hey corsa, thanks for the tip, i can set DDR300 with A64Tweaker (verified with CPU-Z), but after saving values to use on windows startup and reboot, DDR300 is not set, have to fix it manually.
did you check out, if "apply settings on startup" is working on your machine?

tried to set DDR within windows before with "systool", looks similar to A64Tweaker but did not work at all, only setting HTT showed effect.

so, for now its good news that DDR300 can be set on A8N-E, i hope someone is able to implement that option in a modded bios.

at the moment i'm running my 3200+ E6 at
1,4V / 10*245=2450mhz / HT4x = 980 / DDR333 = 408mhz CR 2T

can run stable at 2780mhz, but CPU is getting pretty hot ~60°C
1.52V / 10*278=2780mhz / HT3x =834 / DDR300 = 396mhz CR 1T

my ram can be OCed only marginally, max 198@1T or 204@2T
that sucks

hey e30 good to hear u found A64Tweaker helpfull, to b honest i havent had to save its values, so i dont know if it works on my pc, u may have to ask that question of somebody else.

I've been running my 3200+ E3 @
1.5 / 8.5*304 = 2600MHz HT 3x = DDR266 = 199 1T
Idle temp ~25'C Load temp ~44'C
my ram has similiar limitations to ur's..

ahhh....you're not running max cpu multi...

since i'm using CnQ, i have to set max cpu multi to 10.
and NO, i don't want to use third party tool to replace CnQ

i put all the stuff in my first atx-midi tower from 1997
i get 38°C idle and around 50°C under load (arctic freezer 64)

maybe air-flow is not adequate for todays systems, the psu has 2*80mm fans, and i installed 1*92mm on the case backside
i will drill some further holes under the front cover to improve air flow
hope that helps a little...

I have 80mm intake, 120mm rear exuast, plus case has side air venting for vga, and BT. stock PSU 350w
room temp: 20.C
Idle: 25.C
Load: 44.C
Try my settings, see what u think..

I noticed a couple of people mention removing the rubber cover thing over the chipset when replacing the stock fan... I wondered why that was there when I was putting my NB47J on but was afraid to mess with it. Is it worth pulling the NB back off then removing the rubber thing? If so, can you just pull off the cover or is there a trick to it?

Also, anyone know what the Temp3 is in Speedfan? I think it might be the chipset (as opposed to the motherboard, which appears to be Temp2) because it fluctuates widely on load where the Temp2 and Temp1 (CPU) rise and fall much more slowly and predictably.

My shim like rubber thing came off with the stock heatsink, so it isn't a problem for me. I'd advise you guys to keep it in case you need to RMA.

1. You don't need the shim (the rubber square), but as Zoomer advised, it would be a good idea to hang on to it just in case.

2. The A8N does not support chipset temperature monitoring. You will need some sort of external temperature probe to get a NB reading. As far as what Speedfan is reporting, the easiest way to identify the source is by going to the "sensor" tab in Everest:

Link to Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

If it fluctuates wildly in accordance with CPU (but not necesarily GPU) load, my best guess would be CPU temp.

Anyone know if the ASUS A8N-SLI has a 1T bug like the A8N-E? If it doesn't have the 1T bug how is the ASUS A8N-SLI for overclocking?

Is it also true that the ASUS A8N-SLI doesn't work well with ClockGen?

Also what is the difference between all the different versions like Deluxe and Premium? Is it just extra SATA ports and firewire?

Overclocking weirdness: A8N-E, Rev 2, 1013 bios, happily running a X2 3800+. I now have it set at 240 fsb, 10 mult, HT 3X, DDR 266, default voltages across the board. It is stable except frequently the screen blanks then goes into screen saver mode. It does not matter how I set monitor/power saving modes in XP Pro. A flick of the mouse returns it to normal. The vid card is a PNY 6600 running 81.95 WHQL drivers and is not o/c'd. It still does this regardless if PCI Express is set to Auto or locked at 100 in the bios. I'd like to push the HT and DDR higher but not till I can overcome the screen blanking.

If there is anything I can tie it to, it seems to happen most frequently with heavy hard disk activity. I have 3 SATA drives installed, one PATA in a external USB 2.0 enclosure.

