The mobo temperature almost certainly does not come from the southbridge itself. Touch the heatsink for a while, did it burn you?

If big heatsinks get scalding hot without a fan on them, that little weentsy one is going to get hotter than heck without its fan running, look how little surface area it has.

Yeah, you're gonna need a more permanent solution to that one. Lots of people here seem to like the zalman NB47J passive heatsink. You could put that in and get some air running over it and it should work. But you shouldn't really leave it just unplugged like that, the heatsink isn't meant to take it.

I replaced my chipset fan with the Vantec Copper Iceberg, MUCH quieter & cooler! It's a tight fit as the area around the mouting holes is rather crowded, but it does fit. I suppose if you wanted to you could rotate the heatsink 180° and epoxy it on, but I just put some AS5 on the chipset and used the mounting pins. The only problem with it being so crowded is that, the 3-pin connector for the fan doesn't push dowwn all the way, however it still works fine being connected halfway.

Here's a pic to show you how tight of a fit it is.

You have already responded to those who feel, like I do, that just unplugging the Asus HSF and hoping that your 120mm intake "Tri-Cool' wll provide enough cooling for the nf4 chip is over-optimistic at best.

Yeah, I know it's just temporary. The NB47J does look very good, the only issues I'd have with that would be wiring getting in the way and safe installation. It would be great if some local retailers would have it, I don't want to pay an 80% premium just for shipping costs like Newegg does:

I know exactly how you feel. I felt that way when I payed NewEgg's high price for my NB47J. I've noticed that Newegg makes up for other "losses" by charging rediculous shipping charges on those small items and does not reduce the combined shipping cost so if you order any more than one of those small items you can really get burned in shipping.

That's extremely dangerous, so it'd be a good idea to plug the fan back in until you can get the NB47J. The heatsink included in the stock hsf is barely sufficient for active cooling, much less passive cooling. I bought my NB47J from SVC for about $7 shipped. Choose First-Class shipping at checkout. It only takes 2-3 days like Priority, and it's dirt cheap.

If anyone's interested, I'm done meessing around with my nF4 cooling. I'm using a plain NB47J (no fan attached) in a Sonata II with an Antec 1200rpm 120mm front fan in addition to the stock Tri-Cool fan running at low speed (also 1200rpm), along with a modified Zalman VF700-AlCu on my X800 XL. The VF700 blows air onto the NB47J and the front 120mm fan helps slightly too. I've posted more detailed results in the massive nF4 thread. Go to the very last post.

I have placed two orders with SVC in the last month based on Gerbil's recommendation. Both orders went very smoothly and were delivered quickly. Customer service was also excellent as they quickly and with no-questions-asked cancelled my order for the P180 which was listed in stock and then "disappeared". They adjusted my order and sent just the cables I had ordered and then I ordered and received the P180 from the excellent TechOnWeb.

I would have ordered my NB47J from them too if I would have discovered them before I ordered it from NewEgg.

Please bear in mind that the NB47J price is an exception at SVC. On the whole, with a few exceptions, their prices are CONSIDERABLY higher than any other vendor for the same component.

I'm having a problem with a machine I just built:

LINKSYS WMP54GS WIRELESS-G PCI NETWORK CARD 802.11G 54MBPS 2.4GHZ W/ SPEEDBOOSTER

Frequently, on power-up, I get no video. As far as I can tell, based on HDD activity, the machine is not loading the OS when this happens.Once it's running, the machine is fine. I've upgraded the BIOS from 1001 to 1005, but the problem persists.

Everything's running "out of the box"...no overclocking, voltage adjustments, etc.

Any suggestions? Any additional information I could provide that might help? Thanks in advance.

I had a case of no video, but the OS did continue to load; it was because my monitor was on DVI, and the card wasn't enabling video output on that output. Connecting to the analog (HD15) output long enough to get into Windows and change the display output settings fixed the issue. I assume this is not your system's problem, but mention it anyway to justfiy asking you how your monitor is connected. Are your fans all spinning up correctly?

