Yup! Cranking it up to 2.8v manually resolved the problem. Wonder how come the prev board automatically handled the voltage requirements. Oh well, 3 months at default and not I have to manually force it. Thanks for the insight though!

Yes, many threads report that manually bumping up the RAM voltage to 2.6-2.8 generally helps the nf4u chipset boards.

Now that for the last 24 hours it has been running stable, I would like to up the memory bus speed to 250MHz (DDR500) without overclocking anything else. So far no dice for me. System won't boot. Basically I want the memory to run at full DDR500 without overclocking PCIx, PCI, CPU. Is this possible?

This is what I have done.

Set FSB to 250MHz.
Set multiplier to 8x (2000MHz 3200+)
Set PCI clock to 33MHz
Set HTT multiplier to 4x (1000MHz) is this right?
Set memory voltage to 2.8v (tried .5 increments to 3V and still no dice)

Do I need to increase CPU voltage? I'm only increasing bus speed, but not overall operational speeds.

Thanks in advanced.

-first fsbxht should be <1000-on your case 250x4=1000 so it's ok
-secondly your ram must be rated DDR500 or PC4000 to accomplish your oc.if not you should manually relax ram timings(eg.,increase cas,...) or use ram divider (use 333 instead of 400 that is 5/6 instead of 1/1)
-third:if your cpu is Ex revision it can usually handle small oc w/o voltage tweakong, but you are doing a 2500mh which may require 1.425-1.45 or even more depending on your cpu potential.
-fourth:you must disable C'n'Q or you will encounter stablity issues.
-fifth: scaling up gradually is better than sudden increases.try scaling fsb every 10 mhz, check stablity ,if ok go up again.
-sixth.if you are only going to increase ram speed, use predefined ram buses that is only available for rev Ex cpus.if you are not sure of your cpu check it with cpu-z.it also gives you the accurate mem speed after using deviders.increasing fsb will also increase your cpu clock.

@ the shutdown problem that may still be there.. i think its essential you uninstall your previous chipset drivers and reboot without em before you update.

HELP!

I seem to have a unique problem with the bios issue. I couldn't get the HT multi out of 4x for the life of me. I never really messed with it until I was using 1008 or the beta 1010. I have tried both the windows flash and the dos flash methods for both. I also set the bios to defaults as soon as I start with a new flash. I said what the heck and tried 1003s and they work. All multis I tried 2-5 (didn't care to try 1) worked fine. Anyways I tried flashing back to 1008 thinking 1003 could have un stuck the ht link. So needless to say I am back on the 1003s and a little ticked off. Anyone have similar issues?...from what I have read it seems like most people are handling 1008 and 1010 fine. Oh yeah...I do have a Sandy 3700 which some pages back seemed to be a more common ground for the people having the problems. I am gonna try talking to asus and see if I can get their arses in gear to release a decent bios. I am not sure if the 1003s will work with 939 opterons, but I guess I will find out when my chip gets here next week.

oh yeah 1001 and 1005 wouldn't flash

how are 1006s?
...I am thinking of trying those tomorrow; I still wish I could run 1008s since it shows that it supports new cpus and chances are...the 939 optys may fall into that category

thanks

update: nvm I tried 1006 and it doesn't work either
it looks like im stuck with 1003 if I want to have control over my HT multi...only visual real difference I can make out from 1003 (and 1001 when I first set it up) vs 1005,6, and 8 are the added dram tweaks...

I don't know what could be causing this and the pessimist I am would bet asus would't know jack doodie as well

Hi guys, had my pc for around 3 mths now.....put up with chipset fan for about 4 weeks (the noise drove me nuts!) silent Zalman fixed that, and improved temp aswell -4/5 deg C.
Just a few quick questions for you.
# My Bios is version 1001, should i change if the pc is ok? and if so, how do I lol
whats best/easiest way for me. (tried online, doesnt work?)
#Wanting to change cpu cooler (getting 57 C gaming) shortlisted Zalman
120mm alcu, and new Blue Orb.....any thoughts? bigger is quieter/cooler right?
but must say the weight does concern me.

# RAM temp, umm where can i see that on this board? its not in asus probe..

I have been OC this board to 240/10...stable, though temps were worrying me so i returned to stock. Any advice here would be much appreciated.....ohh and my build was very much decided by listening to u guys here, thk u

Hi I have 2 questions ( probably stupid ones too ) about how to setup the DRAM in the A8n-e bios (1008).
I have a kingston KHX pc3200 kit of 1gig.
The manufacturer gives the following stats for the memory:
KHX3200A/1G 400MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2 2-3-2-6-1 2.6V
Programmable Read latency 2 (clock)
Programmable Burst length (2, 4, 8)
Clock Cycle Time (tCK) 5ns (min.) / 10ns (max.)
Row Cycle Time (tRC) 55ns (min.)
Refresh Row Cycle Time (tRFC) 65ns (min.)
Row Active Time (tRAS) 40ns (min.) / 100,000ns (max.)

I set the 4 basic settings 2-3-2-6 with no problem.
But where do I set up the 1 (CMD rate)? Do I do it at all?
I set the chip select on the bios to 2T and the computer behaves like it has 'lags' or something. I set it to 1T and everything works MUCH better and is stable even though 2T is supposedly only for unbuffered dimms.

Also, what about the trfc and other settings ? What should they be and how do I calculate the clock cycles from the nanoseconds above?