Has anyone experienced this type of weirdness with the A8N-E?

Hi everyone, I'm another A8N-E owner... Had a question that I can't seem to get the answer to...

I have an AMD X2 3800+, with 1 GB RAM (Dual Channel, OCZ), 2 250 GB HDDs (one is a WD and the other a Maxtor, both are SATAII, oh and previously the Maxtor had write caching enabled, but I disabled it). I am triple booting between Windows XP Home, Windows Server 2003 and Suse Linux. Now I've been experiencing some weird things lately, such as the computer stalling somewhat when copying files between partitions on the same hard drive or on different hard drives and the computer stalling also when I pop in a CD or DVD into my DVD Writer.

A friend suggested that it might either bad sectors on the drives, lack of free space, fragmentation or the SATA Controller not being installed. I've tried to figure out how to install the SATA Controller, since it's not listed in the Device Manager, but I can't seem to figure it out. When I installed all my current OSes I never required a driver, as my older PC with SATA required, as the SATA drives and partitions were detected by all the OSes' install programs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My fan was giving me all kinds of problems so I called asus for a replacement and it showed up today. I'm really newbie when it comes to messing arount with hardware so I was hoping somebody could tell me how I can go about installing it.

How do I get the old one out? Do I have to take the motherboard and everything else out of my case to do this?

Above are for the DFI boards, but the actual steps are applicable to the A8N. You will have to completely remove the mobo. It helps to have the mobo on some sort of a cushioned surface to facillitate installation of the new cooler, as this will help you push the pins back in.

If you are willing to go through the trouble of disconnecting everything from your system and removing the existing fan, I would strongly suggest you invest in an aftermarket chipset cooling solution. There are more than a few members who have had the new fan die on them after a few months of use.

Note that if you have trouble getting the original pushpins out via compression, and have new push-pins, you can *carefully* cut the the old pushpins using very fine wire cutters or a strong nail clipper.

Hi all. I just upgraded my computer and have run into a strange problem. First I?ll list my system specs:

Asus AN8-E rev. 2 (1013 bios, came with 1010), Athlon 64 x2 4400+, 2 GB OCZ Platinum DDR 400, 80 GB Seagate SATA boot drive, 300 GB Raid 1 (one 300 GB Seagate PATA and one 300 GB Seagate SATA), Seagate 160 GB SATA scratch disk, Antec 500 watt PSU, Asus 7600 GS, Windows XP SP2, drivers that came on the mobo CD, latest AMD CPU driver.

Everything is working fine except the system won?t restart or shut down?Windows shuts down, but the computer doesn?t. I have to press the reset button to get it reboot. All the bios settings are at default except for splash screen disabled, onboard sound disabled, cool n? quiet enabled, and raid enabled.

Any ideas what could be happening? Thanks.

ACPI issue maybe? Maybe a XP repair would help. I'm not sure how much of the hardware you actually upgraded, though.

Well, it looks like I am now a victim of the dreaded 1T bug. I previously had 1 gig of pc3200 performance RAM from OCZ. I had no problem running this RAM at 1t (although it did not like dividers). I just bought a dual channel set of 2x1gig of pc4000 OCZ memory. It is rated at 250mhz. At default settings, I cannot pass Memtest #5 at 1T without thousands of errors. Extra volts do not help. However, at default timings, I can run 250 all the way up to 265mhz at a 2T command rate. I am running the latest bios on my A8N-E with a A64 3500+ Venice.

Too bad for me.

I upgraded everything listed except the two 300 GB drives and the 160 GB drive. Anyway, it turns out it was a software problem. While installing all of my apps, I remember one of them wanted to restart and I clicked ok, but nothing happened. I think that?s when the trouble started. During troubleshooting, I found that the computer would shut down normally if I held down the power button (bypassing Windows). So I did a fresh install, and it?s restarting and shutting down properly. However, now when I install the Nvidia raid drivers, I get an unbootable system (hangs at the Windows screen with the scroll bar). I?ve broken up the array until I can find out what?s up with it.

