I decided to change the damn fan, so I removed the m/b.

Well, when I got the ASUS cooler in my hands, and unscrewed the "fan" from the heatsink,
it was a shock that it was a lousy joke in terms of size...

Anyway, it didn't show any signs of rust or collected dust, so the WD solution was pointless.
So, I bought a plain fan (40mmx40mmx10mm) and with some slight modification,
I managed to fit it inside the ASUS heatsink.
JOB DONE!!!

PS. Thanks for your help, e30

Has anyone used this board with one of the newer cards like the 8800GTS or the 2900XT? I haven't been able to get my 2900XT to work properly with it and I'm wondering if it's because it is resting on top of the northbridge chipset fan since it's so long.

Well sadly I can report that I put one of the new 8800GT cards in mine and it FRIED IT.
Don't know if it was a coincidence or what, but my PC is totally dead now (posting on my old P4..)
It worked great for about 3-4 days... then tonight I was playing games and POOF it died totally. Even replacing the old video card didn't work.. it's dead Jim.

How is this possible? I still want to keep my A8N-e but I want to use the 8800 series video card. I just bought 64 X2 4200+ and will later add 2Gb of memory. Will also buy A8N SLI Premium as a back-up. I dont wanna buy LGA775 yet, I'll wait until the DDR3 is mainstreamed and Vista compatibility is fixed.

I have an 8800GTS installed but still have the stock chipset cooler (for now)
I am running 60C (chipset) under load which can sometimes go up to ~70C for a breif moment (while running prime 95)
I have found an aftermarket cooling solution which should work. it's actually a passive sink that has been known to take >10C off your temps

the Thermalright HR-05-SLI

I just ordered this and should get it sometime this week
I will keep everyone posted hopefully with pics...

Turns out one of my ram sticks went bad. Almost 2 years then it fried? No clue why... Could be the extra heat or something of the 8800... though I doubt it. Corsair memory has lifetime warranty anyway, I have returned it, will see if the replacements last...

By the way, those of you with Corsair (ie) C2 ram, what are your settings on this board?

I had a similar experience with my A8N-E deluxe- one of the dual channel ram slots went bad on me after two years. It happened somewhat slowly, causing strange errors that I thought had nothing to do with the ram. Memtest showed large amounts of errors; I replaced the bad stick with another of the same Crucial and it immediately started showing errors.
I gave up and bought a new Intel 975 board and cpu.
Crucial replaced the 1 gig stick of Ballistix with no hesitation when I told them of the Memtest reports. I felt bad about it after finding that the slot was bad, but they said no prob, just go ahead and keep the replacement stick. I made sure to buy new ddr2 ram from them for the new rig.
Hope yours is not the same situation; good luck to you.

The slots are fine, it was the RAM stick. I swapped both a good one and the bad one in all 4 slots to verify this - the good one worked in all 4 slots, the bad one didn't work in any of them.

I'm actually running right now with 4x256MB sticks (1GB), the only problem is I have to use 2T command rate when all 4 slots are full (or, when more than 2 are used). The whole reason I bought the 2GB (2x1GB) was so I could use 1T mode which is much faster (well and to have twice the amount of ram... which does make a diff). I originally put these 4 simms in another computer (which is now sitting ram-less until I get the replacement).

I hope the timings I was using didn't lead to failure...

Was using (from top to bottom in the BIOS, I wrote them down but didn't label them):

Manual
400 Mhz
2
8T
3T
3T
11T
13T
5T
3T
1T

I can't wait... I will be picking one of theses up as soon as possible

I know it's not really the right forum but considering I currently have the K8N-E (which has served me very well) I think I will be sticking with ASUS for mainboards from now on....

on a side note: anyone that is having issues OC'n their K8N-E mobo... MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE FLOPPY ENABLED... I know it sounds dumb but you won't be able to OC you pc stable otherwise if at all. I fought with this for 2 days stright before I figured it out now I have my 4200+ Prime stable (over 18 hours) from 2.2 to 2.8

okay... I have a question for everyone..... if anyone has speed fan installed does anyone know what temp 3 is? when running prime 95 it shoots up to 65C and even hits 70C for breif moments... when I was compiling a map for Half-Life it shot up to 90C lol wtf?!?!
I let you all know that it ran prime 95 for 18 hours with no errors or issues...

maybe just a bad reading/sensor?