These are probably noob questions but I'd appreciate some help :|

-Basically updating bios is recommended if you have problems with existing bios or when
more recent bios provides some additional support/features,etc.
-Your high cpu temp under load might be due to overvoltaged venice by bios that officially doesn't support venice. So,updating to new bios is reasonable before changing cooler and I found asus update through file easy and troublefree but flashing through dos
is safer and more reasonable.
-As far as I know this board doesn't show ram temp.

-All you have to change are the first four parameters(2,3,2,6 for CAS,RAS to CAS,RAS precharge and Tras) and changing other variables may only cause instablity.Using a dual
channel kit like yours, you have to select 1T for more performance. Also remember to give you DIMMs at least 2.7v for more stablity.calculating of 5-10 ns :1000/10-1000/5=100-200
which translates into 200-400 Mhz in DDR.that's all that I know. One last thing that I've
seen in Anand's reviews is setting Tras to 8-12 depending on the chipset for better
performance.

well i tried 1005 again and it works (as far as HT multis go) but its the most unstable of em all so far...

anyone have the 1006.003's (not the 1006s on asus site right now)?.

..oh yeah, if ya wanna see my problem its about 5 posts up. thanx.

I'm having a major problem with my A8N-E, and i was hoping that someone would be able to help me...since i tried emailing asus and haven't gotten squat from that.

I originally had 1Gb of OCZ Gold Dual-Chan DDR400 (2x512), and everything was fine. I decided to make use of my remaining DIMM slots and purchase another pair of the exact same ram. However, after installing, the RAM Speed in the boot log was reduced from 400Mhz to 333Mhz.
I know the new RAM is still capable of 400Mhz, because I tried replacing the old ram and just have the new one installed by itself (thus, the new 1Gb of ram was running by itself) so the RAM itself is not the issue.

So, I'm really a fish out of water atm, I need help getting my speed back up to 400Mhz for the full 2Gb. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Venice (Rev Ex) or newer cpu's have addressed this issue.your cpu might be old or you
might be using older bios.

Hi friends. I'm spanish user, my apologizes for my poor english. I have a A8N-E three weeks ago. I'm very pleased with this mobo.... My question is next:

Is recommended install NVIDIA SW IDE or not? What about your experiences? My HD is a Hitachi Sata II T7K250.

Thank you everybody

cymanet - it depends on each config actually. I do get HDD paging device errors occasionally on boot up but have not faced any other problems. So I am using the nVidia IDE drivers. Some people report that using nVidia IDE but disabling ncq also helps. Try and see what happens in your case. You can always uninstall the nVidia IDE drivers if you have any problems or issues.

Hey pedramrazi, thk u for ur reply.... upgraded the Bios to ver 1003, I am now able to run cpu voltage at 1.4v, and temps have dropped significantly (especially when idle).
rarely does it run over 51C at full load.
Another thing i noticed was my ram settings are slightly different than before, and if i change to the 2T to 1T, the board is very unstable..why? wasnt like that b4?
Also OC isnt as stable as before either....cant get it running 10x over 215...
The board runs much cooler, but anything set over stock usually turns into a restart, i want to OC as I do notice the difference, who has any ideas .....?

Excuse me guys but ,I have been hearing things, and I want to ask: does this board continue to have problems with SATA II (NCQ capable) hard drives?

Olyros, I do have occasional disk errors at boot up, but otherwise no other issue / data corruption or anything. I have a SATA-II HDD (Samsung 160GB) ncq capable and NCQ is enabled. I am using 6.66 chipset drivers, 77.77 display drivers and 1006 bios. Since all is working smooth and stable (no overclocking - do not feel the need to) I have not bothered updating to latest 1008/1010 beta bios or 6.70 chipset drivers or 80xx series display drivers.

Hey Corsa, I'm happy it worked out.I wonder why you don't upgrade to most recent bios as it's more appropriate for oc'ing.Another thing about this board is to overvoltage dram to at least 2.8v for more stable operation. As you're using value ram you should reduce ram freq to 333,reduce HT multi to 3x,etc to oc successfuly.my 3000 venice is working fine @ 9x300@1.45-crucial ddr400@ddr500@2.8@3,3,3,8@1T
if you could not oc let me know to give you other clues.
nForce driver 6.7 resolved my ncq problem.

Hey people i just joined here...and i've got a problem with my A8N-E. I bought an 3000+ that used to do 9x312 with his earlier owner prime stable at 1.45 volts at 42 degrees load. I want that too so my memory will run 210 mhz at a 266 divider wich it's just cabable of (valueram) The power supply is large enough, a antec smartpower 500 watt with 1 17A@12V rail and 1 19a@12v rail and a sapphire X800GTO[sup]2[/sup]. Is there a fix for the bios not being able to go over 300 mhz? i can put it on 9x312=2808 mhz, but cpu-z will not tell it over 9x300 and my memory also runs just below 200 mhz while it should be just over 200 mhz. It sucks since i want FX-57 speeds up and running. Is there a fix because i know there are more people with this problem. Htt is set to 3x mem to 200 mhz, while 220 mhz stable cl 2.5. pci 33.33 mhz, pci-e at 100 mhz so they both aint the problem too. Anyone must have a solution right because this is a waste of memory and cpu speeds and i dont want this mobo if it cant do what it states too do. (200-400 mhz free selection of cpu speed)

Hey newcomer,Updating to more recent bios resolves the issue.however, sticking ram to anything other than 333 & 400 sucks on my board,I wish you don't have such problem.one last hint is to go with crucial value rams as they are capable of DDR500 easily.did you mod your x800GTO2 to 16 pipelines? let me know as I'm considering it as an upgrade.

Hmmm... I have downloaded both 6.70 chipset and 81.94 display. Maybe this weekend will try and mess up what is working well... and report.