Fans are fine, and monitor (Samsung 900NF) is connected using 15-pin D-sub, not DVI. Thanks.

Your power supply looks perfectly adequate, so I doubt that would be a problem unless you happened to get a faulty one. I assume that you have already tried clearing the CMOS, probably many times... Unfortunately, for the moment I am out of ideas.

I don't want to pay $60 shipping for a $5 part, that's ridiculous.

So instead of shelling out a few dollars for shipping you'd rather fry your nf4 chip and hope that you can convince Asus to RMA the board ??? This option will cost you much more in shipping cost by the time you ship the board back to Asus.

Worse yet, would you rather face the worst-case scenario of having to "shell out" for a new mobo ???

THAT makes a LOT of sense !!!

There seems to be a lot of people wanting to quiet the northbridge cooling solution. So here is a pic of what I did. Hopefully it will give you some ideas (cable mgmt isn't one of my strong points).

Nah, the original fan's plugged back in, while that and turning the intake to full speed reduces the load temps by about 5 C, that fan isn't going to last very long anyway. I've tried calling ASUS but their call center went down after they put me on hold for a half hour. I'll try calling again early tomorrow, it should hopefully be back up by then. If they won't get me the NB47J, then Tankguys offered me one for free if ASUS doesn't resolve it. But really, for a $120 board I was expecting a better heatsink/fan or heatpipes; an extra $2 wouldn't kill anybody if they're already spending this much.

Well that's interesting my shipping for cheapest ground is calculated at $4.08. But your link just shows the cost of the heatsink itself.

But there's supposed to be a Fry's electronics close by, I'll try giving them a call to see if they carry that heatsink and their price for it.

Yeah, the link does show just the NB47J price. The cheapest for me is First Class Mail. Did you try that?

Ok now I found it. Just going to look around a bit more before actually buying it. Say, if it was first-class mail for you, how was it packaged? And did it get to you intact?

Ok I called ASUS motherboard support. They handed me off to RMA support, I gave them my motherboard and the woman on the line said "Oh, it's the fan thing, right?" I should have a new fan here by next week... let's see how well it works.

If you've read the previous posts in this thread you will discover that the "replacement" fan you will be getting from Asus is in fact the stock fan they use on the "deluxe" version of the A8N-SLI board. It is barely any better than the fan used on the A8N-E and the A8N-SLI (non deluxe). It spins a little more slowly (ar around 5500 RPM) but has a VERY SMALL heatsink with a VERY SMALL surface area. It does NOT do a good job at dissipating heat well and that's why most people who have posted in this thread have resorted to other options.

Now I do know one person who used the Asus "replacement" fan in place of a passive hsf on a different brand of nf4 ultra board. This person felt that the asus "replacement" fan was a reasonable trade-off on that PARTICULAR board. Again, however, most Asus A8N series users opt for a solution OTHER than the Asus "replacement" fan.

But, good luck to you !!!

I think I got an issue with my board... In the BIOS I've set my HTT multiplier to 4x, and I'm running the FSB @ 222mhz (with the ram indexed to "333"), but SiSoft Sandra tells me that my HTT frequency is 1110/2220mhz (IE: HTT multiplier is running @ 5x)... my ram is running correctly at ~180mhz.

I'm running the 1005 BIOS.

So far, at 222x9 I'm getting my 3000 venice (1.8ghz stock) @ 2.0ghz, but I want a bit more.
I've disabled CNQ, and the other Asus Qfan utilitiy or whatever it's called... any thoughts?

I think some of these board BIOS chips have problem. I got an email from tech said to clear CMOS regarding my Vcore volt does not retain some of the setting. He said if clear CMOS does not work I can send the chip in to reprogram or get a new chip. I return the first one for the same problem. This is the second one with the same problem.

I m returning it and get an Abit AN8 Ultra.
