Well, do you have more than 10mm of clear space above the current HSF assembly on the northbridge? I can't guarantee that it will work, nor can I guarantee how well it will cool, but on the other hand I can't imagine it being any less adequate than the crappy solution that ASUS put on there in the first place.

Short of the person who actually did this coming in here to state their results, that's all I can offer. I'd like to hear from someone who has past experience with the proposed cooling method, because it would be simpler than doing the NB47J + side-mounted 40mm fan thing.

Yes ofcourse. But I dont think that everyone thinks about to replace the stock fan with a ADDA fan, the most of them probably looks after a fan that says that its a chipset cooler. And a ADDA fan is more expensive than NB47J, many with NB47J doesnt have a side-mounted fan. I hope the ADDA fan will work. I will buy one as soon Ive called Asus support to see if they can send me the new fan for the motherboard first

Edit: The ADDA fan has a 3-pin connector, what has the stock fan?

I built my rig last week and it's running great. Very happy with it. I ordered the newer NB heatsink from Asus and installed it but my NB temps were still averaging 42 C. I added this and temps dropped to 36C. The CPU runs 29C idle and 41C after three hours of Prime95. Very stable. Still playing with the board. Hope to OC to 2700 GHz.

Sorry for the double post.

Your limk is bad. Here is your link.

I did also post a link to a photo of my chipset, and how I dealt with it (for anyone who missed it).

Good idea! I have a Zalman NB32 sitting around, I should slap it on and get some sort of fan on it. Or rig up some sort of heatpipe.

I called Asus today and they want me to send in the old fan to recieve the new one. I wont do that because I need my computer so I think Im going to buy that ADDA fan, I´ve read in another forum that someone had replacing the stock fan with a Papst fan with same dimensions and it fits

ok I've searched high and low. I need to know what order of software install I need to follow for an A8N-E with an x800xl ati video card. I'm used to just installing the inf stuff from intel and going, but I know it's different here..

I see forceware with numbers in the 70's and another driver with numbers in the 6's..

Can someone set me straight on the order of install and what I need? I don't have ANY documentation, thank you!

What chipset HSF are they shipping now? Less noisey?
Makes no sense to me to buy a mobo and then have to mod the HSF for another $20.

Install Windows first, hopefully with SP2 integrated - otherwise have it on a CD to install immediately thereafter, because your network won't work unless you have a PCI network card that's supported with builtin drivers.

Next, install NForce4-AMD drivers from Nvidia (have them on the same CD); do not install the firewall thing, because it frequently causes major pain. Finally, install your graphics drivers. After that, fill in with anything else (printer, scanner, UPS, or whatever) as necessary.

Ok, you're speaking of the 6.66 drivers, right? So basically they are the intel "inf setup" equivalents then.. Sounds great, was just a little lost. thanks. I slipstreamed the sp2 last August so I'm good to go, and my linksys router takes care of firewall stuff anyway, I have the outbound one too.

thanks!

I don't know about the "Intel INF setup" equivalency, as my last Intel system was a 500MHz Celeron...

And yes, the 6.66 (splendid choice of number, don't you think?) drivers are the ones to get.

In case you're wondering what kind of major pain, I installed the nvidia firewall with the Forceware drivers to try it out. Downloads in IE slowed down to 150KB/s, and most of the downloads were corrupt (I was getting updates from Microsoft). Everything was fine when I disabled it, so I uninstalled it after that. What a POS.

The stock chipset fan is a 5000rpm thingie, and it's still the most annoying fan in my case. I can't imagine how bad the original 8000rpm one was. I'm trying to make this build a quiet PC. So far I have a nice Seasonic SS300, Qfan slowing down the CPU fan, and one low speed 80mm case fan.

I already have a zalman nb47j on the way as I type. That is going on before the board goes in

Hey, I just recently got the A8N-E with a 3000+ venice core chip. I'm having problems with installing windows xp sp2 or sp1. I think it may be my hard drive which I am bringing from my previous machine. I keep getting a BSOD during the install... probably just the hd right?

but it's weird because it was working yesterday in my other machine.. anyways i reformatted it to see if it'd work then.. but no luck.

Have you updated to the latest BIOS yet? Anyway, if you're not installing Windows on a RAID array, you shouldn't need to supply a floppy disk during installation (didn't know if you knew that, so saying it just in case).

yeah, it's not a problem with the floppy, but my drives.. i have two 80GB WDs that i tried in RAID0, and separately but i keep having the same problem. If in RAID0, the BSOD comes up early. If separately, then the BSOD comes up near the end of the installation.
I dunno.. just getting pretty frustrated. I've never had so much trouble setting up windows!

In that case, did you try using F6 to load the SATA RAID drivers from a floppy (even if not using SATA RAID)? I only said that they might not be necessary because I was able to install onto a single drive without loading supplemental drivers. Also, what version of the BIOS are you running?

well at this point, i don't care about raid, i just want to be able to install windows. strangely.. i tried two other HDs with WinXP and the computer keeps restarting after the windows loading thing comes up... i have a venice core chip, and i haven't flashed the bios, could that be the reason?

I would highly suggest updating to the latest stable BIOS (1005) before trying other more drastic and/or time-consuming troubleshooting methods.

Why buy a new HD? Unless you need more space or just want another one, that is...

Anyway, good luck with your efforts, and please keep us updated on how it goes. BTW, if it's not too late, you can flash a new BIOS simply by putting the BIOS file on an empty floppy and pressing ALT+F2 at the POST screen. Much simpler, faster, and easier than dealing with DOS boot disks, and a bit more reliable than using Windows-based flashing applications, IMHO.

One other thing... make sure to do a full format - as opposed to a quick format - to ensure that any bad sectors will be identified so nothing can be written there.

Thanks for your help again. Yeah I just used the CD that came with the motherboard to boot into freedos and I flashed it that way. I was able to install windows, but now windows is acting up... one BSoD so far. Trying to update with security updates but i've had to restart 3 times so far because it keeps freezing up. I haven't messed with any settings like overclocking or anything, so i guess it's some more confusion for a while.

edit: I am using the wacky computer now. seems to be okay.. hard to tell though. updating right now..