I have the a8n-e rev 2 board and from reading all the problems in this forum im surprised as i must have the only perfect running board made.my system runs at 2500 with a venive 3200 e3 cpu at 10x250 1 ti 1 with the ram at 1T.the ram i use is corsair xms 3200c2 rev 5.1[mosel chips from what ive read].all voltages are stock cpu 1.34v and ram 2.65v.this system runs flawless.i can go to 2600mhz with a small voltage bump.all still at 1T.
ive modded my chipset cooler with the zalman nb47j.what i did was cut the taller fins off level with the shorter ones and mounted a blower type fan on it.i use a fanmate to control the speed of the blower.its 40x40mm blower.the rpm's range from 4000-8000 rpm and baby does this thing cool.it never goes over 35c.i run the rpm;s at 4800 and on hot days ill step it up to 6000.noise is very minimal at 6000.i had put on the top of the heatsink a 40x40mm led fan off a cooler from newegg or svc called blue ice and it kept temps at around 38c and was completely silent.im telling you this blower with the zalman works fantastic.the volume of air off the blower on to the heatsink is really strong.coolermaster makes a heatsink also that is gold or silver and is the same size as the zalman and you dont have to cut the longer fins off level as this one comes all level.it cools as well as the zalman and mounts the exact same way as the zalman.
I run wd sata h/drives sata 2 for os and sata 1 for data both 80 gig.this has to be the finest running system ive ever built for myself.it is truly flawless in operation.i dont understand this 1t issue with this board alot of people talk about.the ram im using is not expensive ,about 95.00 for 2/512 sticks and bios 1006 is what i use.the system runs at 2500 now and temps are great cpu 30 idle load 38c,mobo 30c and chipset with compunurse is at 33 as i write.i build computers for a living and i have built some 20 systems almost identical to this one and have never had the 1t issue.i almost always use the same ram and different cpu's though.its a nice o/clock and as i like the dfi ultra d this unit smacks the ultra d at the same speed.this is as close to a perfect running system as ive ever built.all my customers who have a simular system love their's also.ive had the exact same results with the a8n sli board ive used for customers who want sli.i almost exclusively use the a8n-e or the a8n sli and i swear ive never had a doa board or a failed board after delivering the computer.some are stock speeds and about 30% are o/clocked to 2500 or 2600mhz.well i could go on and on about this rig but thanks to asus its perfect for me.you all can go out and get your dfi's but ill stick with what i have till k8L.
though i do like the dfi ultra d.and would like to build another one with the latest rev as the one i built a year ago was one buggy board with ram and boy did it run hot.sold it and bought this board.just my experience with this board and im wondering if the 1T issue has something to do with ram and memory controller as i use this corsair ram exclusively and never had the 1t issue with some 20+ boards....just a thought.

I tried my 3000+ and Patriot XBLK 2x512MB kit and got the 1T bug but this combo worked fine on a MSI K8N Neo2 Plat. I now have the same CPU and 2GB Corsair XMS PC4000 and still get the 1T bug so it can't be a memory controller or memory problem.

I am thinking about getting SLi and want a cheap board as most boards with two 16x SLi lanes are too expensive and two 16x has no increase in performance over two 8X SLi boards which are much cheaper. I am thinking about the A8N-SLi or A8N-SLi Deluxe and wondered if these boards have a 1T bug. I heard the A8N-SLi does but the Deluxe model doesn't.

Over at the OCZ support forum, the staff there said that all of the SLI versions have the 1T bug EXCEPT the Premium SLI board. Here is a reference post:

My A8N-E seems not to suffer from the 1T bug ... I've had my FSB well above 245 with 1T settings on my Kingston Value-RAM 1GB dimms & its been rock-solid. I only got this board about a month ago so I suppose its possible the issue has been corrected, or maybe I just got lucky.
I also had a shutdown issue where XP would begin to shutdown & then hang with a blank desktop & mouse curser only that started when I upgraded from ATI's Cat v6.3 to v6.4 ... I found a registry hack that corrected the issue completely & I'd post it now but I'm at a friends house & I don't remember where I found it.

It's almost like this bug is dependant upon each invididual combination of RAM and CPU. Becuase like I said, I could run 1T or 2T with the same results with my old OCZ performance ram. But with my new 2gigs of Platinum ram, I cannot run 2T at the rated speed. But then again, maybe that was because I was nowhere near 235mhz with my old performance RAM. So I don't know.