I'm going to try everest in a couple hours (I'm at work right now)
and if that doesn't work then I am going to have to buy an IR thermometer and try to pinpoint the source of this heat...

I would have thought 90C would have crashed the system......(or burnt my house down)

okay... so I need to know wtf speed fan is on.....
I can't find any major source of heat coming from my mobo using thermal probes( I know thoses aren't too efficent) I checked all the spots I could think of and nothing got hotter then ~36C everest isn't any help either.... it just gives me CPU and MOBO temps... the chipset is cool to the touch so maybe I wasted my money ordering the chipset heatsink?

here goes another 100$ down the toilet for a IR thermometer...(not down the toilet but I know a lot more better things I could spend 100$ on right now)

okay status update....

So i saturated my system (compiling HL2 maps seems to be the best to get the 90C temp i was wondering about)

I grabbed my IR thermometer and measured around... and pretty much everything was nice and cool... except for one toroid (at least thats what I think they are called. the little ferrite circle with a wire wrapped around it) I found that this one toroid reached up to 70C... it's not 90C but it's the hottest thing I could find... the I/O chips didn't go over ~50C and the chipset was ~45C... I'm guessing that the system is fine but it still bugs me a little bit... but I'm sure it's just a speed fan issue becasue it's not even reading 2 of my chassis fans.. when in the BIOS they show up fine...

please leave your thoughts and opinions

Maybe try PC-Probe 2. I have an A8N-SLI premium and A8N-E, so I'm not sure what speedfan is showing. I have had speedfan show a hard disk temp of ~65C, so I never really trusted it that much.

So, I have a A8N-SLI deluxe that is only posting randomly. We have taken out all the components except the essentials and nothing seems to make a difference. Is there any known issues with this MB that would cause this?

Run Memtest or another memory tester. I had a ram slot that went south and caused the memory in that slot to malfunction/ blow up. One of the results was random posting until I stopped using that slot.

another possible issue may be if you have usb/firewire cables plugged into the headers wrong...
what kind of PSU do you have? how old is it?
make sure you have the power cables for your motherboard and CPU plugged in
what BIOS ver are you running?

Hi all!! I just found you while seaching for answers to my A8ne dilema. Currently windows seems to be corruped- doing odd things, wont go online, ect. at first I thought it was the hard drive so I put a new WD raptor in and acted as if it were a new PC. XP Pro sp2 (oem disk) finishes the install, restarts and vola! "error loading operating system" appears- about when windows should. This is the first problem Ive had with the the a8ne in two years! Ive tried all sorts of settings, different xp disks. So this morning I fired up this one (Asus a7n266vm) (another great board) and when searching. Any clues? new bios?

Probably SATA corruption. Did you use the same cable? Have you suddenly switched to new SATA drivers? If you hadn't changed SATA drivers and a new cable doesn't help, the SATA controller may be dying.

Yep, new everything and I tried a handfull of other things between then and now.

I do really like the A8ne's but if I have to pull the board is it worth going a step or two higher (mine is a plain A8n-e) like A8N32-SLI Deluxe ?

Im not opposed to getting away from the A8 series either but Im quite sold on Asus or is this somthing I should reconsider too?

Hello Fellow A8N-E users.

I recently purchased a computer used from a friend which has an ASUS A8N-E motherboard in it. It currently is running Windows XP SP2, 1G of memory, and an AMD 64 3500+ Processor, and an NVidia 8600 GTS video card. Well, I reinstalled windows due to a new SATA hardrive that I purchased, and after I installed the V6.65 Chipset Drivers from ASUS.com, it caused my computer to freeze that the black XP screen while loading.

I figure it might be the SATA drive that is bad, so I did a fresh install on an IDE hard drive, but to no avail....same problem.

I flashed the BIOS up to the 1013 (newest version), and still have the same problem.

Anyone got any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Ran a Memtest, the memory is fine. In fact, we replaced the memory just to be sure, still have the same problem.

I havent been that unlucky yet mine is still working for the most part. On mine, both IDE and SATA drives seem fine, some things in windows dont work though and it wont let me reload.

This is true before and after loading the newest chipset and bios.

I have some timeme this morning and Im going to look for some new diagnostic software.
