900GT/GTX reviews now though...) LOL

Hey folk's i'd like to input my setup for reference on a working system (non oc) for those wondering if the system is stable with all banks filled.

(1006 bios)

3200+ Venice
4x512mb PQI ddr400 mem on 2.5-3-3-7-1T@200mhz (2.5-4-4-8-2T on auto)
1x80gb sata hd running xp64 with m$ drivers
3x120gb ata for storage
antec TPII-550W Supply
Asus 6600GT (doesnt have a power connector)
and of course good ole dvd-writter

Chipset sink was replaced with Zalman passive cooler like most here did.
Unlike the newer bios lowering the ram speed when all 4 banks are filled mine uppped the timing to 2.5-4-4-8 when left on auto.
I guess on 1008+ they changed the strategy on the ram timing when all banks are filled.

Hope this answers a few of the questions out there since i'll take awhile to read thru all of the posts

Given DeltaQ's post, I'll add that my system is stable with all banks filled also (relevant parts: 4400+ X2, 4x 1GB Transcend PC3200 with Samsung chips, the rest is in my sig) running XP x64 for obvious reasons.

I just let Windows manage the swap file... Windows stays happy, and doesn't really touch the page file anyway. I like being able to use 2GB+ in Photoshop, which comes in handy for keeping multiple 10MP DSLR images in RGB/16 with numerous masked layers and adjustment layers in memory, along with the Adobe Bridge and all other usual suspects (Firefox, Outlook, GAIM, etc.). Windows still has extra left over for caching file access from the disk extensively, so the system feels snappier after being on for a day or so than one might think given the older 36GB Raptor that is my system drive. Overall, I like it, but it's not worthwhile for most people, and especially not gaming, where the jump from 2GB to 4GB is not worth the price in lower timings and so forth.

Using Cool'N Quiet and overclocking ususally never works.

Plain and simple overclocking on an A64 system.

1) goto the bios
2) goto cpu settting and set HTT multiplier to 4x or 3x
3) change memory divider to 333Mhz
4) overclocking using ClockGen form CPU-Z website.
5) done

I would get more detailed but too many people ask how to overclock and never try google.

werty316,

OC works great using CnQ....as long CPU-multi is set to max in BIOS (not auto)

if CPU-multi is not set to max, the machine will freeze as soon as CnQ feature is used for first time. CnQ is using different CPU-multis to clock down the CPU, but after "CNQ idle mode", CnQ switches back to max CPU-multi and not to eventually lower set CPU-multi in BIOS.

e30

ps.: i tried clockgen but don't like it. OC using BIOS settings offers best options and fastest performance possible. but, of course, a A64 OC guide should be read.

I have a quick question about RAM. Since OCZ5002048ELGE-K and TWINX2048-4000PT use the Samsung UCCC IC, it wouldn't be compatible with this asus board. True or false? If true, what other good OCing Ram that is DDR500 compatible with my Venice 3000+ Stepping O?
